The Gazette Times reported today that a coach and six players from the Philomath High School footlball team were cited in a hazing incident. I have had conversations with people involved, school officials and fellow pastors in Philomath. I strongly encourage all of the Peace family (as you already do so well!) to be ambassadors of peace through this conflict.
The conflict is at a boiling point for many right now. Here are some tips in how to bring peace in the moment (this is taken from our study last year of Bill Graybill’s book, Resolve Conflict God’s Way):
Avoid……..grumbling and complaining. The natural thing to do is blame and point the finger.
Avoid……..half truths. It is so easy to make assumptions when we just don’t know all the facts.
Avoid………gossip and slander. It naturally feels good to join in the chatter.
Do………..Build others up. Ephesians 4:29 is instructive, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.” This is hard!!!!
As you can see, doing the items that we are to avoid are so easy to do. Following Ephesians 4:29 is the narrow and difficult path we are asked to walk.
I am speaking to the choir here. Thank you for your active role in bringing peace–a peace which was first offered to us through Jesus.
I will be at Peace at 7 pm tonight sharing/answering questions about this summer’s LCMS National Convention. Come check it out or come to talk and pray.
Peace be with you and through you to others!
