AS WE GATHER
The night known in the Church as Maundy or Holy Thursday is filled with significance and holy activity. We are called to remember the great mandate – the New Command – of our Lord Jesus that we are called to love one another and to serve each other, as our Lord demonstrated in washing the feet of the disciples. Our Lord serves us in many ways, most singularly as the Host at His Table, where we receive His Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins. The hymn writer reminds us that an “awe-full” mystery is here. The whole night and our worship as part of it are awesome indeed!
† PREPARATION†
Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
WE CONFESS AND RECEIVE FORGIVENESS
Pastor: In the prayer of our Lord we pray, “Lead us not into temptation.” Yet we know that we do not always withstand the temptations that assail us. We daily sin much and we know our need for forgiveness. In His mercy, God has promised His forgiveness to those who repent and turn to Him, humbly asking for His mercy in Christ Jesus. Let us then make our confession to our God. O almighty God, merciful Father.
People: Almighty God, Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We have turned away from one another in our thinking, speaking, and doing. We have done the evil You forbid and have not done the good You demand. We do repent and are truly sorry for our sins. Have mercy on us, Father, because of the obedience of our brother Jesus, Your Son. Forgive us all that is past and with the power of the Holy Spirit, move us to serve You faithfully. Set our feet upon the new path of life, and build Your kingdom here through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Pastor: God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith. In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Words by Don Besig and Nancy Price Music by Don Besig Incorporating The Old Rugged Cross, Copyright MM by Alfred Publishing Co., Inc.
Sung by the Peace Lutheran Choir on April 6, 2014
We need You, dear Savior to stay at our side,
to grant us the comfort and love You provide.
We know we’re not worthy of all we receive,
but we always will trust and believe.
.
We try to be faithful, we try to be true,
and often we fail You in things that we do.
But when we’re discouraged, alone and afraid,
we remember the price that You paid.
.
On a hill far away there’s an old rugged cross
where You suffered in sorrow and pain.
In the dark of that day, all the world felt the loss,
and our guilt will forever remain.
.
But we think of that old rugged, old rugged cross,
and the way that You died for our sins.
We remember that old rugged, old rugged cross,
and our hope is restored once again.
.
We try to be patient, we try to be strong;
we yield to temptation and things that are wrong.
But, Lord, You have taught us to love and obey,
and our faith will grow ev’ry day.
.
For we know that old rugged cross,
and the way that You died for our sins.
We remember that old rugged, old rugged cross,
and our hope is restored once again, again.
Our hope is restored once again!
Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Pastor: O Lord, in this wondrous Sacrament You have left us a remembrance of Your passion. Grant that we may so receive the sacred mystery of Your body and blood that the fruits of Your redemption may continually be manifest in us; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
† WORD †
OLD TESTAMENT Jeremiah 31:31-34
The Lord promises a new covenant.
31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.
33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
The Lord’s Supper is instituted by Jesus.
Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-second chapter.
People: Glory to You, O Lord.
Pastor: Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John saying,
People: “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.”
Pastor: They said to Him, “Where will You have us prepare it?” He said to them,
People: Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.”
Pastor: And they went and found it, just as He had told them, and they prepared the Passover. And when the hour came He reclined the table, and the apostles with Him. And He said to them,
People: “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
Pastor: And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, he Said,
People: Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
Pastor: And he took bread, and when He had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying,
People: “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Pastor: And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying,
People: “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.”
Pastor: This is the Gospel of our Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”
Text: Charles Wesley, Jr., 1707-1788, Tune: Rowland H. Prichard, 1811-1887
Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down,
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling,
All Thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation,
Enter every trembling heart.
.
Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit
Into ev’ry troubled breast;
Let us all in Thee inherit;
Let us find thy promised rest;
Take away the love of sinning,
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.
.
Come, Almighty to deliver,
Let us all thy life receive;
Suddenly return, and never,
Nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve Thee as Thy hosts above,
Pray, and praise Thee without ceasing,
Glory in Thy perfect love.
.
Finish then Thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see Thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in Thee:
Changed from glory into glory,
Till in heaven we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before Thee,
Lost in wonder, love and praise.

“Setting The Tone”
Pastor Jeremy Lucke
† sacrament †
Pastor: The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22
People: And also with you.
Pastor: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
Pastor: At Your command, Abraham prepared to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice on the mountain; yet, in mercy You provide a ram as a substitute. We give You thanks that on Calvary You spared not Your only Son but sent Him to offer His life as a ransom for many.
As we eat and drink His body and blood, grant us, like Abraham our father, to trust in Your promise now fulfilled in Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
People: Amen.
Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My † body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when he had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My † blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST
Pastor: As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26
People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:20
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen
THE PEACE OF THE LORD
Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
People: Amen.
Pastor: Gracious God, our heavenly Father, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son’s body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all Your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which has no end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
Were you there when
they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when
they crucified my Lord?
Oh, Sometimes it causes me to
tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they
Crucified my Lord?
.
Were you there when they
nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they
nailed him to the tree?
Oh, Sometimes it causes me to
tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they
nailed him to the tree?
.
Were you there when they
laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they
laid him in the tomb?
Oh, Sometimes it causes me to
tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when they
laid him in the tomb?
.
Were you there when God raised
him from the tomb?
Were you there when God raised
him from the tomb?
Oh, Sometimes it causes me to
tremble, tremble, tremble,
Were you there when God raised
him from the tomb?
