EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

August 4, 2019

AS WE GATHER… Our world enjoys labeling people. Whether by skin color, gender, economic status, ethnic background, political affiliation, age, or whatever else it may be, labels are popular. This sort of labeling divides people into categories and causes much strife and argument. There was labeling going on in Colossae as well: Greek, Jew, circumcised, uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free. But in Colossians, Paul gives us a label that leads not to divisive evil but to amazing generosity and love. Paul writes, “You have been raised with Christ.” This label unifies us! Today we celebrate it.

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

INVOCATION

L: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

L: Having been raised with Christ, let us confess our sin to God and to one another, trusting that Christ, who is all in all, forgives all sins.

~~~~~~~~~~~Silence~~~~~~~~~~~~
L: We have sinned against You, O God, in thought, word, and deed.
C: Forgive us and renew us, O Lord.
L: We have not loved You with our whole heart.
C: Forgive us and renew us, O Lord.
L: We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
C: Forgive us and renew us, O Lord.
L: We have spent our time in vain pursuits.
C: Forgive us and renew us, O Lord.
L: We have struggled to put off the old self with its practices.
C: Forgive us and renew us, O Lord.
L: You have been raised with Christ. You have been given a new self, which is being renewed after the image of God. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE: “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” LBW 499
Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
While the hope of endless glory fills my heart with joy and love,
Teach me ever to adore Thee, may I still thy goodness prove.
Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be;
Let that grace now like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heartk, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
L: Let us Pray…God of true wisdom, fill our minds with knowledge of who You are and what You have done for us through Jesus, so that our lives exude thanksgiving to You and overflow with generosity to our neighbors. We pray these things through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
EPISTLE:             Colossians 3:1-11
        You have been raised with Christ.
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.
Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE
RITE OF INDUCTION FOR VICAR CHRISTIAN DOLLAR
P:  Grace and peace be yours from God our Father and Lord Jesus. According to the custom received among us, Christian Dollar, is about to begin his service to you and to our Lord as vicar. That everything undertaken in his task might be to the glory of God and serve as a blessing to this congregation, let us hear what the Apostle Peter writes in the fourth chapter of First Epistle:
As each one has received a gift, minister to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus, to whom belong the glory and dominion forever and ever.
All:  Amen.
P:  Christian, are you prepared to serve as vicar in this congregation, undertaking your assignments as one who seeks training for the pastoral ministry and who serves under the blessing of God? If so, answer: I am, with the help of God.
V: I am, with the help of God.
P:  Almighty God our Father, through Your dear Son, You commanded us to pray that You send laborers into Your harvest. Bless, we pray You, and send Your Holy Spirit upon Christian, that through his services as vicar in this congregation, Your Word may be proclaimed and taught in joyfulness and Your Church built upon the one foundation which You Yourself have laid, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
All:  Amen.
P:  Armed with the Word of God, our heavenly Father, and having confident trust in His gracious promised, enter upon your duties as vicar in this congregation, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
P:  The Lord our God, who will bless both your learning and your service, grant you the constant companionship of His Spirit that in all things you might glorify Him.
All:  Amen.
GOSPEL:         Luke 12:13-21
        Be on guard against covetousness.
    Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”  But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?”
   And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C:  Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN: “The Solid Rock”                                       TOSB 222
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness seem to hide His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
SERMON
APOSTLES’ CREED
ALL:   I believe in God, the Father almighty,
                        Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
                        He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
                                And was born of the virgin Mary.
                        He suffered under Pontius Pilate.
                                Was crucified, died, and was buried.
                        He descended into hell.
                        On the third day he rose again.
                        He ascended into heaven,
                                And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
                        He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
                        The holy Christian Church,
                        The communion of saints,
                        The forgiveness of sins,
                        The resurrection of the body,
                        And the life everlasting.  Amen.
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling—Calling, “O sinner, come home!”
O for the wonderful love He has promised, Promised for you and for me;
“Let Us Break Bread Together”                                             TOSB 126
Let us break bread together on our knees;
Let us break bread together on our knees;
When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord have mercy on me.
Let us drink wine together on our knees;
Let us drink wine together on our knees;
When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord have mercy on me.
Let us bow ‘round the altar on our knees;
Let us bow ‘round the altar on our knees;
When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord have mercy on me.
Let us praise God together on our knees;
Let us praise God together on our knees;
When I fall on my knees, with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord have mercy on me.
“To God Be the Glory”                                                            TOSB 241
To God be the glory, great things He has done;
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He has done.
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To every believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He has done.
Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory, great things He has done.
