Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

AS WE GATHER………………..  The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) is the official women’s auxiliary of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Since 1942, the LWML has affirmed each woman’s identity as a child of God and her relationship with Jesus Christ. Lutheran Women in Mission are encouraged and equipped to live out their lives in active mission ministries and to support missions around the world through their sacrificial gifts of Mite Box offerings and tireless service. As God’s children, we rest in the assurance that He loves us and sent His Son to redeem us. God is our rock and salvation. That firm foundation enables us to reach out into a changing world in need of the Gospel.

RINGING OF THE BELL…………..After the ringing of the bell, we take a few moments to prepare our hearts and minds in silence for today’s worship.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CHORAL ANTHEM            “Gather By the River To Pray”

As I went down to the river to pray,

Studyin’ about that good ole way;

And who shall wear the starr crown?

Good Lord, show me the way.

.

As I went down to the river to pray,

Studyin’ about that good ole way;

And who shall wear the starr crown?

Good Lord, show me the way.

.

O brother, let’s go down,

Let’s go down, come on down.

O brother, let’s go down,

Down to the river to pray.

.

Shall we gather at the river,

Where bright angel feet have trod,

With its crystal tide forever

Flowing by the throne of God?

.

Ere we reach the shining river,

Lay we ev’ry burden down;

Grace our spirits will deliver

And provide a robe and crown.

.

Yes, we’ll gather at the river,

The beautiful, the beautiful river;

Gather with the saints at the river

That flows by the throne of God.

.

So let’s go down to the river to pray,

Studyin’ about that good ole way

That we shall wear the starry crown.

Good Lord, show us the way.

.

Soon we’ll reach the shining river,

Soon our pilgrimage will cease;

Soon our happy hearts will quiver

With the melody of peace.

.

Yes, we’ll gather at the river,

The beautiful, the beautiful river;

Gather with the saints at the river

That flows by the throne of God.

OPENING BLESSING

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen!

BEING HONEST ABOUT OURSELVES…

Leader: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

People: who made heaven and earth.

Leader: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

People: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore, You are feared.

Leader: Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

SONG OF CONFESSION             “White As Snow”

“White as Snow” By: Leon Olguin © 1990 Sound Truth Publishing (Admin. by Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing, Inc.) Universal Music – Brentwood Benson Publishing (Admin. by Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing, Inc.) CCLI License #11470020

White as snow, white as snow,

Though my sins were as scarlet

Lord, I know, Lord I know

That I’m clean and forgiven,

Through the power of your blood,

Through the wonder of your love,

Through faith in you, I know that I can be

White as snow.

(Repeat)

Leader: We confess,

People: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

Leader: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Ë Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Leader: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us pray. Almighty God, our sure hope and salvation, grant us rest in Your love and grace. You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Teach us by Your Spirit to trust in You alone and not to make flesh our strength, that we may look to You alone for our salvation, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

FIRST LESSON                    Isaiah 62:1-7

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch.  The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give.  You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

  You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married;   for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married.  For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.  On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have set watchmen; all the day and all the night they shall never be silent. You who put the Lord in remembrance, take no rest,

  and give him no rest until he establishes Jerusalem and makes it a praise in the earth.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People:  Thanks be to God.

SECOND LESSON                    Romans 10:11-17

11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?

15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People:  Thanks be to God.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

Holy GOSPEL:                     Luke 24:44-53

Leader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter.

People: Glory to You, O Lord.

44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.

49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” 50 And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.

Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People:  Praise to You, O Christ.

SERMON HYMN                “How Firm a Foundation”

Text: J. Rippon, A selection of Hymns, 1787, alt. Tune: early American; © Public Domain

How firm a foundation,

O saints of the Lord,

Is laid for your faith in

His excellent word!

What more can He say

than to you He has said,

who unto the Savior

for refuge have fled?

.

“Fear not, I am with you,

Oh, be not dismayed,

For I am your God,

and will still give you aid;

I’ll strengthen you, help you,

and cause you to stand,

Upheld by My righteous,

omnipotent hand.”

.

When through fiery trials

your pathway shall lie,

My grace, all sufficient,

shall be your supply;

The flames shall not hurt you;

I only design

your dross to consume,

and your gold to refine.

.

Throughout all their lifetime

my people shall prove

My sov’reign, eternal,

unchangeable love;

And then, when gray hairs

shall their temples adorn,

Like lambs they shall still

in my bosom be borne.

Announcements

ADULT BIBLE STUDY NEXT WEEK…………. There are a lot of things in this life that can be “easy to love”: pizza, pandas, Disneyland, rocky road ice cream and Ford PickUps. What about people? Why is it so hard sometimes to love people? To truly love someone means that we offer presence, risk taking and sacrifice. All are welcome to our adult Sunday School session on October 19 dedicated to the topic of “Sent to Love.” To be best prepared, take a look at Luke 10:25-37. How do you see presence, risk taking and sacrifice in the Good Samaritan?

PHILOMATH BLOOD DRIVE……………… Peace is hosting the next Red Cross Blood Drive in Philomath. It will take place in the Fellowship Hall on Tuesday, October 14. Consider donating blood if you are able. The site is www.redcrossblood.org to see if donation time slots are available. You can also assist the blood drive by providing treats. These can be dropped off at the church on Monday or Tuesday morning. Thank you!

SERVING ON OCTOBER 19……………… Thank you for signing up to serve each week. When you serve, you allow the day to go smoother and all the happenings to be done in good order. It also allows for our members to experience the warmth that so greatly describes our church. We are in need of ushers and someone to provide flowers for the service on October 19. If you are willing and able to serve in this way, contact Karyn!

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE………………. Are you yearning to be more connected with the people and happenings in Philomath? All are welcome to the Chamber of Commerce meeting at Peace this week: Thursday, October 16 at 11:45 am. If you plan on attending, make sure to RSVP via the Chamber’s website: philomathchamber.org

Bazaar News… Reminder to cookie bakers and candy makers…

Swing by anytime this week and drop off your handcrafted items.  They can be placed on the tables on the east side of the fellowship hall. See Jani for Granny’s Attic items.

Crafters, please include a list of items and quantities of the items you made.  We can’t wait to see your talented creations!
