SECOND SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS

January 5, 2020

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER… There is nothing in Scripture about Jesus’ growing up except what we hear today in the Gospel of St. Luke. Here Jesus makes His home within His heavenly Father’s house, discussing the Law and the Prophets with the teachers there, because they testified of Him. In the busyness of the family’s departure, Jesus is left behind. Though it might appear Jesus was disobedient, He is actually being obedient to the saving will and purpose of His Father in heaven, who sent Him to accomplish all things for our salvation.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CHOIR ANTHEM

OPENING BLESSING

L:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS

L: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires are known, and from whom no secrets are hid:  Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen.

L: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection

L: Most merciful God,

C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.  We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name.  Amen.

L: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for you, and for his sake God forgives you all your sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ he gives the power to become the children of God and gives to them the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

SERMON HYMN: “Once in Royal David’s City”

Once in royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for His bed;

Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all,

And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall;

With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Savior holy.

For He is our childhood’s pattern, Day by day like us He grew;

He was little, weak, and helpless, Tears and smiles like us He knew;

And He feels for all our sadness, And He shares in all our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love;

For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heav’n above;

And He leads His children on To the place where He is gone.

Not in that poor, lowly stable with the oxen standing by

Shall we see Him, but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high.

Then like stars His children, crowned, All in white, His praise will sound!

SERMON

CONFESSING OUR FAITH

C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

             Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

             He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

             And born of the virgin Mary.

             He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

                     Was crucified, died, and was buried.

             He descended to the dead.

             On the third day he rose again,

             He ascended into heaven,

                     And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

             He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

             The holy catholic church,

             The communion of saints,

             The forgiveness of sins,

             The resurrection of the body

             And the life everlasting.  Amen.

CLOSING SONG: “Let There Be Peace on Earth”

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father, brothers all are we.

Let me walk with my brother in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now.

With ev’ry step I take, let this be my solemn vow;

To take each moment, and live each moment in peace eternally!

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.

With God as our Father, family are we.

Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me; let this be the moment now.

With ev’ry step I take, let this be my solemn vow;

To take each moment, and live each moment in peace eternally!

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
