ALL SAINTS’ DAY

November 6,2016

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

 AS WE GATHER…………………As you look around at fellow worshipers today, you might notice the many families from which we come.  Some families are serious, some quirky, some similar to us, some very different from us.  As we recognize All Saints’ Day, however, we also celebrate that, as believers in Christ, we are members of the same family, the most special of families.  Through water and the Word, each one of us was made a part of this family at Baptism.  As today’s Epistle puts it, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are” (I John 3:1).  As we look at those around us, we remember we are brothers and sisters in Christ.  We also give thanks for those members of the family of God whom we cannot see with our own eyes, those who have died in Christ.

RINGING OF THE BELL

After the ringing of the bell, in silence, we prepare our hearts and minds for worship.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

 CALLING ON GOD

P:  In the name of the Father,

C:  who created us.

P:  In the name of the + Son,

C:  who redeemed us.

P:  In the name of the Holy Spirit,

C:  who sanctifies and keeps us in the one true faith.  Amen.

 OPENING UP TO GOD………..

P:  In today’s Epistle, John writes, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God.”  Yet, we do not live our lives as if we are children of God.

C:  Father in heaven, forgive us for not always living in ways that honor Your name, which we bear as Your baptized children.  You lavishly love us, but we have not shown love for You or for our neighbor.  Because we are by nature sinful and unclean, we set our minds only on the things of this world and not on the world to come.

Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life.  Amen.

 ……….AND RECEIVE GOD’S FORGIVENESS

P:  Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is.  And everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure” (1 John 3:2-3).  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen

 PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  Let us Pray……..Almighty and everlasting God,

C:  You knit together Your faithful people of all times and places into one holy communion, the mystical Body of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

P:  Grant us so to follow Your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that, together with them, we may come to the unspeakable joys You have prepared for those who love You;

C:  through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

  FIRST LESSON:  I John 3:1-3  God loves us and calls us His sons and daughters.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.  The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.  And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

 SECOND LESSON:   Revelation 7:9-17  God promises to wipe every tear away.

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”  And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen!  Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever!  Amen.”

Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?”  I said to him, “Sir, you know.”  And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation.  They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

“Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.  They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.  For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

 CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

GOSPEL:  Matthew 5:1-12  Jesus teaches the Beattitudes.

P:  Seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain, and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him.  And He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:  Blessed are the poor in spirit,

C:  for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

P:  Blessed are those who mourn,

C:  for they shall be comforted.

P:  Blessed are the meek,

C:  for they shall inherit the earth.

P:  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.

C:  for they shall be satisfied.

P:  Blessed are the merciful,

C:  for they shall receive mercy.

P:  Blessed are the pure in heart,

C:  for they shall see God.

P:  Blessed are the peacemakers,

C:  For they shall be called sons of God.

P:  Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,

C:  for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

P:  Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on My account.  Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

SERMON                                                                              An Upside Down World

SERMON HYMN  “Green Book” 174 vs. 1,2,7,8            For All the Saints

For all the saints who from their labors rest

All who by faith before the world confessed,

Your name, O Jesus, be forever blest,

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

You were their rock, their fortress, and their might;

You, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;

You, in the darkness drear, their one true light.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

But then there breaks a yet more glorious day:

The saints triumphant rise in bright array;

The King of glory passes on his way.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,

Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,

Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

APOSTLE’S CREED

C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

          Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

          Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

          Born of the virgin Mary,

          Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

          Was crucified, died and was buried.

          He descended into hell.

          The third day He rose again from the dead.

          He ascended into heaven

          And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

          From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

          The holy Christian Church,

                          The communion of saints,

          The forgiveness of sins,

          The resurrection of the body,

          And the life + everlasting.  Amen

DISTRIBUTION HYMNS

 “Red Book” 14                  Bind Us Together

Bind us together Lord, Bind us together with cords that cannot be broken,

Bind us together Lord, Bind us together

Bind us together with love.

There is only one God.

There is only one King.

There is only one body.

That is why I sing.

Bind us together Lord, Bind us together with cords that cannot be broken,

Bind us together Lord, Bind us together

Bind us together with love.

“Red Book” 222                 The Solid Rock

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness seem to hide His face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

In every high and stormy gale,

My anchor holds within the veil.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.

His oath, His covenant, His blood

Support me in the whelming flood;

When all around my soul gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in Him be found;

Dressed in His righteousness alone,

Faultless to stand before the throne

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.

“Red Book” 106                 It Is Well With My Soul

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,

It is well, it is well with my soul.

It is well (it is well) with my soul, (with my soul)

It is well, it is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, the trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

And hath shed his own blood for my soul.

It is well (it is well) with my soul, (with my soul)

It is well, it is well with my soul.

My sin oh, the bliss of this glorious tho’t:

My sin not in part, but the whole

Is nail’d to the cross and I bear it no more,

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul.

It is well (it is well) with my soul, (with my soul)

It is well, it is well with my soul.

And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,

The clouds be roll’d back as a scroll,

The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,

“Even so,” it is well with my soul.

It is well (it is well) with my soul, (with my soul)

It is well, it is well with my soul.
