Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

AS WE GATHER………………… Living in a world of empty promises and fake offers, we can easily become jaded to the things of God. In our skepticism, the temptation is to treat the invitation of God the same way we meet the scams that fill our emails and text messages. But the Lord does not speak empty words nor does He give promises He will not keep. Faith rejoices in Him who is genuine and who genuinely supplies what we need. Because of this, we build our lives upon the firm ground of his hope.

OPENING SONG             “Shout to the Lord”

Darlene Zschech; © 1993 Wondrous Worship

(Praise Team)

My Jesus, my Savior,

Lord, there is none like You,

All of my days I want to

praise the wonders of Your mighty love.

My Comfort, my Shelter,

Tower of refuge and strength;

Let ev’ry breath, all that I am

Never cease to worship You.

.

Shout to the Lord

All the earth let us sing

Power and majesty

Praise to the King

Mountains bow down

And the seas will roar

At the sound of Your name

.

I sing for joy

At the work of Your hands

Forever I’ll love You

Forever I’ll stand

Nothing compares to the promise

I have in You

(Repeat all)

CALLING ON GOD

Leader:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People:  Amen.

Leader:  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

People:  All those who practice it have a good understanding.

Leader:  I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,

People: in the company of the upright, in the congregation.

Leader: Great are the works of the Lord,

People: Studied by all who delight in them.

Leader: God provides for those who fear Him;

People: He remembers His covenant forever.

Leader: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;

People: All those who practice it have a good understanding.

Parts of Psalm 111 and Proverbs 9

OPENING UP TO GOD………..

Leader:  Wise Old Solomon once wrote, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding.” Too often we rely on the promises that the world offers, and we forget what the Lord has spoken. Too often we are skeptical of what the Lord says, thinking that His promises are empty. We take a moment of silence to recognize the ways in which we haven’t trusted the Lord and His Word. We also look forward to His forgiveness and the renewal His forgiveness brings to trust in the Lord.

~~~~~ Silence for reflection ~~~~~
Leader:  Let us confess together,
People:  Lord we need Your mercy.  In this hour, help us to see our sins and pain and pray for a fresh start.  Help us to see the shortcomings in our lives and look to You for the answers to our problems.  Give us a new vision of what life can be like.  Teach us to hope, to love, to give and to have faith.  Lord, we need Your mercy.
Leader:  In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins.  To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit.  May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
People:  Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Leader:  Let us Pray. Almighty God, whom to know is everlasting life, grant us to know Your Son, Jesus, to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow His steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People:  Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
OLD TESTAMENT READING:           Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
24 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God.
And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods.
14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.
15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods,
17 for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed.
18 And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”
Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
Gospel:                        John 6:51-69
“You have the words of eternal life.”
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.
60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?
62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)
65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.” 66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People:  Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN                “The Old Rugged Cross”
George Bennard, Words: Public Domain, Music: Public Domain
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suff’ring and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
.
Chorus:    So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
.
On that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above,
To bear it to dark Calvary.
Chorus
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see;
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.
Chorus
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true,
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory for ever I’ll share.
Chorus
Nametags at Peace. Do you sometimes find yourself talking to someone all the while trying to remember their name? Peace has something to help with this. When you enter the church, you will notice a board with a nametag for you. It’s magnetic and it won’t damage your clothes. If you would like to, please feel free to find yours and put it on. We would ask that you remove it and return it to the board when you are ready to leave. If you have any questions, please talk to Kay or Janette.
Scam & Fraud Prevention. How many scam calls did you receive just this past week? There are crooks who are continually bombarding us with solicitations and requests to get our personal information, including credit card or bank account numbers. Their methods are always changing, and many are becoming quite sophisticated in their tactics.  The Philomath Rotary Club has rescheduled Ms. Shannon Romero, the Oregon Consumer Education & Engagement Coordinator. Her presentation is titled “Scam & Fraud Prevention” and will be on August 20th at noon in the Fellowship Hall This is a great opportunity to learn some ways to protect our information and our bank accounts.
Lunch will be provided by the Rotary Club for both presentations so please let Lindy know if you will be attending so we can plan the number of meals accordingly.
