Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER………………..  We are blessed with many freedoms in this country. We have freedom of speech. We have freedom of religion, with the freedom to assemble. We live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.” It is easy to rely on our citizenship for proof of our freedom. In that way, we are like the Jewish people at the time of Jesus. They relied on their Abrahamic lineage for freedom, recalling the covenant God made with Abraham and his descendants. While these national freedoms are great blessings, in the Gospel Reading, Jesus points out that for true freedom, one must be free from slavery to sin. Only in Christ is anyone truly free.

RINGING OF THE BELL…………..After the ringing of the bell, we take a few moments to prepare our hearts and minds in silence for today’s worship.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

PROCESSIONAL SONG      “A Mighty Fortress is our God”

Dick Grout; Frederick Henry Hedge; Martin Luther Words: Public Domain ; Music: 2015

A mighty fortress is our God,

A sword and shield victorious;

He breaks the cruel oppressor’s rod

And wins salvation glorious.

.

The old satanic foe

Has sworn to work us woe!

With craft and dreadful might

He arms himself to fight.

On earth he has no equal.

.

No strength of ours can match his might!

We would be lost, rejected.

But now a champion comes to fight,

Whom God himself elected.

.

You ask who this may be?

The Lord of hosts is he!

Christ Jesus mighty Lord,

God’s only Son, adored.

He holds the field victorious.

.

Though hordes of devils fill the land

All threat’ning to devour us,

We tremble not, unmoved we stand;

They cannot over pow’r us.

.

Let this world’s tyrant rage;

In battle we’ll engage!

His might is doomed to fail;

God’s judgment must prevail!

One little word subdues him.

.

God’s Word forever shall abide,

No thanks to foes, who fear it;

For God himself fights by our side

With weapons of the Spirit.

.

Were they to take our house,

Goods, honor, child, or spouse,

Though life be wrenched away,

They cannot win the day.

The Kingdom’s ours forever!

OPENING BLESSING

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen!

Leader: For by grace you have been saved through faith.

People: And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,

Leader: not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

People: For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,

Leader: which God prepared beforehand,

People: that we should walk in them.

BEING HONEST ABOUT OURSELVES…

Leader: The Word of God announces both His punishment and His pardon, His judgment and His grace.  The Law of God, summarized in the Ten Commandments, reminds us of our continual need for the Lord’s forgiveness.  As we gather for worship, let us first pray to the Lord, confessing our sins to Him and calling upon Him to have mercy upon us.

(A moment of silence to reflect on our sin and our need for the Savior)

Leader: With humble hearts, let us pray to the Lord.

People: Heavenly Father, Your Word of truth confronts us in our sin.  It convicts us of the bad things we have thought, said, and done, and of the good things we have failed to think, say, and do.  Forgive our sins against You and our sins against one another.  Through Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us and forgive us.  By the power of His death on the cross and His resurrection from the grave, reunite our lives to Your life.  Equip us by Your Holy Spirit to love and to serve others as You have first loved and served us.  Amen.

Leader: Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  Friends in Christ, let us abide in Jesus’ Word, which brings us the freedom of His forgiveness.  Almighty God, in His great mercy, has given His Son to die for you and for Jesus’ sake forgives you all your sins.  Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE             “Freely, Freely”

Words & Music by: Carol Owens, adapted from: Matt. 10:7,8 © 1971 by William J. Gaither.  The Fellowship Publication

God forgave my sin in Jesus’ name,

I’ve been born again in Jesus’ name;

And in Jesus’ name I come to you

To share His love as He told me to.

He said, “Freely, freely you have received:

Freely, freely give.

Go in my name, and because you believe,

Others will know that I live.”

.

All pow’r is giv’n in Jesus’ name,

In earth and heav’n in Jesus’ name

And in Jesus’ name I come to you

To share His pow’r as He told me to.

He said, “Freely, freely you have received:

Freely, freely give.

Go in my name, and because you believe,

Others will know that I live.”

SERVICE OF THE WORD

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

FIRST LESSON                    Psalm 46

Reader: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Men: Therefore, we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

Women: though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

Reader: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.

Men: The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; He utters His voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Reader: Come, behold the works of the Lord, how He has brought desolations on the earth.

Women: He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariots with fire.

