Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

Reader                                                         Kathy Hanna

THEME:  In 1535, Martin Luther was asked by Peter, his barber, for instruction on prayer. Luther wrote a little book explaining how he organizes his own prayers to God. He pointed to the Lord’s Prayer as well as the Ten Commandments and the Apostles’ Creed as ways to focus and form his prayers. The Bible is filled with people who prayed consistently—people like Abraham, Moses, Hannah, and David. In Today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches His disciples how to pray and shares two stories to emphasize the importance of bold, persistent prayer.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING HYMN                 “This is the Day”

Les Garrett; St. 1 © 1967, 1980, Scripture in Song. Admin by Integrity Music.

This is the day,

this is the day that the Lord hath made,

That the Lord hath made.

I will rejoice, I will rejoice and be glad in it,

And be glad in it,

This is the day that the Lord hath made,

We will rejoice and be glad in it.

This is the day,

this is the day that the Lord hath made.

.

OPENING WORDS                                                          Psalm 143

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Leader:  Hear my prayer, O Lord; give ear to my pleas for mercy!

People:  In your faithfulness answer me, in your righteousness!

Leader:  Enter not into judgment with your servant,

People:  For no one living is righteous before you.

Leader:  I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done;

People:  I ponder the work of your hands.

Leader:  Answer me quickly, O Lord!  My spirit fails!

People:  Hide not your face from me, lest I be like those who go down to the pit.

Leader:  Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, FOR IN YOU I TRUST!

People:  Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul!

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

Leader:   The Scriptures encourage us to pray without ceasing. All too often we don’t turn to God for help. The Scriptures also encourage us to give thanks in all circumstances. All too often we only return thanks when life is going well forgetting to give thanks in challenging times. We turn to the Lord today seeking His forgiveness. In this moment of silence we both remember our sin and the truth that God is willing to forgive.

~~~~~ Silence ~~~~~
Leader:  We confess……….
People:  Lord, we confess that we have missed the mark.  Wanting us to claim our position before You…….we have instead focused on where other people should be in their standing with You.  Too often we have kept track of the shortcomings of others and their faults.  Too often we have forgotten to keep track of the goodness You daily provide right before us.  Give us a new heart today—one that trusts You to be the judge of all living things.
Leader:  God, our heavenly Creator, hears the prayers of all people and answers those prayers.  Our prayer for forgiveness is answered in the person of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, who died for our sin that we might have new life.  The distance between God and ourselves has been brought together by love made perfect in the sacrifice of Jesus.  To those who believe God’s word of truth comes power to be the people of God.  Praise God for the gift of love to us.
People:  Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE            Psalm 5
Bill Sprouse Jr.; © 1975 CCCM Music; Universal Music – Brentwood Benson Publishing
Give ear to my words, O Lord
Consider my meditation.
Hearken unto the voice of my cry,
My King and my God.
.
For unto Thee will I pray,
My voice shalt Thou hear in the morning
O, Lord, in the morning
Will I direct my prayer,
Unto Thee and will look up.
(Repeat all)
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Leader:  Let us Pray…….God of glory, Father of love, peace comes from you alone.  Send us as peacemakers and witnesses to your kingdom, and fill our hearts with joy in your promises of salvation; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
People:  Amen
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Epistle             Hebrews 11:1-10, 13
We Stand on an Unseen Foundation
11 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks.
By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.
10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
Holy GOSPEL:             Luke 11:1-13
Jesus teaches His disciples to pray.
11 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:   “Father, hallowed be your name.   Your kingdom come.  Give us each day our daily bread,  and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.   And lead us not into temptation.” And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves,
for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People:  Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN         “Just a Closer Walk”
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it Jesus if you please.
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord let it be.
.
I am weak but Thou art strong.
Jesus, keep me from all wrong.
I’ll be satisfied as long,
As I walk dear Lord, close to Thee.
.
Through this world of toil and snares,
if I falter Lord who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None by Thee dear Lord, none but Thee.
.
When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more.
On that bright eternal shore,
I will walk, dear Lord, close to Thee.
.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it Jesus if you please.
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord let it be
