COMMUNITY………….God made us so that we are in community!  Yes, it is true!  Think of Jesus and his disciples.  Jesus developed each of his disciples in a community.  Although the gospels do not detail every moment of Jesus’ time with the disciples, we can well imagine that much of the disciple’s  development came by having dinners, conversations and walks in communal space with Jesus.  We were not meant to be alone.  In fact, according to Genesis 2:8, God says, “It is not good that the man should be alone.”  The classic interpretation on this passage is that it is directly speaking to marriage.  However, this can also easily be interpreted as God’s way of saying community matters!

What does it mean to be in community today?  It means to be engaged and manage well our relationships with family, with small groups, church, and those outside of the church.

Do you have any thoughts on the importance of community?  Share them with me.  I’d love to hear your insights too!

DOING PENANCE………This week in Adult Bible Study we are going to discover more about Martin Luther’s time in the monastery.  Luther renounced all worldly passions and took vows of celibacy, poverty, and obedience to the church.  Luther outdid all the other brothers in acts of service, prayer, study and piety.  He disciplined and punished his body.  We will see how he wore out his supervising priest with constant confessions.

There is something for us to learn in this story.  Here is a critical question to be thinking about for our time of discussion:  What happens to people when they don’t feel or know that they are loved?

We will begin at 9:45 am in the sanctuary with opening and then begin with a skit.
