FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

July 14, 2019

AS WE GATHER…God’s people have been rescued! The heavenly Father has “delivered us”—rescued us—from the darkness of sin, death, and the power of the devil. He has “transferred us” into the kingdom of grace in His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. We have been set free to serve God in the power and example of Jesus: He seeks, He loves, He saves.

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALLING ON GOD                                                          Psalm 103:1-5

P:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

P:  Bless the Lord, O my soul,

C: and all that is within me, bless His holy name!

P:  Bless the Lord, O my soul,

C: and forget not all His benefits,

P:  who forgives all your iniquity,

C: who heals all your diseases,

P:  who redeems your life from the pit,

C: who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,

P:  who satisfies you with good

C: so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

WE CONFESS…

P:  Beloved in the Lord, we have not lived a life worthy of our righteous Shepherd.  We have all built dividing walls of hostility.  Let us then confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father.

Silence for reflection

P:  Heavenly Father,

C: We confess that we have divisiveness and have failed to live at peace with one another.  At times, we have treated others as inferior because of differences of language and race, intelligence and appearance, gender and age.  Forgive us for our prejudice and break down the walls that divide us from one another and from You.

…AND RECEIVE FORGIVENESS

P:  You were once foreigners and strangers to God, but now you have been brought near by the blood of Christ.  He Himself is our peace.  Jesus Christ died and was raised for you so that you might be reconciled with God and with one another.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

SONG OF PEACE: “Let There Be Peace on Earth”       Twice Through

Let there be peace on earth – And let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth – The peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father – family all are we.

Let us walk with each other – In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me – Let this be the moment now.

With every step I take – Let this be my solemn vow.

To take each moment – And live each moment.

In peace eternally.

Let there peace on earth and let it begin, with me.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  Let us Pray… Lord Jesus Christ, in Your deep compassion You rescue us from whatever may hurt us. Teach us to love You above all tings and to love our neighbors as ourselves; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

OUR READINGS ABOUT RESCUE

OLD TESTAMENT:                                                     Leviticus 19:9-18

God rescued His people from slavery in Egypt.

“When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the LORD your God.

“You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.

“You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning. You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the LORD.

“You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.

“You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE:                                                                      Colossians 1:1-14

Paul’s gratitude to God for the faith, love and witness of the Colossians.

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,

To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL:                                                                            Luke 10:25-37

The Good Samaritan

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”  But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denariiand gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

P:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

APOSTLES’ CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

             Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

             Born of the virgin Mary,

             Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, died and was buried.

             He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

             He ascended into heaven

And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

             The holy Christian Church,

                     The communion of saints,

             The forgiveness of sins,

             The resurrection of the body,

And the life + everlasting.  Amen

BENEDICTION

CLOSING SONG: “Will the Circle be Unbroken”

There are loved ones in the glory

whose dear forms you often miss;

When you close your earthly story,

Will you join them in their bliss?

CHORUS: Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, lord, by and by
There’s a better home a-waiting
In the sky, lord, in the sky

In the joyous days of childhood

Oh, they told of wondrous love,

Pointed to the dying Savior;

Now they dwell with Him above.

CHORUS

One by one their seats were emptied,

One by one they went away.

Now the fam’ly circle’s broken;

Will it be complete one day?

CHORUS
