PENTECOST
June 9, 2019
PENTECOST THEME…Many people today seek wise counselors. The Holy Spirit is the world’s best counselor. In today’s Gospel, Jesus promised that the Father would send the Holy Spirit in His name as Counselor. We are reminded that this Counselor is with us today. What wisdom is the Counselor sharing with us today?
RINGING OF THE BELL
After the ringing of the bell we take a few moments in silence to prepare our hearts and minds for worship.
CHOIR ANTHEM: “Hold On to the Rock” By: Pepper Choplin
You’ve got to hold on to the Rock of Ages, hold on to the Cornerstone.
Stand strong on the Sure Foundation, surrounded by the Fortress strong.
When all the storms of life are raging, hold on…hold on to the Rock.
You’ve got to hold on to the the Rock of Ages, hold on to the Cornerstone
Stand strong on the Sure Foundation, surrounded by the Fortress strong.
When all the storms of life are raging, hold on…(repeat)
(Solo: You know that it doesn’t take a mighty
earthquake to shake the ground you stand on!
‘cause life can change like a hurricane
and blow all the plans you planned on,
Well, the ground is gonna shake and the wind is gonna blow.)
Now tell me who you gonna trust and (uh) where you gonna go?
You gotta hold on to the Rock of Ages, Hold on to the Cornerstone.
Stand strong on the Sure Foundation, surrounded by the Fortress strong.
When all the storms of life are raging, Hold on…Hold on to the rock (repeat)
(Solo: You know sometimes when life is easy,
it’s so easy to keep the faith,
to be grateful for ev’ry blessing,
when ev’ry blessing comes our way.
But when life shakes us to our very soul,
who you gonna trust and (uh) where you gonna go?)
You gotta hold on to the Rock of Ages, hold on to the Cornerstone.
Stand strong on the Sure Foundation, surrounded by the Fortress strong.
When all the storms of life are raging hold on…hold on to the Rock.
You’ve got to hold on to the rock. (Repeat)
P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
WE OPEN OURSELVES TO GOD
P: Lord, we need Your mercy. In this hour, help us to see our sin and pain and pray for a fresh start. Help us to see the shortcomings in our lives and look to You for the answers to our problems. Give us a new vision of what life can be like. Teach us to hope, to love, to give and to have faith. Lord, we need Your mercy.
Silence for Reflection
FORGIVENESS IS OURS
C: Our God has heard the cries and felt our pain and has had mercy on us. God has seen our need and provided for our salvation; seen our condition and provided the solution; seen our heart and given us a Savior. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our sin is no longer the weight that holds us down. We are free to live in victory, free from the sin of our self deceit and free from Satan’s power. Praise God for goodness.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: Let us Pray. God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, as you sent upon the disciples the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, look upon your Church and open our hearts to the power of the Spirit. Kindle in us the fire of your love and strengthen our lives for service in your kingdom. We pray this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
The day of Pentecost
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians–we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Jesus promises that the Father will send the Holy Spirit as the Counselor.
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ
SERMON HYMN: “Diverse in Culture, Nation, Race”
Diverse in culture, nation, race,
We come together by your grace.
God, let us be a meeting ground
Where hope and healing love are found.
God, let us be a bridge of care
Connecting people ev’ry-where.
Help us confront all fear and hate
And lust for pow’r that separate.
When chasms widen, storms arise,
O Holy Spirit, make us wise.
Let our resolve, like steel, be strong
To stand with those who suffer wrong.
God, let us be a table spread
With gifts of love and broken bread,
Where all find welcome, grace attends,
And enemies arise as friends.
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
And was born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The Holy Christian Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting. Amen.
