Peace Lutheran Church
Ninth Sunday After Pentecost
August 1 and 2, 2020
As We Gather…………… God is gracious and supplies us with all our needs. We will be reminded of this again as we hear about the moment that Jesus provided food for over five thousand people. As we prepare our hearts and our minds for worship, consider saying silently to yourself this prayer:
Lord, I freely admit that everything in me is geared toward making sure I have what I and my loved ones need before I even think of giving anything away, whether resources, time, or effort. And I can see how that can cut me off from experiencing evidence of Your gracious provision. Give me courage and faith to move more toward a lifestyle of generosity. Amen.
OPENING SONG “Lord, the Storms of Life Have Hurt Us”
Lord, the storms of life have hurt us; give us your peace.
Lord, you said you won’t desert us; love shall not cease.
As the future spread before us,
Your strong guidance guarding o’er us,
Now in faith we sing the chorus: give us your peace.
Wrap your arms around us, Jesus: keep us from strife.
Fill us with the truth that frees us; in you is life.
As we deal with pain and sorrow, fix our eyes on your tomorrow,
Where no light you have to borrow; keep us from strife.
In this time of tribulation, grant us your grace.
Lord, provide us with salvation within this place.
In our heart and soul and spirit, your free gift may we inherit.
By your Son’s redeeming merit, grant us your grace.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Moment of Silence
Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
People: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
Pastor: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 55:1-5
Reader: Come, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,
and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God!
Reader: Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live. “The man took Jesus at his word and departed. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.” Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed. This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.
