A Month of Miracles

August 22 & 23, 2020

AS WE GATHER… We are continuing to look at a few of Jesus’ many miracles. Today’s miracle is one you have probably heard of before: Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand. There is an important lesson for us to take home and apply in our circumstances. Everything within us teaches us that we (and our loved ones) should get what we need before thinking of what others might need. This is true whether we are talking about our time or our treasures. The feeding of the five thousand directs us to think differently. It orients us to count on God’s provision and to think of other’s needs first. This is truly courageous and faithful living!

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING SONG: “On Eagle’s Wings”                                       TOSB 155

Words & Music by Michael Joncas “The Other Song Book” ©1984, 1987 by Dave Anderson.  The Fellowship Publications, Edina, MN

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,

who abide in His shadow for life

Say to the Lord, “My refuge, my Rock in whom I trust.

CHORUS: And He will raise you up on eagles wings

bear you on the breath of dawn,

Make you to shine like the sun,

and hold you in the palm of His hand.

The Snare of the fowler will never capture you,

and famine will bring you no fear

under His wings your refuge,

His faithfulness your shield.

CHORUS

You need not fear the terror of the night,

not the arrow that flies by day;

though thousands fall about you,

near, you it shall not come.

CHORUS

P:    In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:   Amen.

P:    Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your steadfast love;

C:    according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

P:    Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

C:   And cleanse me from my sin!

P:    Create in me a clean heart, O God,

C:    and renew a right spirit within me.

P:    Cast me not away from your presence,

C:    and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

P:    Restore to me the joy of your salvation,

C:    and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Psalm 51:1-2, 10-12

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

P:    Let us confess our sin to God, our merciful Father.

Silence for reflection

P:    Gracious God,

C:    with sorrow and repentance, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We are by nature sinful and unclean. Daily we have sinned and done things we ought not to have done and have not done that which we are to have been doing as Your servants. Trusting in Your mercy, we come to You for forgiveness. Our trust is not in ourselves but in the merits of Your Son, Jesus. Have mercy on us, O God. Grant us the forgiveness of sins, and by the power of the Holy Spirit at work within our hearts and lives, lead us into ways that reflect Your goodness and love.

P:    God is gracious and merciful and hears us. By the command of our Lord, your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:   Amen.

EPISTLE:                                                                          Romans 12:1-8

Reader: I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God!

HOLY GOSPEL:                                                                 Mark 6:30-44

Reader: The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things. And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii[a] worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass.So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ!

MESSAGE

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

ALL:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,

Born of the virgin Mary,

Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The holy Christian Church,

The communion of saints,

The forgiveness of sins,

The resurrection of the body,

And the life + everlasting.  Amen.

PRAYER

P:    O Lord, You have promised to hear and answer the prayers of Your people. With confidence in Your Word, we come before Your throne of grace with petitions and supplications on behalf of all Your people and all people as they have need.

Brief silence

P:    Grant grace to the earth, that it may be fruitful and supply the needs of all people. As You have given life to the seed and brought forth the first bud of the plants of the field, so deliver us from drought and famine and bring forth a rich harvest to satisfy the hungry with the good things of Your mercy. O Lord,

C:   You know us; remember us and visit us with Your grace.

P:    Give us patience in tribulation and restore to us the joy of Your salvation. Comfort the weeping with Your loving kindness, console the grieving with the hope of the resurrection and help us to live in harmony with one another. O Lord,

C:   You know us; remember us and visit us with Your grace.

P:    Deliver the world from the voices of anger, dispute and hate that instigate violence and threaten the safety of people in their homes, schools and workplaces. Give Your blessing to those who lead us in this land and to all the nations and peoples of the world, that justice, freedom and respect may be multiplied and the weak and the unborn preserved from harm. O Lord,

C:   You know us; remember us and visit us with Your grace.

P:    Hear us for the sake of all those who cry to You in their need. Heal the sick, relieve the suffering, comfort the mourning and guide the dying to peace in Christ [especially Your servants…]. Restore those wounded in body or soul with Your abundant grace, and according to Your will deliver them from all their troubles. O Lord,

C:   You know us; remember us and visit us with Your grace.

P:    These and whatever else is needful for this body and life we pray You to grant us in the name of and for the sake of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He has given us His name that we may pray with confidence before Your throne of grace and with joy in our hearts. To Him be glory with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:   Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

BENEDICTION

CLOSING SONG: “Go Out with Joy” (Choir Recording – May 28, 2017)

Words and Music by Dave and Jean Perry © MCMXCIV by Alfred Publishing Co., Inc.

For you shall go out with joy, be led forth in peace;

the mountains and the hills break forth into singing.

Go with joy, be led forth in peace;

the mountains and the hills break forth.

And all the trees of the field, the trees of the field,

and all of the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Harken all, incline your ear, hear the word that I bring.

Unto you a promise shall be made.

For as the rain and snow and sunlight

come down to earth in season,

so shall my word go forth throughout the earth.

For you shall go out with joy, be led forth in peace;

the mountains and the hills break forth into singing.

Go out with joy, be led forth in peace;

the mountains and the hills break forth.

And all the trees of the field, the trees of the field,

and all of the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

For you shall feed the hungry, Go with joy,

clothe the poor, go in peace,

walk in righteousness in all that you do.

For you shall feed the hungry, clothe the poor,

walk in the righteousness in all that you do.

For you shall go out with joy be led forth in peace.

The mountains and hills break forth into singing.

Go out with joy, be led forth in peace;

the mountains and the hills break forth.

And all the trees of the field, the trees of the field,

and all of the trees of the field shall clap their hands,

Go out with joy, shall clap their hands,

led forth in peace, shall clap their hands,

go forth with joy, with joy!
