Easter Day

The Resurrection of our Lord

April 21, 2019

Remember Jesus Risen

AS WE GATHER

Christ is risen!  Today we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord.  That event is a fact of history, but it means new life is given to us all.  Through Isaiah, God had promised a new heaven and a new earth.  For us that means a new life in which our sins have been forgiven as we trust that Jesus paid for them all with His death and resurrection.  The report of the women on Easter was met with skepticism by the disciples.  But Christ did rise; and, Paul points out in the Epistle, He’s the first fruits of those who sleep.  Today’s celebrating isn’t for a day—it lasts forever!

People:        according to the Scriptures.

OPENING UP TO GOD

Pastor:  On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished,” and on Easter in heaven acknowledged the sacrifice complete by raising our Savior from death.  Forgiveness is available to all who call out to God in Jesus’ name.  Let us therefore confess our sins.

~~~~~~ Silence for reflection ~~~~~~
Pastor:          Heavenly Father,
People: we confess that we have not walked in newness of life.  We have failed to love You with all that we are and have, and we have not always remembered the new life You gave to us in Baptism.
Pastor:  Christ has paid for all our sins.  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People:       Amen.
CHOIR ANTHEM                                                   Resurrection Victory
By: Lloyd Larson
He is risen! Christ is risen! Sing it out with joyful voice!
He has burst the three days’ prison, let the whole wide earth rejoice!
Death is conquered, we are free, Christ has won the victory.
He is risen! Christ is risen! He shall reign for all eternity!
He is risen! Christ is risen! Risen to a holy state!
We are free from sin’s dark prison; He has opened heaven’s gate.
Death is conquered, we are free, Christ has won the victory.
He is risen!  Christ is risen!  He shall reign for all eternity!
Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save;
His glories now we sing of Him who died and rose on high,
He died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die!
He is risen! Christ is Risen! Sing it out with joyful voice!
He has burst the three days’ prison, let the whole wide earth rejoice!
Death is conquered, we are free, Christ has won the victory.
He is risen! Christ is risen! Christ is risen!
Christ is risen, alleluia!
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Pastor:          Mighty Lord, on the cross Your Son finished the sacrifice to pay for all our sins.  We remember Your promises; we give thanks for His sacrifice; we pray that Your Holy Spirit will enliven us to live as Your forgiven children here in time and forever in eternity.  We pray these things through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People:        Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT READING                                      Isaiah 65:17-25
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain or bear children for calamity, for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the LORD, and their descendants with them. Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent’s food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain,” says the LORD.
EPISTLE                                                                I Corinthians 15:19-26
  If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
HOLY GOSPEL                                                                    Luke 24:1-12
Pastor:           The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter.
People:        Glory to You, O Lord.
Pastor:           On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.  And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.  While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.  And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them,
Reader 1:     Why do you seek the living among the dead?  He is not          here but has risen.
Reader 2:     Remember how He told you,
Reader 1:     remember while He was still in Galilee,
Both Readers:            remember that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.
Pastor:           And they remembered, they remembered His words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.  Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.  But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.
Pastor:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.
CREED
People:   I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
        I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.  He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.  He descended into hell.  On the third day he rose again.  He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
        I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.
CHOIR & YOUTH SONG: “Crown Him, the Risen King!” By Lloyd Larson
All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing:
“Christ is risen! Christ is risen!” O praise him, O praise him,  alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Rejoice, the Lord is King! Your Lord and King adore! Rejoice, give thanks, and sing,
and triumph evermore. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice
His kingdom cannot fail; He rules o’er earth and heav’n; the keys of death and hell
are to our Jesus giv’n. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice!
With congregation: Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne.
Hark! How the heav’nly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing of  Him who died for thee,
And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity.
Crown Him the Lord of life, who triumphed o’er the grave,
And rose victorious in the strife for those He came to save;
His glories now we sing Who died and rose on High,
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.
All creatures of our God and King, Christ is risen! Christ is risen!
Alleluia, alleluia!  Alleluia!
SERMON        Pastor Jeremy Lucke
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My † blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.  This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
“Because He Lives”             TOSB 11
God sent His son, they called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal, and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon;
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives
Because He lives I can face tomorrow;
Because He lives all fear is gone,
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.
How sweet to hold a new born baby
And feel the pride and joy He gives;
But greater still the calm assurance
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.
Because He lives I can face tomorrow;
Because He lives all fear is gone,
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.
And then one day I’ll cross the river;
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain.
And then as death gives way to victory,
I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives.
Because He lives I can face tomorrow;
Because He lives all fear is gone,
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.
“He Lives”              TOSB 61
I serve a risen Savior he’s in the world today;
I know that he is living, whatever
Men may say; I see his hand of mercy,
I hear his voice of cheer, and just the
Time I need him he’s always near.
He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s
Narrow way. He lives, he lives salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart.
In all the world around me I see the loving care,
And though my heart grows weary I never
Will despair; I know that he is leading,
Through all the stormy blast, the day of
His appearing will come at last.
He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s
Narrow way. He lives, he lives salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart.
Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and
Sing eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek him,
The help of all who find, none other
Is so loving, so good and kind.
He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s
Narrow way. He lives, he lives salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart.
