PENTECOST

June 4, 2017

 PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

 AS WE GATHER…………..Sometimes it seems like it takes a long time for prayer to be answered.  One might say it took a long time—hundreds of years—for Moses’ prayer to be answered.  In today’s Old Testament Reading, Moses cries out, “Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put His Spirit on them!”  Moses’ perhaps unintended prophecy is fulfilled at the Day of Pentecost, when the Lord pours out the Holy Spirit so that all nations could hear His mighty works proclaimed.  But the Lord also pours out His Spirit on you today!  In today’s service we are given the Holy Spirit in the forgiveness of our sins and the precious gift of God’s grace in the body and blood of Jesus!  The Holy Spirit remains with us as we practice good works in our neighborhood and community.

RINGING OF THE BELL………….After the ringing of the bell we take a few moments in silence to prepare our hearts and minds for worship.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

P:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

WE OPEN OURSELVES TO GOD

P:  Lord, we need Your mercy.  In this hour, help us to see our sin and pain and pray for a fresh start.  Help us to see the shortcomings in our lives and look to You for the answers to our problems.  Give us a new vision of what life can be like.  Teach us to hope, to love, to give and to have faith.  Lord, we need Your mercy.

Silence for Reflection

FORGIVENESS IS OURS

C: Our God has heard the cries and felt our pain and has had mercy on us.  God has seen our need and provided for our salvation; seen our condition and provided the solution; seen our heart and given us a Savior.  Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our sin is no longer the weight that holds us down.  We are free to live in victory, free from the sin of our self-deceit and free from Satan’s power.  Praise God for His goodness.

PRAISE SONG:  Red Book 74 (vs. 1-4 only)                                   “Holy, Holy”

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  Let us Pray.  God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, as you sent upon the disciples the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, look upon your Church and open our hearts to the power of the Spirit.  Kindle in us the fire of your love and strengthen our lives for service in your kingdom.  We pray this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

Old Testament:  Numbers 11:24-30      Moses desires the Lord to put His Spirit on His people.

So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.

Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.”But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

Epistle:  Acts 2:1-21                     The Day of Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

CHOIR ANTHEM                 “Spirit, Come Down”                           By Mark Hayes

GOSPEL:  John 7:37-39                  Out of believers in Christ will flow rivers of living water.

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

SERMON HYMN  Green Book 390                            I Love to Tell the Story”

I love to tell the story of unseen things above,

Of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.

I love to tell the story, because I know it’s true;

It satisfies my longings as nothing else would do

I love to tell the story; I’ll sing this theme in glory

And tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

I love to tell the story; how pleasant to repeat

What seems, each time I tell it, more wonderfully sweet!

I love to tell the story, for some have never heard

The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word.

I love to tell the story; I’ll sing this theme in glory

And tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

I love to tell the story, for those who know it best

Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.

And when, in scenes of glory, I sing the new, new song,

I’ll sing the old, old story that I have loved so long.

I love to tell the story; I’ll sing this theme in glory

And tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

 APOSTLE’S CREED

C:  I believe in God, the Father almighty,

      Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

      He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

          And was born of the virgin Mary.

      He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

          Was crucified, died, and was buried.

      He descended into hell.

      On the third day he rose again.

      He ascended into heaven,

          And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

      He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

      The holy Christian Church,

      The communion of saints,

      The forgiveness of sins,

      The resurrection of the body,

      And the life everlasting.  Amen.

OFFERTORY

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P:  Lord God, heavenly Father, when You filled the disciples with the Holy Spirit, 3,000 souls were called, gathered, enlightened and sanctified. Likewise, please fill our congregation and the whole Christian Church on earth with the Holy Spirit. Renew them, that many more would be called by the Gospel, enlightened with Your gifts, sanctified and kept in the faith. Lord, in Your mercy,

C:  hear our prayer.

P:  Almighty God, look with favor upon those who serve out their vocation in the armed forces. Protect them from all harm and danger as they serve and defend their neighbor. Keep them grounded in faith and Christ’s unfailing love. Lord, in Your mercy,

C:  hear our prayer.

P:  Merciful Lord, please look with compassion upon those who are sick, hurting, facing surgery or downtrodden [especially…]. Visit them in their distress, grant them relief from pain, and let them fix their eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of life. Lord, in Your mercy,

C:  hear our prayer.

P:  Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray,  trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

PREFACE

P:  The Lord be with you.

DISTRIBUTION

DISTRIBUTION HYMNS

Red Book 31                                      “Amazing Grace”

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found;

Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved;

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed!

Thro’ many dangers, toils, and snares

I have already come;

‘Tis grace has bro’t me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

Than when we first begun.

Red Book 16                              “Blessed Assurance”

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!

Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!

Heir of salvation, purchase of God,

Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long;

This is my story, This is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight,

Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;

Angels descending bring from above

Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long;

This is my story, This is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, all is at rest,

I in my Savior am happy and blest;

Watching and waiting, looking above,

Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long;

This is my story, This is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long.

Red Book 9                                      “Beautiful Savior”

Beautiful Savior, King of creation,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Truly I’d love thee, Truly I’d serve thee,

Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands

Robed in flow’rs of blooming spring;

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,

He makes our sorrowing spirit sing.

Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight,

And the sparkling stars on high;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer,

Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the nations,

Son of God and Son of Man!

Glory and honor, Praise, adoration,

Now and forevermore be Thine!
