FATHER’S DAY – June 18, 2017

 PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

 AS WE GATHER…People all over our country today will be celebrating Father’s Day as we give thanks for our earthly dads, grandfathers, and other men who are special to us.  Every time we gather in the Lord’s house for worship, our time together can also be seen as a Father’s Day.  As we are reminded in our readings, God, our heavenly Father, has reconciled us to Himself through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus.  By our Father’s grace, we are made His “treasured possession.”  We approach Him directly and confidently as children do their loving Father.  May your time in our Father’s house be blessed this day—for this day is His day!

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

P:        We remember our Baptism, when the Lord claimed us and adopted us as His own children. In the name              of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:        Amen.

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

P:        God shows His love for us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

C:        Since, therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God.

P:        Let us join together and confess our sins to God our Father:

C:        Heavenly Father, even though You have called us to be Your treasured possession, we have not always obeyed Your voice, nor have we abided by our covenant with You.  In our thoughts, words, and deeds, we have not behaved like the holy nation You created us to be.  Through Your unfailing love and tender mercy, remove our transgressions from us. Speak over us words of life that flow from the cross of Your Son, Jesus Christ.  Father, forgive us and restore us as Your children.  Amen.

P:        All that the Lord has spoken, His Son has done.  Jesus’ obedient life was               lived for you so that, by His death and resurrection, you are now reconciled to the Father.  Upon this your confession, I, as a called and      ordained ervant of the Lord, announce His grace to all of you and, in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus, forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:        Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE                            “Lord I Lift Your Name on High”

Lord, I lift Your name on high,

Lord, I love to sing Your praises.

I’m so glad You’re in my life,

I’m so glad You came to save us.

You came from heaven to earth to show the way,

From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay;

From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky;

Lord, I lift Your Name on high.

Lord, I lift Your name on high,

Lord, I love to sing Your praises.

I’m so glad You’re in my life,

I’m so glad You came to save us.

You came from heaven to earth to show the way,

From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay;

From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky;

Lord, I lift Your Name on high.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:        Let us Pray…Father in heaven, You have brought us to Yourself and made us Your treasured possession                 through the saving work of our Savior.  By the power of Your eternal Spirit, may we extend Your saving Word into all the world.  We pray these things through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:        Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

Old Testament Lesson:              Exodus 19:2-8             The Lord calls His people His “treasured possession.”

(The people of Israel) set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.

Epistle Lesson:                              Romans 5:6-15         God shows His love for us through the death of His Son.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE                               Pastor Jeremy

Gospel Lesson:                              Matthew 9:35-10:8  Jesus sends out His disciples to proclaim His kingdom.

And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot,and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.

SERMON HYMN – TOSB (red) 55           “Great is Thy Faithfulness”

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not,

As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!”

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness mercy and love.

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!”

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!”

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

SERMON                                     “The Building Blocks of Trust”

CREED

P:        I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.  What does this mean?

C:        I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes,  ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them.

He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have.  He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life.

            He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil.  All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me.  For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him.

C:        to save us from our sin and to make us Your children and heirs of all Your blessings through faith in Him.

P:        We pray for our families:  for the fathers You have given on this earth,

C:        that they faithfully lead their children in the way of Christ and                 peace;

P:        for mothers,

C:        that they have strength and grace to manage their many responsibilities and to give them joy and fulfillment in their      work;

P:        and for children,

C:        that they grow in the faith in which You have called them, live long, and develop in all ways pleasing to You.

P:        Heavenly Father, for Your children, our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who suffer pains, losses, and illnesses, (especially…), graciously grant Your healing.  Keep their faith firm in times of need and give comfort by Your present and eternal promises.  Lord, in Your mercy,

P:        In this family of believers whom You have called, gathered, and                enlightened through Your Spirit, grant   that You would open the hearts and minds of Your people to the truth of Your Word.  For those who have yet to know of the joy of being heirs of Your kingdom, connect us with them and work through us to proclaim Your love, mercy and grace.  Hear these prayers and all others we lift to You, almighty Father, in the name of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

DISTRIBUTION SONGS

“Precious Lord, Take My Hand”

.               Precious Lord, take my hand,

Lead me on, Help me stand –

I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;

Thro’ the storm, thro’ the night,

Lead me on to the light –

Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

When my way grows drear,

Precious Lord, linger near –

When my life is almost gone;

Hear my cry, hear my call,

Hold my hand lest I fall –

Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home

TOSB (red) 23     “Children of the Heavenly Father”

Children of the heav’nly Father

Safely in his bosom gather,

Nestling bird or star in heaven

Such a refuge ne’er was given.

God his own doth tend and nourish,

In his holy courts they flourish,

From all evil things he spares them,

In his mighty arms he bears them.

Neither life nor death shall ever

From the Lord his children sever;

From all evil things he spares them,

In his mighty arms he bears them.

Though he giveth or he taketh,

God his children ne’er forsaketh;

His the loving purpose solely

To preserve them pure and holy.

TOSB (red) 14     “Bind Us Together”

Bind us together Lord, Bind us together with cords that cannot be broken,

Bind us together Lord, Bind us together

Bind us together with love.

There is only one God.

There is only one King.

There is only one body.

That is why I sing.

Bind us together Lord, Bind us together with cords that cannot be broken,

Bind us together Lord, Bind us together

Bind us together with love.
