TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

November 19, 2017

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER…The darkening days of the world are a time for God’s people to be looking toward the light—the light of Christ.  Through our worship, we call out to our gracious God to brighten our lives as only He can.  With the psalmist we call out, “Satisfy us in the morning with Your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days” (Psalm 90:14).  God promises to satisfy us not only for our earthly lives but eternally as well.  Looking toward that time of great surprise with confidence and hope, we say with the psalmist, “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us” (Psalm 90:17a), and we respond to that favor with our heartfelt praise.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING PRAYER

P:  Direct us, O Lord, in our worship today.  Through Your love and forgiveness, lead us from darkness into Your light.  By the working of the Holy Spirit, make us ready to bring the light of Your grace to our community and world.  This we ask in the name of Jesus.  We thank You— Father, Son + and Holy Spirit for Your presence in worship.

C:  Amen.

BEING HONEST TO GOD………..

P:  As children of the light and well beloved by our gracious God, let us come with confidence before the throne of grace to confess our sins.

C:  Almighty God, whose compassion never fails, we come before You in sorrow.  We know that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed.  Grant us Your mercy, and spare us from the just punishment of our sin, which our Lord Jesus Christ has borne for us on the cross.  Renew us by Your Holy Spirit, that we may walk in the light of Your love, now and forever.

Silence for reflection

RECEIVING GOD’S GRACE…….

P:  Almighty God in his mercy has given his Son to die for you and for his sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of the Word I       therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

OPENING SONG: “Blessed Assurance”                                                          TOSB 16

  1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!

Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!

Heir of salvation, purchase of God,

Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long;

This is my story, This is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long.

  1. Perfect submission, perfect delight,

Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;

Angels descending bring from above

Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long;

This is my story, This is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long.

  1. Perfect submission, all is at rest,

I in my Savior am happy and blest;

Watching and waiting, looking above,

Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long;

This is my story, This is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long.

BAPTISM OF ANDREW WILLIAM

APOSTLES’ CREED                                                                                      LBW pg 85

C:    I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

                 Maker of heaven and earth.

       And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

                 Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,

                 Born of the virgin Mary,

                 Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

                 Was crucified, died and was buried.

                 He descended into hell.

                 The third day He rose again from the dead.

                 He ascended into heaven

                 And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

                 From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

       I believe in the Holy Spirit,

                 The holy Christian Church,

                          The communion of saints,

                 The forgiveness of sins,

                 The resurrection of the body,

                 And the life + everlasting.  Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER                                                                                LBW pg 91

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever.  Amen.

FIRST LESSON:                                                                       I Thessalonians 5: 1-11

God has destined us for salvation through Jesus.

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

GOSPEL:                                                                                           Matthew 25:14-30

Jesus tells the parable of the talents

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

DISTRIBUTION

DISTRIBUTION HYMNS

“Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me”                                                                       TOSB 181

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me

Hide myself in Thee; Let the water and the blood,

From Thy riven side which flowed, be of

Sin the double cure, save me from its guilt and pow’r.

Not the labor of my hands, can fulfill

Thy law’s demands; could my zeal no respite know,

Could my tears forever flow, all for

Sin could not atone; Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hands I bring, simply

To Thy cross I cling; naked, come to Thee for dress,

Helpless look to Thee for grace; foul, I

To the fountain fly, wash me. Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath, when my

Eyes shall close in death, which I soar to worlds unknown,

See Thee on Thy judgment throne, Rock of

Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.

“Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us”                                                            TOSB 183

Savior, like a shepherd lead us,

Much we need Thy tender care;

In thy pleasant pastures feed us,

For our use Thy folds prepare.

Blessed Jesus, Blessed Jesus,

Thou hast bought us, Thine we are;

Blessed Jesus Blessed Jesus,

Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.

We are Thine, do Thou befriend us,

Be the Guardian of our way;

Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,

Seek us when we go astray;

Blessed Jesus Blessed Jesus,

Hear Thy children when they pray;

Blessed Jesus Blessed Jesus,

Hear Thy children when they pray.

Thou hast promised to receive us;

Poor and sinful though we be.

Thou hast mercy to relieve us,

Grace to cleanse and pow’r to free;

Blessed Jesus Blessed Jesus,

Early let us turn to Thee;

Blessed Jesus Blessed Jesus,

Early let us turn to Thee.

Early let us seek Thy favor;

Early let us do Thy will;

Blessed Lord and only Savior,

With Thy love our bosoms fill;

Blessed Jesus Blessed Jesus,

Thou hast loved us, love us still;

Blessed Jesus Blessed Jesus,

Thou hast loved us, love us still.

“To God be the Glory”                                                                                 TOSB 241

To God be the glory, great things He has done;

So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,

Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,

And opened the life gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

 Let the earth hear His voice!

 Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

 Let the people rejoice!

 O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

 And give Him the glory, great things He has done.

O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,

To every believer the promise of God;

The vilest offender who truly believes,

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

 Let the earth hear His voice!

 Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

 Let the people rejoice!

 O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

 And give Him the glory, great things He has done.

Great things He has taught us, great things He has done,

And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;

But purer, and higher, and greater will be

Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

 Let the earth hear His voice!

 Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

 Let the people rejoice!

 O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

 And give Him the glory, great things He has done.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

P:  Almighty God, thank you for the light you have given us today.  Now use us to send the light of your truth, grace and mercy into the world.  Teach us to trust you as we use our “talents” this week.  In Jesus’ name we pray.

CLOSING SONG: “On Our Way Rejoicing”                                                   LBW 260

On our way rejoicing Gladly let us go.

Christ our Lord has conquered; Vanquished is the foe.

Christ without our safety; Christ within our joy;

Who, if we be faithful, Can our hope destroy?

On our way rejoicing; As we forward move,

Harken to our praises, O blest God of Love!

Unto God the Father Joyful songs we sing;

Unto God the Savior Thankful hearts we bring;

Unto God the Spirit Bow we and adore,

On our way rejoicing Now and evermore.

On our way rejoicing; As we forward move,

Harken to our praises, O blest God of Love!
