Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER………………. Many people today seek wise counselors.  The Holy Spirit is the world’s best counselor.  In today’s Gospel, Jesus promised that the Father would send the Holy Spirit in His name as Counselor.  We are reminded that this Counselor is with us today.  What wisdom is the Counselor sharing with us today?

RINGING OF THE BELL……..After the ringing of the bell we take a moment in silence to prepare our hearts and minds for today’s worship

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING CHORAL ANTHEM             “Spirit, Come Down”

Words & Music by Mark Hayes

Chorus:    Spirit, come down

Like the days of old.

Spirit, come down

and fill my soul.

.

Lord, I want to be used by you,

to feel your power in all do.

Spirit, come down

and fill my soul.

.

Now on the day of Pentecost

the disciples of the Lord were in one place

when suddenly from heav’n on high

came the sound of the mighty wind.

.

That mighty wind then filled the place,

and the Spirit appeared like tongues of fire.

It took control of ev’ry one

filling them with pow’r.

Chorus

Lord, I want to be used by you,

to feel your power in all do.

Spirit, come down

and fill my soul.

.

There were people there from ev’ry land,

yet they heard God’s word in the native tongue,

for the Spirit had helped them understand

the mighty word of the Lord.

Chorus

Lord, I want to be used by you,

to feel your power in all do.

Spirit, come down

and fill my soul.

Fill my soul

Chorus

Lord, I want to be used by you,

to feel your power in all do.

Spirit, come down

Spirit, come down

Spirit, come down

and fill my soul,

Fill my soul.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Leader: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

~~~~~ Silence for reflection ~~~~~
Leader: Most merciful God,
People: we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.  We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.  Amen.
Leader: Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins.  As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
THE RITE OF CONFIRMATION
Alyssa, Chandler and Kaia
Leader: Beloved in the Lord, our Lord Jesus said to His apostles: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” You have been baptized and catechized in the Christian faith according to the Lord’s desire. Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before people, I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before people, I will also deny before My Father who in in heaven.” Lift up your hearts, therefore, to the God of all grace and joyfully give answer to what I now ask you in the name of the Lord.
Leader: Do you this day in the presence of God and of this congregation acknowledge the gifts that God gave you in you Baptism?
Youth: Yes, I do.
Leader: Do renounce the devil, all his works, and all his ways?
Youth: Yes, I renounce them.
Leader: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?
Youth: Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
Leader: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord?
Youth: Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
Leader: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
Youth: Yes, I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Leader: Do you hold all the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures to be the inspired Word of God?
Youth: I do.
Leader: Do you confess the doctrine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, drawn from the Scriptures, as you have learned to know it from the Small Catechism, to be faithful and true?
Youth: I do.
Leader: Do you intend to live according to the Word of God, and in faith, word and deed to remain true to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, even to death?
Youth: I do, by the grace of God.
Leader: We rejoice with thankful hearts that you have been baptized and have received the teaching of the Lord. You have confessed the faith and been forgiven your sins. As you continue to hear the Lord’s Word and receive His blessed Sacrament, He who has begun a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Youth: Amen.
The youth kneel for the reading of their confirmation verse and to receive a blessing.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: O God, on this day long ago, Your Holy Spirit used the apostles to preach in power. Breathe new life in us today. Use us, clay vessels though we are, to build the Church upon the foundation of those apostles, with Christ as our cornerstone; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People:  Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
FIRST LESSON:                         Acts 2:1-21
Reader:  When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying,
People: “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?
Reader: Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—
People: we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”
Reader: And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another,
People: “What does this mean?”
Reader: But others mocking said,
People: “They are filled with new wine.”
Reader: But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
even on My male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out My Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
Holy GOSPEL:                   John 14:23-31
23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me,
31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People:  Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN                 “The Church’s One Foundation”
Text: Samuel J. Sone, 1839-1900, Tune: Samuel S. Wesley, 1810-1876© 2005 WORSHIPHYMNS Publishing (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.)
The Church’s One Foundation
Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;
She is his new creation
By water and the Word.
From heav’n he came and sought her
To be his holy bride;
With his own blood he bought her,
And for her life he died.
.
Elect from ev’ry nation,
Yet one o’er all the earth;
Her charter of salvation:
One Lord, one faith, one birth,
One holy name she blesses,
Partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses
with ev’ry grace endued.
.
Though with a scornful wonder
This world sees her oppressed,
By schisms rent asunder,
By heresies distressed,
Yet saints their watch are keeping;
Their cry goes up: “How Long?”
And soon the night of weeping
Shall be the morn of song.
.
Through toil and tribulation
And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation
Of peace forevermore;
Till with the vision glorious
Her longing eyes are blest,
And the great Church victorious
Shall be the Church at rest.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Forever and ever.  Amen
CLOSING HYMN            “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Text: Joachim Neander, 1650-1680; tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1829-1878, alt. Tune: Ernewerten Gesangbuch, Stralsund, 1665. © 1978 by Augsburg Publishing House, Minneapolis and Board of Publication, Lutheran Church in America, Philadelphia
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
the King of creation!
O my soul, Praise Him,
for He is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear,
Now to His temple draw near;
Joining in glad adoration!
.
Praise to the Lord,
who o’er all things is wondrously reigning,
And, as on wings of an eagle,
uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen
All that is needful has been
Sent by His gracious ordaining?
.
Praise to the Lord,
who will prosper your work and defend you;
Surely His goodness and mercy
shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do,
If with His love He befriend you.
.
Praise to the Lord,
Oh let all that is in me adore Him!
All that has life and breath,
come now with praises before Him.
Let the Amen
Sound from His people again,
Gladly forever we adore Him.
Dismissal
Leader: Go in peace. Serve the Lord
People: Thanks be to God.
