Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER… We are taking one step further in our BEING CHALLENGE today as we hear about Jesus’ habit of seeking solitude. How important seeking solitude is for us! When we practice solitude with God, we do not hear words of condemnation and judgement. In our aloneness with God, we hear about how He will always bring us salvation from our distress. It is when we spend our lives away from God that we will fall into rebellious ways and into the unhealthy patterns of this world.

OPENING SONG                                  “Jesus in the Morning”

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus in the morning,

Jesus at the noontime,

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus when the sun goes down.

Love Him, Love Him, Love Him in the morning,

Love Him at the noontime,

Love Him, Love Him, Love Him when the sun goes down.

Serve Him, Serve Him, Serve Him in the morning,

Serve Him at the noontime,

Serve Him, Serve Him, Serve Him when the sun goes down.

Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise Him in the morning,

Praise Him in the noontime,

Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise Him when the sun goes down.

CALLING ON GOD

Pastor:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Pastor:  Let us humble ourselves before God, confess our sins to Him, and ask His gracious forgiveness.

People:  We now confess to God Almighty, before the whole company of heaven and before one another, that we are sinful human beings by nature and by deed. We have not always put God first. We have done violence to others in words and deed and have not always kept our thoughts, words, and deed pure and honorable. We pray God to have mercy on us, to forgive us all our sins, and to bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

RECEIVING FORGIVENESS

Pastor:  God hears your cry for mercy and answers when you call. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Jesus and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE

I love You, Lord, and I lift my voice

To worship You, O my soul rejoice.

Take joy, my King, in what You hear,

May it be a sweet, sweet sound in Your ear.

I love You, Lord, and I lift my voice

To worship You, O my soul rejoice.

Take joy, my King, in what You hear,

May it be a sweet, sweet sound in Your ear.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Pastor:  Let us Pray. Lord Jesus Christ, Your grace goes before us and behind us. Your love is over us and beneath us. Your faithfulness will ever lead and guide us. By Your Word, draw us into Your presence and help us to treasure all that we share in You; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen.

scripture lessons

OLD TESTAMENT:                                             Numbers 21:4-9

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way.

And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”

Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”

So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL:                                                John 3:14-21

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to You O Christ.

SERMON HYMN                                “Christ Be My Leader”

Donald Paul Hustad Timothy Dudley-Smith, Copyrights Words: 1961, 1964 Hope Publishing Company Music: 1973, 1974 Hope Publishing Company

Christ be my leader by night as by day;

Safe through the darkness, for He is the way.

Gladly I follow, my future His care;

Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.

Christ be my teacher in age as in youth,

Drifting or doubting, for He is the truth.

Grant me to trust Him; Though shifting as sand,

Doubt cannot daunt me; in Jesus I stand.

Christ be my savior in calm as in strife;

Death cannot hold me, for He is the life.

Nor darkness not doubting nor sin and its stain

Can touch my salvation: with Jesus I reign.

APOSTLES’ CREED

People:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit,

And born of the virgin Mary,

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell.

On the third day He rose again

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the  right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

The holy Christian Church,

The communion of saints,

The forgiveness of sins,

The resurrection of the body,

And the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Pastor:       Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Pastor:   Gracious Father, it is Your gracious will that we sinners come to You in faith so that we may share in Christ. We thank You for the forgiveness we have in Him and for the assurance we are given that You hear and answer us for His sake. Lord, in Your mercy,

People:    hear our prayer.

Pastor:       Lord of the Church, You reveal Yourself wherever Your Word is proclaimed in all the world. Grant that all souls burdened by sin and guilt find salvation in You. Also grant that we proclaim Christ to all those for whom He gave His life, guide us here at Peace, the Northwest District, and Your people throughout the world. Lord, in Your mercy,

People:    hear our prayer.

Pastor:       Lord Jesus Christ, in love You gave Yourself on the cross that we may have life abundantly. We give You thanks for our partners in ministry: Love INC., Philomath Community Services, Camp Lutherwood, Zion Lutheran School, Dementia Warriors and Friends of the Family Ministries. Guide each partner in the year ahead as they positively impact lives in Jesus’ name. Let Your glory be made known in all their happenings. Lord, in Your mercy,

People:    hear our prayer.

Pastor:       Your Word, O Lord, commands us to pray for those in authority and in leadership over us. Bless this land in which we live. Grant that all those who govern us do so diligently. Grant that all those who enforce our laws do so wisely. Grant that all those who serve us do so wholeheartedly. Lord, in Your mercy,

People:    hear our prayer.

Pastor:       Faithful healer of both soul and body, we lift up before You those who are suffering in any way: physically, mentally, relationally, and spiritually (especially…). Grant that their hearts and minds be guarded in Christ Jesus. Lord, in Your mercy,

People:    hear our prayer.

Pastor:       Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

People:    Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those Who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, And the power, and the glory,

Forever and ever.  Amen

BENEDICTION

Pastor: Almighty God, Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever.

People: Amen.

CLOSING HYMN                 “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” LBW 551

Edward Hodges | Henry Van Dyke | Ludwig van Beethoven © Words: Public Domain Music: Public Domain

Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love!

Hearts unfold like flow’rs before thee,

Praising thee, their sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,

Drive the gloom of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness,

Fill us with the light of day.

All thy works with joy surround thee,

Earth and heav’n reflect thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around thee,

Center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain,

Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird, and flowing fountain

Call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving,

Ever blessing, ever blest,

Wellspring of the joy of living,

Ocean depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our brother,

All who live in love are thine;

Teach us how to love each other,

Lift us to the joy divine!

DISMISSAL

Pastor:  Go in Peace.  Serve the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.
