Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER… When it comes to biblical foods, bread is prominent throughout the pages of Scripture. The first mention of bread is found in Genesis, where it is an indicator of fellowship. Melchizedek (Gns. 14:18) brought out bread and offered it to Abram. As we gather for worship with the breaking of bread in Holy Communion, we remember the ties of fellowship shared between Melchizedek and Abram. Like Melchizedek, Jesus shares all things with us.

OPENING BLESSING

Leader:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

Leader:  Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened unto you.”

People: “For everyone who ask receives, and those who seek find, and to each who knocks it will be opened.”

Leader: God knows our needs before we ask and in our asking prepares us to receive the gift of his grace. Let us open our hearts to God’s healing forgiveness and forsake all that separates us from him and from one another.

~~~~~ A Moment of Silence for Reflection ~~~~~
Leader:  We confess.
People: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus, Maker of all things, we admit and confess our sinfulness. We have turned away from you and from each other in our thoughts, words and actions. We do repent and are truly sorry for our sins. Have mercy on us, kind Father. Forgive us all that is past, renew us with the power of the Holy Spirit, and move us to faithful service in the kingdom of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Leader:  God has promised forgiveness of sins to those who repent and turn to him. May he keep you in his grace by the Holy Spirit, lead you to greater faith and obedience and bring you to live with him forever, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
People:  Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE:                “Oh, How I Love Jesus”
By: Fredrick Whitfield, American Melody © Public Domain
There is a name I love to hear,
I love to sing its worth;
It sounds like music in my ear,
The sweetest name on earth.
O, how I love Jesus, O,
how I love Jesus,
O, how I love Jesus
Because He first loved me!
.
It tells me of a Savior’s love,
Who died to set me free;
It tells me of His precious blood,
The sinner’s perfect plea.
O, how I love Jesus,
O, how I love Jesus,
O, how I love Jesus
Because He first loved me!
.
It tells of One whose loving heart
Can feel my deepest woe,
Who in each sorrow bears a part
That none can bear below.
O, how I love Jesus,
O, how I love Jesus,
O, how I love Jesus
Because He first loved me!
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Old Testament:                Exodus 16:2-15
The Lord promises bread to rain from heaven.
And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness,
and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.
On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord. For what are we, that you grumble against us?”
And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the Lord.”
Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, ‘Come near before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’ ”
10 And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. 11 And the Lord said to Moses,
12 “I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”
13 In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp. 14 And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground.
15 When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.
Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL:               John 6:22-35
Jesus is the true bread sent by His Father in heaven.
22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone.
23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24 So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.
27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ”
32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People:  Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN         “All People That on Earth Do Dwell”
Roger Jones & William Kethe;  © Words: Public Domain Music: 1981 Christian Music Ministries (Admin. by Sovereign Music UK)
All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell;
Come ye before Him and rejoice.
.
Know that the Lord is God indeed:
Without our aid He did us make;
We are His folk, He doth us feed,
And for His sheep He doth us take.
.
Oh, enter then His gates with praise,
Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His name always,
For it is seemly so to do.
WE SHARE OUR FAITH
Leader: We have begun our worship in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit. Let us speak together the words of the Apostles’ Creed regarding the Third Person of the Holy Trinity.
People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Leader: What does this mean?
People: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.
In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.
In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers.
On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ.
OFFERING
We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us—ourselves, our time, our possessions.
OFFERTORY
PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH
Leader: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs, calling upon our gracious God.
Leader: We pray for the church, that God’s people may live confidently and would joyfully share the message of our Lord’s wondrous works and deeds that have brought us salvation. We pray for this gathering at Peace, that we be blessed with all grace in the breaking of bread and give evidence to the fruit of the Spirit in our lives.
~~~~~ Silence ~~~~~

Leader: We pray for families and for those who share in our Christian fellowship. We pray for those with special concerns and needs this day: those who are hospitalized or homebound, those who are grieving at this time, the unemployed and underemployed, the chronically ill, and all those whose needs are known to us. Lord, grant that we may bring Your blessing to situations of need in all places.

~~~~~ Silence ~~~~~
Leader: Merciful God, we thank You for all those faithful people whose words and actions have guided us in the past, especially remembering those no longer with us on earth, who now rejoice in Your eternal presence. Direct us to walk Your servant way throughout our lives until that day when we share in the everlasting feast in Your eternal kingdom.
People: Amen.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen
COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION
DISTRIBUTION HYMNS
“Rock of Ages”
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me Hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
be of Sin the double cure,
save me from its guilt and pow’r.
.
Not the labor of my hands,
can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
.
Nothing in my hands I bring,
simply to Thy cross I cling;
naked, come to Thee for dress,
helpless look to Thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly, wash me.
Savior, or I die.
.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
when my eyes shall close in death,
which I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in Thee.
“Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer”
Text: William Williams, 1717-1791; tr. composite, alt. © Tune: John Hughes, 1873-1932
Guide me ever, great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but you are mighty;
Hold me with your pow’rful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven
Feed me now and ever more,
Feed me now and ever more.
.
Open now the crystal fountain
Where the healing waters flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong deliv’rer, strong deliv’rer,
Shield me with your mighty arm,
Shield me with your mighty arm.
.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs and praises, songs and praises,
I will raise forever more,
I will raise forever more.
CLOSING SONG:                          “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Text: Joachim Neander, 1650-1680; tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1829-1878, alt. Tune: Ernewerten Gesangbuch, Stralsund, 1665; © 1978 by Augsburg Publishing House, Minneapolis and Board of Publication, Lutheran Church in America, Philadelphia
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
the King of creation!
O my soul, Praise Him,
for He is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear,
Now to His temple draw near;
Joining in glad adoration!
.
Praise to the Lord,
who o’er all things is wondrously reigning,
And, as on wings of an eagle,
uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen
All that is needful has been
Sent by His gracious ordaining?
.
Praise to the Lord,
who will prosper your work and defend you;
Surely His goodness and mercy
shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do,
If with His love He befriend you.
.
Praise to the Lord,
Oh let all that is in me adore Him!
All that has life and breath,
come now with praises before Him.
Let the Amen
Sound from His people again,
Gladly forever we adore Him.
