FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

September 17, 2017

AS WE GATHER…Our focus today is on the second of the five C’s:  Community.  In both of our readings we hear about how important it is to live well together.  Joseph forgave his brothers, even though they had sold him into slavery.  Jesus tells a parable about God’s overwhelming forgiveness and how such forgiveness leads us to forgive others.  We learn today to practice such forgiveness, living together as the family of Christ.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

RINGING OF THE BELL

After the ringing of the bell, we take a few moments in silence to prepare our hearts and minds for today’s worship.

 WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CALLING ON GOD                                                                 Psalm 103:1-5

P:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen

P:  Bless the Lord, O my soul,

C:  and all that is within me, bless His holy name!

P:  Bless the Lord, O my soul,

C:  and forget not all His benefits,

P:  who forgives all your iniquity,

C:  who heals all your diseases,

P:  who redeems your life from the pit,

C:  who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,

P:  who satisfies you with good

C:  so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

WE CONFESS…

P:  The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. Joseph’s brothers cast him into a pit, sold him into slavery, and then lied to their father about what had happened.

C:  We, too, are guilty of sinning against our own families.  We have harmed our brothers and sisters.  We have lied to our parents.  We         have covered up our sins, hoping to get away with it without getting caught.

P:  We turn to our Heavenly Father, who is merciful and gracious, and repent of our sins.

SONG OF CONFESSION                                                    “White as Snow”

White as snow, white as snow,

Though my sins were as scarlet

Lord, I know,

That I’m clean and forgiven.

Through the power of Your blood,

Through the wonder of Your love,

Through faith in You

I know that I can be white as snow.

White as snow

….AND RECEIVING FORGIVENESS

P:  As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him.  He showed compassion to us by sending His Son, Jesus, who died for our forgiveness and rose again to bring us new life.  Because of Jesus, God does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.  Therefore, as called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  Let us Pray…O God, our righteousness, restore broken relationships, especially between family members.  Provide reconciliation and peace where Satan has sown division and discord.  We pray these things through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

FIRST LESSON:                                                                 Genesis 50:15-21

Joseph and his brothers are reconciled.

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.” So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died: ‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him. His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.” But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

GOSPEL:                                                                          Matthew 18:21-35

The parable of the unforgiving servant

Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.

“Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servantfell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

Others will know that I live.”

CLOSING SONG – “This Is My Father’s World”                                 LBW 554

This is my Father’s world, And to my list’ning ears

All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres.

This is my Father’s world; I rest me in the thought

Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world; the birds their carols raise;

The morning light, the lily white, Declare their maker’s praise.

This is my Father’s world; He shines in all that’s fair.

In the rustling grass I hear him pass; He speaks to me ev’ry where.

This is my Father’s world; Oh, let me not forget

That, though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.

This is my Father’s world, why should my heart be sad?

The Lord is king, let the heavens ring; God reigns, let the earth be glad!
