 PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER…………………Today, one week after Christmas, we recognize Jesus’ circumcision and naming.  But approximately nine months earlier, Mary already knew how this child was to be named.  Even before Jesus was conceived, the angel Gabriel came to Mary and announced, “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus” (Luke 1:31).  Mary didn’t need to consult any books of baby names to decide what her child should be called.  No, God had already decided that this child would be named Jesus, which means “Savior” or the “the Lord saves.”  You see, Jesus’ name is more than just who He is, but it is also what He does.  Jesus’ name defined His perfect life, sacrificial death, and life-giving resurrection.  In Jesus, the Lord truly does save!

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

 CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

P:  Before we join in our Christmas celebration, we clear the way by confessing our sins and hearing once again God’s gracious words of forgiveness……

C:  We admit that we are sinners, Lord…….we sin in our thoughts, words and actions, by things we have done and left undone.  We especially recognize our fear of the future………..wanting to know and control our future……….rather than trusting you for what is to come.  Forgive us when we forget your promises for our future…………….and make clear to the eyes of our hearts that our future is in your loving hands.

 SONG OF CONFESSION  (twice through)                               “White As Snow”

                White as snow, white as snow,

Though my sins were as scarlet

Lord, I know, Lord I know

That I’m clean and forgiven,

Through the power of your blood,

Through the wonder of your love,

Through faith in you, I know that I can be

White as snow.

P:  God knows our fears, our failures to trust him for the future, and in Christ assures us of his forgiveness.  I therefore in Christ’s stead announce the free and full forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen!

 CHORAL PRAISE SONG                        Glory to God in the Highest Heaven                        By Pepper Choplin

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  O God, our Maker and Redeemer, You wonderfully created us and in the incarnation of Your Son yet more wondrously restored our human nature.  Grant that we may ever be alive in Him who made Himself to be like us; through Jesus, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen!

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

Old Testament Lesson:  Numbers 6:22-27                                                                             The Benediction

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel:  you shall say to them,

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

“So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.”

 Epistle Lesson:  Galatians 3:23-29                                                                                              Baptized into Christ

Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.  So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, nears according to promise.

 CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

  Holy Gospel:  Luke 2:21                                                                                                 Jesus’ Circumcision and Naming

And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

SERMON HYMN                                                                “Joy to the World”

                Joy to the world!  The Lord is come, Let earth receive her king.

Let ev’ry heart prepare him room,

And heav’n and nature sing, and heav’n and nature sing, and Heav’n, and heav’n and nature sing.

Joy to the world!  The Savior reigns; Let all their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,

Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

He rules the world with truth and grace,

And makes the nations prove,

The glories of his righteousness, and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love,

CONFESSING OUR FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

          Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

          He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

          And born of the virgin Mary.

          He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

                          Was crucified, died, and was buried.

          He descended to the dead.

          On the third day he rose again,

          He ascended into heaven,

                          And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

          He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

          The holy catholic church,

          The communion of saints,

          The forgiveness of sins,

          The resurrection of the body

          And the life everlasting.  Amen.

 DISTRIBUTION HYMNS

“Red Book” 114                                                                             Jesus Loves Me

Jesus loves me—this I know, For the Bible tells me so;

Little ones to Him belong—They are weak, but He is strong.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me—loves me still, Though I’m very weak and ill;

That I might from sin be free, Bled and died upon the tree.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me—He who died, Heaven’s gate to open wide;

He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me—He will stay Close beside me all the way,

Though hast bled and died for me, I will henceforth live for the.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.

“Red Book” 47                                                                                Freely, Freely

God forgave my sin in Jesus’ name,

I’ve been born again in Jesus’ name;

And in Jesus’ name I come to you

To share His love as He told me to.

He said, “Freely, freely you have received:

Freely, freely give.

Go in my name, and because you believe,

Others will know that I live.”

All pow’r is giv’n in Jesus’ name,

In earth and heav’n in Jesus’ name

And in Jesus’ name I come to you

To share His pow’r as He told me to.

He said, “Freely, freely you have received:

Freely, freely give.

Go in my name, and because you believe,

Others will know that I live.”

“Red Book” 11                                                                          Because He Lives

God sent His son, they called Him Jesus

He came to love, heal, and forgive.

He lived and died to buy my pardon;

An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives

Because He lives I can face tomorrow;

Because He lives all fear is gone,

Because I know He holds the future,

And life is worth the living just because He lives.

How sweet to hold a new born baby

And feel the pride and joy He gives;

But greater still the calm assurance

This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

Because He lives I can face tomorrow;

Because He lives all fear is gone,

Because I know He holds the future,

And life is worth the living just because He lives.

And then one day I’ll cross the river;

I’ll fight life’s final war with pain.

And then as death gives way to victory,

I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives.

Because He lives I can face tomorrow;

Because He lives all fear is gone,

Because I know He holds the future,

And life is worth the living just because He lives.
