FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

May 19, 2019

PRESERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER…When the Gentiles began showing up, the Church was left with a question.  Were the Gentiles those whom the Father had also elected, or were they intruders?  God had already shared an answer to this question.  The Gentiles were no longer the outsiders who did not belong but a people who shared in the gift of forgiveness and the promise of the resurrection to everlasting life.  All of this unfolded in small steps until, in the wake of Pentecost, this truth was made clear and plain for all to see.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

P:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen!

P:  Praise the Lord!

C: Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens!

P:  Praise Him for His mighty deeds; praise Him according to His excellent greatness!

C: Praise Him with trumpet sound; praise Him with lute and harp!

P:  Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

C: Praise the Lord!

OPENING UP TO GOD…

P:  God who is gracious and merciful:

C: We confess our sins to you, the sins in our thoughts, words and actions.  You command us to love one another as You have loved us.  Our love for others often misses the mark.  Instead of warmly welcoming others, too often we have approached people with cold hearts.  Instead of extending Your mercy and grace, too often we have kept it just for ourselves.  Forgive us today on account of Your Son—Jesus.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.  Amen.

SONG OF CONFESSION:                                                 Twice through

Change my heart, oh God.  Make it ever true.

Change my heart, oh God.  May I be like You.

You are the potter.  I am the clay.

Mold me and make me.  This is what I pray.

Change my heart, oh God.  Make it ever true.

Change my heart, oh God.  May I be like You.

…AND RECEIVE GOD’S FORGIVENESS

P:  Jesus said, “Whatever you ask in my Father’s name, it will be given to you.”  Having asked for forgiveness by confessing to the Father, now receive the forgiveness you desire.  Jesus died for your sins and took on your punishment.  You are forgiven.  I announce God’s grace and forgiveness in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  The Lord be with You!

C: And also with you!

P:  We pray together:

C: O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will.  Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found.  We pray this in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

First Lesson:                       Acts 11:1-18

What God has made clean do not call common.

     Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.  So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcision party criticized him, saying, “You went to uncircumcised men and ate with them.” But Peter began and explained it to them in order: “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, something like a great sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to me. Looking at it closely, I observed animals and beasts of prey and reptiles and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ But I said, ‘By no means, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ But the voice answered a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, do not call common.’ This happened three times, and all was drawn up again into heaven. And behold, at that very moment three men arrived at the house in which we were, sent to me from Caesarea. And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. And he told us how he had seen the angel stand in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon who is called Peter; he will declare to you a message by which you will be saved, you and all your household.’ As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God’s way?” When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, “Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God

GOSPEL:                       John 13:31-35

A new commandment do I give to you that you love one another as I have loved you. I am going to the Father.

P:  When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

“My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord

C: Praise to you, O’ Christ

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

SERMON HYMN: “I Love You Lord”

I love You, Lord

and I lift my voice

to worship You

o my soul, rejoice!

Take joy, My King, in what You hear,

may it be a sweet, sweet sound

in Your ear.

SERMON

CREED

C: I have faith in God, in response to overwhelming love…I believe that God created me and all that I have and has given to me gifts beyond measure.

I have faith in Jesus, who emptied Himself out of His love for me.  I believe that Christ died on a cross for my sin, conquered death and the power of evil, and was raised to life on the third day.  His death is mine, His resurrection is mine, new life is mine because of Jesus’ words and work.

I believe in the Holy Spirit in response to overwhelming love.  I believe that the Holy Spirit is present here among us and lives within each person.  The Spirit continues to call people by the Gospel and creates and builds the church of Christ.  Through the power of the Spirit I have power to stand in strength and against all adversity.

I believe that Jesus is preparing a place for me and will come again to take each of us to be with Him.  Amen.

OFFERING

We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us—ourselves, our time, our possessions.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

C: hear our prayer.

P:  Almighty Father, You met a divided world with one saving love and will, manifested in the incarnation, suffering, death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus.  Make us one people in Him and bless all efforts to come into true unity.  Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P:  Give us Your Spirit, O Lord, that we welcome the stranger and boldly speak Your Word to those who have not heard it.  Guide us by Your grace that we be faithful witnesses until You come in Your glory to complete Your perfect plan.  Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P:  Govern the nation, O Lord, and bless our leaders, that they be people of good moral conscience and integrity, for the sake of the poor and the oppressed, and for the encouragement of virtue and good works.  Lord, in Your mercy,

C: hear our prayer.

P:  Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Christ Jesus, our Lord.

CHOIR ANTHEM:             Feast of Grace

By: Ruth Elaine Schram

In the Lord’s house we find that the table is spread,

with a fountain of wine and a banquet of bread;

an outpouring of love, an abundance of peace,

and we taste and see the feast of grace.

In His presence divine, how our spirits are fed,

with the fountain of wine and the banquet of bread.

So we share in His love, and we pass on His peace,

and we taste and see that the Lord is good;

and we taste and see the feast of grace.

Taste and see that that Lord is good;

feast your heart and soul on the sacred food.

Wondrous love and eternal peace

are the blessings of the feast of grace.

All are welcome to dine where our Savior has led,

at the fountain of wine and the banquet of bread,

where He shows us His love, and He gives us His peace,

and we taste and see that the Lord is good;

and we taste and see that the Lord is good;

and we taste and see the feast of grace.

PREFACE

P:  The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P:  Lift up your hearts.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me—loves me still, Though I’m very weak and ill;

That I might from sin be free, Bled and died upon the tree.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me—He who died, Heaven’s gate to open wide;

He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in.

Yes, Jesus loves me!  Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me!  The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me—He will stay Close beside me all the way,

Though hast bled and died for me, I will henceforth live for the.