Reader: “Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth!”The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People:  Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE                   Romans 3:19-28

God justifies us through faith in Christ.

19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has

faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith.

28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People:  Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL                         Matthew 28:16-20

            The Great Commission

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People:  Praise to You, O Christ.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

CHORAL ANTHEM               “In Christ Alone”

In Christ alone my hope is found,

His is my light, my strength, my song;

This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are still, when strivings cease!

My Comforter, my All in All,

Here in the love of Christ I stand.

.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This gift of love and righteousness,

Scorned by the ones He came to save:

.

Till on the cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied –

For every sin on Him was laid;

Here in the death of Christ I live.

.

There in the ground His body lay,

Light of the world by darkness slain:

Then bursting forth in glorious

Day Up from the grave He rose again!

.

And as He stands in victory

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,

For I am His and He is mine –

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,

This is the power of Christ in me’

From life’s first cry to final breath,

Jesus commands my destiny.

.

No power of hell, no scheme of man,

Can ever pluck me from His hand;

Till he returns or calls me home,

Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

AFFIRMATION OF OUR FAITH:

Luther’s Explanation of the Second Article of the Apostles’ Creed

People:  I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father in eternity, and also a true human being, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord.  He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned human being.  He has purchased and freed me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with his holy, precious blood and his innocent suffering and death.  He has done all this in order that I may belong to him, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in eternal righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as he is risen from the dead and lives and rules eternally.  This is most certainly true.

OFFERING

We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us—ourselves, our time, our possessions.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Forever and ever.  Amen

CLOSING SONG:                     “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee”

Edward Hodges | Henry Van Dyke | Ludwig van Beethoven © Words & Music: Public Domain

Joyful, joyful we adore thee,

God of glory, Lord of love!

Hearts unfold like flow’rs before thee,

Praising thee, their sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,

Drive the gloom of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness,

Fill us with the light of day.

.

All thy works with joy surround thee,

Earth and heav’n reflect thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around thee,

Center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain,

Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird, and flowing fountain

Call us to rejoice in thee.

.

Thou art giving and forgiving,

Ever blessing, ever blest,

Wellspring of the joy of living,

Ocean depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our brother,

 All who live in love are thine;

Teach us how to love each other,

Lift us to the joy divine!

Leader: Go in peace. Serve the Lord

People: Thanks be to God.

Announcements

ADULT BIBLE STUDY NEXT WEEK…………. Elder Dave is beginning a new adult series on the book of Philippians next Sunday, November 2. Philippians is known as the epistle of joy. How could that be possible? Wasn’t Paul in prison and facing his own death? How could Paul possibly say, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I say rejoice (Philippians 4:4)?!” Joy comes from knowing that our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). All are welcome for this discussion and study. We will meet at 9:00 am in the fellowship hall.

NEW MEMBER CLASS………….. Pastor Lucke is offering a new member class on Sunday mornings beginning Sunday, November 2. This class is open to anyone, but particularly anyone desiring membership at Peace. The goal of the class is to share the most important aspects of what we teach and believe. We also aim to share ways to build relationships and connect with the church and its happenings. Contact Pastor Lucke if you’d like to know more or participate!

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY…………….. All Saints Sunday is Sunday, November 2. This is our way of recognizing our communion with the saints of old and those who have recently departed us. Do you know of someone that you would like to be remembered as a part of the communion of saints that has gone before us? Please share the name with Karyn by October 30 (peaceinphilomath@gmail.com). We will recognize the person with the ringing of the bell and moment of silence in the service on November 2.

PHILOMATH ROTARY………….. Come and attend the Philomath Rotary Club meeting at Peace on Tuesday, October 28th. The presentation will address Youth Homeless Services in Linn and Benton Counties by Ben Martens, Community Engagement Coordinator for the Jackson Street Youth Services. A goal of the presentation is to learn more about how to support homeless youth and families. Lunch is provided. Let Lindy know if you plan on attending to make sure that enough lunches are provided.

VETERANS PRESENTATION………… Peace honors its veterans each year in the service closest to Veterans Day. If you are a veteran or know of a veteran that you would like recognized, let us know and we will include them in our slideshow presentation. We will need all the pictures by November 6.
