SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

May 6, 2018

THEME:  The Father has loved the Son, and the Son has loved all people, making a home for us with Him in the Father’s love.  Dwelling in the Father’s love by faith in Jesus, we keep His commandments.  As we come to realize that we are loved by God, we discover that keeping His commandments is not burdensome, but a joy.  Jesus’ word of promise fills us with joy.  He has chosen us to be His fruit-bearing friends who love people the way He does.  Alleluia!

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy     Spirit.

C: Amen.

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

P:  Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires are known, and from whom no secrets are hid:  Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen.

P:  If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

~Silence for reflection~

P:  Most merciful God,

C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.  We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.  Amen.

P:  God, our heavenly Creator, hears the prayers of all people and answers those prayers.  Our prayer for forgiveness is answered in the person and work of Jesus Christ, who died for our sin that we might have new life.  By the command of Jesus, I forgive you all of your sins—in the name of the Father, and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

THE HYMN OF PRAISE

P:     This is the feast of victory for our God Alleluia.

C:     Worthy is Chris, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.  Power and riches and wisdom and strength, and honor and blessing and glory are his.

This is the feast of victory for our God.  Alleluia.

Sing with all the people of God and join in the hymn of all creation:

Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever.  Amen.

C:  Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

    First Lesson:                                                       Acts 10:34-48

Peter shares a message about Jesus.

So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.

CHOIR ANTHEM                       “You Are Precious, Lord, to Me”

By Douglas Nolan & Jimbo Stevens

More than silver, more than di’monds, You are precious, Lord, to me

More than riches, more than power, You are precious, Lord, to me.

More than kingdoms, more than honor, Lord, Your’re ev’rything I need.

More than silver, more than di’monds, You are precious, Lord, to me.

If the riches of earth were mine to hold, all the silver and all of the gold,

I’d rather have treasure in heaven above.

Nothing compares nothing compares, nothing compares

with Your precious love.

More than silver, more than di’monds, You are precious, Lord, to me.

More than riches, more than power, You are precious, Lord, to me.

More than kingdoms, more than honor, Lord, Your’re ev’rything I need.

More than silver, more than di’monds, You are precious, Lord, to me.

You are precious, Lord, to me.

Holy Gospel:                                                                        John 15:9-17

Loving one another, we abide in God’s love.

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

SERMON HYMN                                         “Be Thou My Vision”

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;

Nought be all else to me, save that Thou art—

Thou my best thought, by day or by night,

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;

Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

High King of heaven, my victory won,

May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall.

Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

SERMON   “The Source of Love”     Pastor Jeremy Lucke

CONFESSING OUR FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

    Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

And born of the virgin Mary.

    He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, died, and was buried.

    He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again,

    He ascended into heaven,

And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

    The Holy Christian Church,

    The communion of saints,

    The forgiveness of sins,

    The resurrection of the body

    And the life everlasting.  Amen.
