TENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

August 1, 2021

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER… Bread, in one form or another, is a diet staple in most every culture. Though today we can be overwhelmed at the grocery store with countless types and styles, even in its simplest form, bread continues to sustain stomachs in a variety of ways. Bread, or the simplest form of manna, is what the Lord would use to sustain His people in the wilderness, and the image of bread is what He would use to help people understand the greater gift He came to give in His own Son. Yet, more than sustaining a diet for this body and life, Jesus, the bread of life, has come to serve us salvation, sustain our souls, and feed us with His forgiveness.

Welcome & Announcements

STARTING WITH PRAISE      Psalm 145:1-3

Pastor:  I will extol you, my God and King,

People:  and bless your name forever and ever.

Pastor:  Every day I will bless you

People:  and praise your name forever and ever.

Pastor:  Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,

People:  and his greatness is unsearchable.

OPENING SONG:      “Shout to the Lord”

Shout to the Lord all the earth, let us sing

Power and majesty, praise to the King;

Mountains bow down and the seas will roar

At the sound of Your name.

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands,

Forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand;

Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.

My Jesus, my Savior, Lord, there is none like You,

All of my days I want to praise the wonders of Your mighty love.

My Comfort, my Shelter, Tower of refuge and strength;

Let ev’ry breath, all that I am

Never cease to worship You.

Shout to the Lord all the earth, let us sing

Power and majesty, praise to the King;

Mountains bow down and the seas will roar

At the sound of Your name.

I sing for joy at the work of Your hands,

Forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand;

Nothing compares to the promise I have in You.

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

Pastor:  Jesus invites you: “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.

People:  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Pastor:   Let us come to Jesus in a time of silent prayer.  We reflect upon our need for Jesus’ rest and forgiveness.

Pastor:  Almighty God, heavenly Father,

People: We confess that we are burdened by our sin.  What we want to do, we don’t do.  What we end up doing, we know that we are not supposed to do.  We feel trapped.  Your Word teaches us that we cannot escape our sinfulness.  Only in Your mercy is there rest for our souls and relief from the burdens of our hearts.  Father fill us again with the assurance of the cross and empty tomb so that we may receive again the victory that is our through Jesus.  Amen.

Pastor:  The burdens that are so heavy for you are light for Jesus!  As you have now confessed your sins, it is my privilege and joy to announce to you that Jesus has taken away your burdens by His death and resurrection.  According to His own command, I, as a servant of Jesus, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People:  Amen.

SONG:                  “O, How I Love Jesus”

There is a name I love to hear…..I love to sing its worth;

It sounds like music in my ear, the sweetest name on earth.

O, how I love Jesus, O, how I love Jesus,

O, how I love Jesus–Because He first loved me!

It tells me of a Savior’s love, Who died to set me free;

It tells me of His precious blood, The sinner’s perfect plea.

O, how I love Jesus, O, how I love Jesus,

O, how I love Jesus—Because He first loved me!

It tells of One whose loving heart Can feel my deepest woe,

Who in each sorrow bears a part That none can bear below.

O, how I love Jesus, O, how I love Jesus,

O, how I love Jesus–Because He first loved me!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor:  Let us Pray. Blessed Lord, since You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning, grant that we may so          hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them that we       may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope found in them; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People:      Amen.

Scripture Lessons

Epistle Lesson:                                                    Ephesians 4:1-16

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
    and he gave gifts to men.”

(In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Gospel:                                                                         John 6:22-35

Referring to the manna in the wilderness, Jesus calls Himself the bread of life.

 22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to You, O Christ!

SERMON HYMN:    “They’ll Know We Are Christians”

Words: 1966 F.E.L. Publications. Assigned 1991 The Lorenz Corporation – Music: 1966 F.E.L. Publications. Assigned 1991 The Lorenz Corporation

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,

And we pray that all unity may one day be restored:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,

Yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand,

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand,

And together we’ll spread the news that God is in our land:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,

Yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

All praise to the Father, from whom all things come,

And all praise to Christ Jesus, his on-ly Son,

And all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,

Yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

WE SHARE OUR FAITH

People:  I believe in God, who has created all things and continues to create new life within us.

             I believe in Jesus, son of God, son of man, the Savior of the world.  By His life, His death and resurrection, I can know  the true depth of human possibility, and experience the true joy of an abundant life.

            I believe that the Holy Spirit is present, now and always, calling us to faith, giving us gifts and empowering us for service.  I believe that the community of believers called the church can experience the fullness of life through the word, the sacraments, and all that we do.  Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Pastor:   Let us pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ and for everyone in need.

Pastor:   Paul writes that Christ gave to the Church “the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists.”

People: Strengthen them, heavenly Father, to go where they are sent, to teach the truth in love, and to call all people to the Gospel of Your Son.

Pastor:   Christ also gave “the shepherds and teachers.”

People: Guide all pastors and lay leaders, Lord Jesus, to nurture Your people, young and old, strong and weak, in faith and love.

Pastor:  Christ gave these gifts so that we may each function as part of the Body of Christ as it builds itself up in love.

People:   Help us, O Holy Spirit, to use all our gifts to build one another up in love here and, through our mission efforts, around the world.

Pastor: God rescued His people from slavery in Egypt, destroying the forces of the nation of Egypt and providing for the Israelites, who were wandering in the desert.

People: Raise up leaders in the governments of the nations, Lord, that freedom and justice abound within their borders and peace break out between neighboring peoples.

Pastor:   Our Lord Jesus offered much more than physical food—He gave Himself, the bread of life, to the disciples and all His followers in their need.

People: Hear the prayers of all who call out to You, O Lord, in their distress from ills of body or soul, problems of house or home, employment and finances, dignity and food, and especially those near and dear to us, whom we name in our hearts before You.

Pastor:     These and any other things You would have us ask of You, heavenly Father, grant to us for the sake of Your son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

People: Amen.

PREFACE

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

CLOSING HYMN: “Do Lord”                                         TOSB 41

Copyright  © 1976 John Ylvisaker.

Do, Lord, O do Lord, O do remember!

Do, Lord, O do, Lord, O do remember me!

Do, Lord, O do, Lord, O do remember me!

Look away beyond the blue.

You’re my light and my salvation, I won’t be afraid!

You’re the stronghold of my life, by You all things were made.

Foes attack me, hassle me, but I will never fade,

For I move in the strength of the Lord.

Do, Lord, O do Lord, O do remember!

Do, Lord, O do, Lord, O do remember me!

Do, Lord, O do, Lord, O do remember me!

Look away beyond the blue.

Though a host encamp against me, I will never fear!

Even though a war surrounds me, You are always near.

One thing I have asked of You that I will seek for sure

Is to live in the house of the Lord.

Do, Lord, O do Lord, O do remember!

Do, Lord, O do, Lord, O do remember me!

Do, Lord, O do, Lord, O do remember me!

Look away beyond the blue.

You will hide me in Your shelter in the day of strife;

You’ll conceal me in Your tent or set me on the height.

Now my head is lifted up above the storms of night,

We can live in the light of the Lord.

Do, Lord, O do Lord, O do remember!

Do, Lord, O do, Lord, O do remember me!

Do, Lord, O do, Lord, O do remember me!

Look away beyond the blue.
