Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

AS WE GATHER…. Today’s Epistle is from Hebrews 11, the “by faith” chapter. It lists heroes of faith, people who trusted in God’s promise, assured of what they hoped for. The Reading from Genesis singles out Abram believing God, for which God counted it to him as righteousness. Now we can look back, knowing that in one descendent of Abraham, Jesus, all God’s promises were kept. His calming words in the Gospel give us the assurance we need to rely on God’s care and concern when we don’t have all we think we need.

RINGING OF THE BELL…. After the ringing of the bell we take a few moments in silence to prepare our hearts and minds for worship.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Pastor:  In the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

 ~~~~~ Silence for reflection ~~~~~
Pastor: Most merciful God,
People: we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
Pastor:  Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgive us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
People:  Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
OLD TESTAMENT            Genesis 15:1-6
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.”
And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”
And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
HOLY GOSPEL                  Luke 12:22-34
And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on.
23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!
25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?
27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
28 But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!
29 And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried.
30 For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them.
31 Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.
32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
33 Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.
34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You O Christ.
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE
SERMON HYMN      “The God of Abraham Praise”
The God of Abr’ham praise,
Who reigns enthroned above;
Ancient of everlasting
days And God of love.
Jehovah, great I AM!
By earth and heav’n confessed;
I bow and bless the
sacred name Forever blest.
The God of Abr’ham praise,
At whose supreme command
From earth I rise and seek
the joys At His right hand.
I all on earth forsake,
Its wisdom, fame, and pow’r,
And Him my only portion make,
My shield and tow’r.
The God of Abr’ham praise,
Whose all sufficient grace
Shall guide me all my
pilgrim days In all my ways.
He deigns to call me friend;
He calls Himself my God.
And He shall save me to the end
Through Jesus’ blood.
He by Himself has sworn;
I on His oath depend.
I shall, on eagle wings up-borne,
To heav’n ascend.
I shall behold His face;
I shall His pow’r adore
And sing the wonders of
His grace Forever-more.
A SENDING CREED (based on the Apostles’ Creed)
People: God, the sending Father, the Almighty creator of the cosmos,
          Sent His only Son Jesus Christ, to be conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He was sent to proclaim freedom. He then suffered at the hands of many, including Pontius Pilate. He was crucified, died, and buried. Within three days, He descended into hell to proclaim victory and rose to life granting God’s righteousness by grace through faith. Forty days later, He ascended to heaven. He gives life to all who believe in Him.
          After the ascension, the Father and Son sent the Holy Spirit to boldly make and call all followers of Christ to His holy apostolic church. He calls us, a community of believers, who are sent to all people with power and strength, courage and gifts to proclaim the Good News. As the apostles were sent, people believed. As those people believed, they, too were sent. As they were sent, now we believe. And as we believe, we are sent. Amen.
OFFERING
We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us – ourselves, our time, our possessions.
OFFERTORY
PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH
Pastor:  Let us pray for ourselves, the Church around the world, and all people according to their various needs. God said, “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield.” Let us pray for everyone who faces this day in fear.
       We join our prayers with everyone imprisoned unjustly, terrorized in lawless areas on earth, or trapped in painful illnesses. Gracious God, strengthen the faith they have or open their hearts to receive Jesus; give them courage to act where it is wise and to know Your peace and protection amid unchanging circumstances. Lord, hear our prayer.
People:  Lord, our hope is in You.
Pastor:  Jesus said, “Do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on.” Let us pray for all people who do not have adequate food, clothing, or shelter.
       Guide governments, expand relief agencies, and inspire caring individuals of our communities, nation, and world so they may be Your instruments, O God, to provide what their citizens and neighbors need for life. Through their actions, provide relief and calm the anxiety of the poor, dispossessed, and lonely; grant that they give You the glory. We especially pray for…. Meet their needs as fits Your gracious plans for them. Lord, hear our prayer.
People:  Lord, our hope is in You.
Pastor:  Jesus asserted, “It is Your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” Let us pray for the Church here and around the world.
       Grant us growth in faith and numbers, Lord Jesus, as we gather to hear Your Word and to love the people around us. Wherever the Church is found on earth, raise up leaders to proclaim the Gospel and faithful people to exhibit their faith in Your promises and the inheritance You have promised. Lord, hear our prayer.
People:  Lord, our hope is in You.
Pastor: Lord God, our shepherd, You gather the lambs of Your flock into the arms of Your mercy and bring them home. Comfort the Scheele family as they mourn the loss of Harold–a husband, father, grandfather. Comfort all of us with the certain hope of the resurrection to everlasting life and joyful reunion with those we love who have died in the faith. Lord, hear our prayer.
People: Lord, our hope is in You.
Pastor:  These and any other things You would have us ask of You, heavenly Father, grant to us for the sake of Your Son, Jesus, our Lord, in whose name we pray.
People: Amen.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
Pastor: The Lord Be with you.
People: And also with you.
Pastor: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
PROPER PREFACE
SANCTUS
Pastor: It is indeed right and salutary …. We praise your name and join their unending hymn:
People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow’r and might: Heav’n and earth are full of your glory.
     Hosanna in the highest, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
     Hosanna in the highest.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen
COMMUNION HYMN            “Lamb of God”
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.  Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace.
COMMUNE TOGETHER
DISTRIBUTION HYMN   “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less”
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
No merit of my own I claim,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
Chorus:                On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils his lovely face,
I rest on his unchanging grace;
In ev’ry high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.
Chorus
His oath, his covenant, his blood
Sustain me in the raging flood;
When all supports are washed away,
He then is all my hope and stay.
Chorus
When he shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in him be found,
Clothed in his righteousness alone,
Redeemed to stand before the throne!
Chorus
POST COMMUNION CANTICLE
People: Thank the Lord and sing his praise; tell ev’ry-one what he has done.  Let ev’ry-one who seeks the Lord rejoice and proudly bear his name.  He recalls his promises and leads his people forth in joy with sounds of thanksgiving.
     Alleluia. Alleluia.
PRAYER
Pastor: We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing power of this gift of life; and we pray that in your mercy you would strengthen us, through this gift, in faith towards you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.
BENEDICTION
Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you.
     The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
     The Lord look upon you with favor and …+ give you peace.
People: Amen.
CLOSING HYMN:  “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee”
Joyful, joyful we adore thee,
God of glory, Lord of love!
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before thee,
Praising thee, their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
Drive the gloom of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day.
All thy works with joy surround thee,
Earth and heav’n reflect thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around thee,
Center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird, and flowing fountain
Call us to rejoice in thee.
Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Wellspring of the joy of living,
Ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our brother,
 All who live in love are thine;
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the joy divine!
Dismissal
Pastor: Go in peace. Serve the Lord
