NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
August 11, 2019
AS WE GATHER…Much like He did for Abraham and Sarah, announcing to them that they would have a son, and much like He did for Marth and Mary, teaching them what is ultimately necessary, the Lord enters into your midst today! Jesus is here! Your Savior is in this place, in this service of worship, in this house to feed you with the gifts of His mercy and to serve you with His forgiveness. As we gather together by His Word and Spirit, His service to us will change us as together we receive Him. His saving work will inspire us, once again, to depart in His peace and to serve others in His love.
RINGING OF THE BELL
We take a few moments in silence to prepare our hearts for worship
L: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
L: How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!
C: How beautiful is the good news of Christ’s salvation!
L: The Lord’s voice is reaching out into all the earth!
C: Jesus’ words bring us life as we trust in Him!
L: Let us confess our sins to God our Father, beginning with a time for silent prayer.
In a time of silence, we reflect on our great need for Jesus’ saving work.
L: With confidence in Christ, let us confess our sins to God our Father.
C: Merciful God, You never fail to come to us by Your Word and Spirit. Your Word alone gives life, but we are distracted from receiving and obeying Your Word. In our thinking, speaking, and doing, we have done what Your Word forbids, and we have failed to do what Your Word commands. Thank You for being a wonderful Father and a merciful Savior! Bring us again to the foot of Jesus’ cross that we may receive the forgiveness we so desperately need. Amen.
L: Almighty God, in His great mercy, has given His Son to die for you and, for Jesus’ sake, He forgives you all of your sins. I announce God’s grace to you in this forgiveness—your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
SONG OF PRAISE: “I Love You, Lord” TOSB 225 (2x)
I love You, Lord
and I lift my voice
to worship You
o my soul, rejoice!
Take joy, My King, in what You hear,
may it be a sweet, sweet sound
in Your ear.
SERVICE OF THE WORD
L: Let us Pray. Loving God, by Your Word You call forth everything out of nothing. Grant that we who have been called to new life in Christ Jesus continue to hear and follow where He leads. We pray this through Jesus, Your Son, our Lord.
C: Amen.
God’s promises to Abraham
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Let anxiety be.
And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.
Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you. “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
L: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN: “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High”
Lord, I lift Your name on high,
Lord, I love to sing Your praises.
I’m so glad You’re in my life,
I’m so glad You came to save us.
You came from heaven to earth to show the way,
From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay;
From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky;
Lord, I lift Your Name on high.
Lord, I lift Your name on high,
Lord, I love to sing Your praises.
I’m so glad You’re in my life,
I’m so glad You came to save us.
You came from heaven to earth to show the way,
From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay;
From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky;
Lord, I lift Your Name on high.
SERMON
C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Christian Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life + everlasting. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER
BENEDICTION
CLOSING SONG “The God of Abraham Praise”
The God of Abr’ham praise, Who reigns enthroned above;
Ancient of everlasting days And God of love.
Jehovah, great I AM! By earth and heav’n confessed;
I bow and bless the sacred name Forever blest.
The God of Abr’ham praise, At whose supreme command
From earth I rise and seek the joys At His right hand.
I all on earth forsake, Its wisdom, fame, and pow’r,
And Him my only portion make, My shield and tow’r.
The God of Abr’ham praise, Whose all sufficient grace
Shall guide me all my pilgrim days In all my ways.
He deigns to call me friend; He calls Himself my God.
And He shall save me to the end Through Jesus’ blood.
He by Himself has sworn; I on His oath depend.
I shall, on eagle wings up-borne, To heav’n ascend.
I shall behold His face; I shall His pow’r adore
And sing the wonders of His grace Forever-more.
