THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 15, 2018
PRE-SERVICE MUSIC
AS WE GATHER…We may have a tendency to think of repentance as a painful thing, as something to dread and avoid at all costs. After all, repentance means admitting we were wrong. It may be embarrassment, guilt, shame, or pride that makes repentance difficult. Yet you have probably experienced the joy of repentance as well, the relief of confessing your wrongs, the wonder of grace that flows to us in forgiveness. You may be holding on to a dark secret or a stubborn grudge. Bring your heavy burdens to the Lord today. He has forgiven you and has called you His beloved child.
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.
OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER
P: The disciples on the road to Emmaus did not recognize Jesus after his resurrection. Sometimes we too miss Jesus’ presence in the regular routines of our life. During this moment of silence, we reflect upon our sinful preoccupation of looking at ourselves and our need for God’s forgiveness.
Silent Reflection
P: We confess our sins,
C: Lord, we confess that we have missed noticing Your presence in our lives. When we have received healing, we have forgotten to give You thanks. When we have been set free from difficult circumstances, we have failed to give You credit. When we have received favor and blessing in our life, we have counted it as mere luck…not as a sign of Your providence. Lord, forgive us today and give us hearts that are open to Your presence.
P: Jesus did not leave the disciples without showing them who He was. Jesus shows us each day who he is when he showers us with his love, mercy and forgiveness. Receive that sign of love in the forgiveness of your sins. God forgives you all of your sins, in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE: “You are My All in All”
You are my strength when I am weak,
You are the treasure that I seek.
You are my all in all.
Seeking you as a precious jewel,
Lord, to give up, I’d be a fool,
You are my all in all.
Chorus: Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your Name
Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your Name
Taking my sin, my cross, my shame.
Rising again, I bless Your name.
You are my all in all.
When I fall down, You pick me up.
When I am dry, You fill my cup.
You are my all in all.
Chorus: Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your Name
Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your Name
P: Let us Pray…O God, by the humiliation of your Son you lifted up this fallen world, rescuing us from the hopelessness of death. Grant your faithful people a share in the joys that are eternal; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
God reveals His love for us in that He calls us His children.
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears[a] we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.
CHOIR ANTHEM: Exalted Is the Lord
Arranged by John F. Wilson
Great is the Lord, He is holy and just; by His power we trust in His love.
Great is the Lord, He is faithful and true; by His mercy He proves He is love.
Great is the Lord, and worthy of Glory!
Great is the Lord, and worthy of praise! Great is the Lord!
Now lift up your voice! (Great is the Lord!)
He is exalted, exalted, great is the Lord! (Repeat from the beginning)
He is exalted, the King is exalted on high; I will praise Him.
He is exalted forever exalted and I will praise His name!
He is the Lord; forever His truth shall reign.
Heaven and earth rejoice in His holy name.
He is exalted, the King is exalted on high; I will praise Him!
He is exalted, the King is exalted on high; I will praise His name!
He is the Lord; Forever His truth shall reign!
Heaven and earth rejoice in His Holy name!
He is exalted, exalted, He is exalted, exalted!
He is exalted, the King is exalted on high.
He is exalted (x3), the king is exalted on high!
Great is the Lord! He is exalted!
Jesus encourages the Emmaus disciples to be his special witnesses.
As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[a] and he took it and ate before them.
Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for[b] the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
SERMON HYMN: “We Will Glorify”
- We will glorify the King of Kings;
We will Glorify the Lamb;
We will glorify the Lord of Lords,
Who is the great I Am.
- Hallelujah to the King of Kings;
Hallelujah to the Lamb;
Hallelujah to the Lord of Lords,
Who is the great I Am.
- Lord Jehovah reigns in majesty;
We will bow before his throne;
We will worship Him in righteousness;
We will worship Him alone.
C: I believe in God, who has created all things and continues to create new life within us.
I believe in Jesus, son of God, son of man, the Savior of the world. By His life, His death and resurrection, I can know the true depth of human possibility, and experience the true joy of an abundant life.
I believe the Holy Spirit is present, now and always, calling us to faith, giving us gifts and empowering us for service. I believe that the community of believers called the church can experience the fullness of life through the word, the sacraments, and all that we do.
OFFERING
We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us—ourselves, our time, our possessions.
OFFERTORY
P: Friends in Christ, I urge you all to lift up your hearts to God and pray with me as Christ our Lord has taught us and freely promised to hear us.
God, our Father in heaven, look with mercy on us, Your needy children on earth, and grant us grace that Your holy name be hallowed by us and all the world through the teaching of Your Word and fervent love shown forth in our lives. Graciously turn from us all evil living in which You and Your name are profaned. Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
P: May Your kingdom come to us and expand. We pray that You would increase the number of Christians and that You would use us both in Peace Lutheran Church and in our neighborhoods to expand the kingdom. Lord, in Your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
P: Strengthen us by Your Spirit, not to simply do our own will, but to do Yours. We praise and thank You that Your intentions for us are good. Help us to trust Your will in the times of life that we are tempted to go our own way. We place into Your hands (…) and all those who are in need, praying for them at all times: Thy will be done. Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
P: Lord, we praise You for the unity that we share with others because of Jesus. We pray that You would strengthen First Baptist Church in Philomath and Pastor Clay. We thank you for their efforts to teach and live by Your commands. Bless their efforts to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our community. Lord, in your mercy,
C: hear our prayer.
P: We trust, O Lord, in Your great mercy to hear and answer us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C: Amen.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.

“I Am Trusting You, Lord Jesus”
I am trusting you, Lord Jesus,
Trusting only you;
Trusting you for full salvation,
Free and true.
I am trusting you for pardon;
At your feet I bow,
For your grace and tender mercy
Trusting now.
I am trusting you for cleansing
In the crimson flood;
Trusting you to make me holy
By your blood.
I am trusting you to guide me;
You alone shall lead,
Ev’ry day and hour supplying
All my need.
I am trusting you for power;
You can never fail.
Words which you yourself shall give me
Must prevail.
I am trusting you, Lord Jesus;
Never let me fall.
I am trusting you forever
And for all.
“Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me”
Rock of Ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in thee;
Let the water and the blood, From thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure; Cleanse me from its guilt and pow’r.
Not the labors of my hands Can fulfill thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know, Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone; Thou must save, and thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring; Simply to thy cross I cling.
Naked, come to thee for dress; Helpless, look to thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath, When mine eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown, See thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me. Let me hide myself in thee.
P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.
C: Amen.
CLOSING SONG: “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near,
Joining in glad adoration!
Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things is wondrously reigning
And, as on wings of an eagle, uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen All that is needful has been
Sent by his gracious ordaining?
Praise to the Lord, who will prosper your work and defend you;
Surely his goodness and mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew What the Almighty can do
If with his love he befriend you.
Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen Sound from his people again.
Gladly forever adore him!
P: Go in Peace. Serve the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
