PROVING OURSELVES………………We really care about how we look, how we will perform and we will be judged by others. I was reminded of these truths on vacation as I was flipping through the channels and the movie, “Rocky”, came on.
Rocky is the type of person that must be seen as a fighter and finisher. Sitting next to his girlfriend, Rocky says this:
“I just wanna prove somethin’–I ain’t no bum………..It don’t matter if I lose………..Don’t matter if he opens my head………..The only thing I wanna do is go the distance–that’s all. Nobody’s ever gone fifteen rounds with Creed. If I go them fifteen rounds, an’that bell rings an’ I’m still standin’, I’m gonna know then I weren’t just another bum from the neighborhood.”
I think we all have a little of Rocky inside of us. We want to look good. We want others to know that we did our best. We want to make sure that we must prove ourselves.
That’s okay, but we must remember that we don’t have to prove ourselves to God. God is not impressed by our achievements–God is pleased with our faith in Him.
This takes off the pressure. God accepts us just as we are. As long as we have that tiny little mustard seed of faith in His Son–Jesus–we are golden in God’s sight.
Just as children do not have to prove themselves in order to gain their parents love and affection, God does the same for us. I hope you find comfort here!
PASTOR AWAY…………….I am away for the Northwest District Convention until Saturday. Bob and I are serving Peace as delegates for this very important meeting. Keep us in prayer and ask for the Lord’s presence during this time. While I am away, if you need pastoral care, please contact Elaine or Oscar. I will be periodically checking email messages, but my response will not be immediate.
