Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER………….. On Palm Sunday and throughout Jesus’ Passion, many voices were raised to oppose Him.  But only one voice, Jesus’, calls us to look beyond the seeming tragedy of His death on the cross.  As we recall our Lord’s Passion, we also anticipate joining those who sing “Hosanna” in eternity. Our service today is extra special as five of our youth are confirmed.

RINGING OF THE BELL

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

INVOCATION

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

OPENING BLESSING

Leader: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.

People:  Hosanna in the highest!

GOSPEL READING:                                                John 12:12-19

Jesus enters Jerusalem.

Leader:  The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter.

People: Glory to You, O Lord.

Leader:  The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.  So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, crying out,

People: “Hosanna!  Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”

Leader:  And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,

People: “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!”

Leader:  His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and had been done to Him.  The crowd that had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness.  The reason why the crowd went to meet Him was that they heard He had done this sign.  So the Pharisees said to one another,

People: “You see that you are gaining nothing.  Look, the world has gone after Him.”

Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Leader:  When the crowd was greeting Jesus, the people were quoting a verse from Psalm 118, which Luther said was his favorite.  Verse 25 begins, “Save us, we pray, O Lord!”  “Save, Lord” is the meaning of “Hosanna.”  As we process with our palms, let us join our voices together as we sing the hymn, “All Glory, Laud, and Honor.”

During the Opening Hymn, the congregation is invited to walk forward and place their palm branches into one of the two receptacles.

OPENING HYMN                    “All Glory, Laud, and Honor”

Text: Theodulph of Orleans, c. 760-821; tr. Johne M. Neale, 1818-1866, alt. Tune: Melchoir Teschner, 1584-1635; Copyright 1978 Lutheran Church in America, The American Lutheran Church, ELC of Canada, LCMS

Chorus:     All glory, laud and honor

To you, redeemer, king

To whom the lips of children

Made sweet hosannas ring.

                                                                   .

You are the king of Israel

And David’s royal Son,

Now in the Lord’s name coming,

Our King and Blessed One.

Chorus

The company of angels

Are praising you on high;

Creation and all mortals

In chorus make reply.

Chorus

The multitude of pilgrims

With palms before you went.

Our praise and prayer and anthems

Before you we present.

Chorus

To you, before your Passion,

They sang their hymns of praise.

To you, now high exalted,

Our melody we raise.

Chorus

Their Praises you accepted;

Accept the prayers we bring,

Great author of all goodness,

O good and gracious King.

Chorus

WE CONFESS OUR SINS

Leader: Lord, we come before You in prayer today, asking for forgiveness.

People: Gracious God, we admit that we are sinners, and that we have gone against your loving will in thoughts, words, and actions.  We do not want to hear your word challenging us in our lives and our priorities.  We ask for your forgiveness, so that we are freed from our sin to live in your gracious love.

GOD FORGIVES

Leader: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus he gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

People: Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON

Epistle:                Philippians 2:5-11

Humbled to death on a cross that we might be exulted with Him.

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING:                  John 19:1-16

Pilate is caught between a rock and a hard place.

19 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.

And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe.

They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.

Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.”

So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”

When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.”

The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.”

When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid.

He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?”

11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.”

13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha.

14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!”

15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”

16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,

Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Children’s Message

CHOIR ANTHEM               “Hosanna, Hosanna!”

Words by Joseph M. Martin. Lyrics by J. Paul Williams.

Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna to the King.

Hosanna, Hosanna, rang through crowded streets.

Thousands came to see Him, to cheer as He rode by.

Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna was their cry.

.

Jesus entered into Jerusalem,

People spread their garments on the road.

Blessed is the seed of Abraham.

Blessed is the King foretold.

The multitudes all praised Him,

They wave the palms in praise.

They welcomed the Messiah

as He came through the gates.

.

Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna to the King.

Hosanna, Hosanna, rang through crowded streets.

Thousands came to see Him, to cheer as He rode by.

Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna was their cry.

.

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna to the King.

Hosanna, hosanna came through the crowded streets.

Thousands came to see Him,

To raise their voices and sing

Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna to the King.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!

APOSTLES’ CREED

ALL:       I believe in God, the Father almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

And was born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate.

Was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The holy Christian Church,

The communion of saints,

The forgiveness of sins,

The resurrection of the body,

And the life everlasting.  Amen.

OFFERING

We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us—our selves, our time, our possessions.

OFFERTORY

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Leader:  Let us pray to the Lord that He may hear us on behalf of the people of God and all people as they have need.

Leader:  Lord Jesus, although knowing about Judas’ plans, You arranged for the Passover, which foreshadowed the Lord’s Supper.  Strengthen the faith of Your people here and wherever the Sacrament is celebrated, as we receive the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation, which come to us through Your body and blood.  Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader: Lord Jesus, although their Lord, at table You taught Your disciples the nature of true servanthood.  Guide and direct all who work in the healing professions, in police departments and armed forces, in all levels of government, and in the cultivation and distribution of crops, that they see themselves as Your servants for the common good and be given the wisdom and guidance they need.  Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader: In the garden, although You prayed in anguish, You asked that the Father’s will be done.  We remember before You especially (names………..).  Grant courage to them and all who struggle with sudden crisis or long-term illness, all who are near death, and all who languish, unjustly imprisoned and discriminated against, that they rely on Your gracious plans.  Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader:  On the cross, although facing death Yourself, You promised paradise to a criminal and proclaimed the payment for our sins finished.  Grant that Your Holy Spirit open the ears of those who have not heard the Gospel in terms they can understand and believe, that they rejoice with us in the forgiveness of sins and the paradise that awaits all who rely on Your grace and love.  Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader: At the end, although You could not do anything physically, You committed Your spirit to the Father.  Into Your hands, heavenly Father, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy for the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

People: Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom,

And the power, and the glory,

Forever and ever.  Amen

A NOTE ABOUT OUR FINAL HYMN

Leader: As a student in Bremen, Germany, Joachim Neander lived a godless life. Though both his father and grandfather were Lutheran ministers, Joachim wasted his life in wild and reckless living. Then, when Neander was twenty, a preacher named Under-Eyke came to Bremen. Neander went to the meeting intending to ridicule the preacher, but instead was converted. Neander took on strong Christian views and was strongly evangelistic. Because of this, he upset the authorities and was removed from his work. After losing his position, he lived for a time in a cave and wrote hymns. He died very young, at the age of thirty, but Neander left behind a legacy of praise to God—including our final hymn today.

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,

the King of creation!

O my soul, Praise Him,

for He is your health and salvation!

Let all who hear,

Now to His temple draw near;

Joining in glad adoration!

.

Praise to the Lord,

who o’er all things is wondrously reigning,

And, as on wings of an eagle,

uplifting, sustaining.

Have you not seen

All that is needful has been

Sent by His gracious ordaining?

.

Praise to the Lord,

who will prosper your work and defend you;

Surely His goodness and mercy

shall daily attend you.

Ponder anew

What the Almighty can do,

If with His love He befriend you.

.

Praise to the Lord,

Oh let all that is in me adore Him!

All that has life and breath,

come now with praises before Him.

Let the Amen

Sound from His people again,

Gladly forever we adore Him.
