Peace Lutheran Church
We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence. If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher. Everyone is welcome.
The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.
Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.
Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.
There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.
Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

AS WE GATHER………… One of the signs that I’m growing in my Christian faith is that I stop demanding that everyone on the planet serve my every need right now. Thank God James teaches us about patience! Patience is a gift from God that teaches us that God is in control. Let the Lord take control of your life today in worship service. God will work things out!
RINGING OF THE BELL
After the ringing of the bell, we prepare our hearts and minds in silence for today’s worship.
Leader: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
TIME TO REFLECT ON OURSELVES……AND RECEIVE FORGIVENESS
Leader: In today’s second reading, James writes, “Be patient, then, brothers…..See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is. You too, be patient. Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets.” Merciful Father, we confess that we minimize our sin of impatience.
People: And call it being human or completely natural.
Leader: We often overlook it, sweep it under the rug, or dismiss it.
People: But You call impatience a sin.
Leader: Because our short fuses and lack of long-suffering.
People: Damages our children, our spouses and our fellow Christians.
Leader: Waiting for Your perfect timing, O God, sometimes makes us want to scream.
People: Father, all too often, we feel like You’re not moving fast enough.
~~~~~ Silence for Reflection ~~~~~
Leader: Our God is a great God and knows our needs for all areas of our life. The mercy of our merciful Father is higher than the heavens, wider than our wanderings and deeper than all our sin. He is slow to anger and abounding in love and faithfulness. Because of Jesus’ bitter suffering, death on the cross and mighty resurrection you are forgiven, loved and heaven-bound! Let us humble ourselves before the Lord.
People: Amen.
SONG OF PRAISE “Here I Am to Worship”
Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness,
Opened my eyes let me see.
Beauty that made
This heart adore You,
Hope of a life spent with You.
.
So here I am to worship,
Here I am to bow down,
Here I am to say that You’re my God.
And You’re altogether lovely,
Altogether worthy,
Altogether wonderful to me.
.
King of all days
Oh so highly exalted.
Glorious in heaven above.
Humbly You came
To the earth You created,
All for love’s sake became poor.
.
So here I am to worship,
Here I am to bow down,
Here I am to say that You’re my God.
And You’re altogether lovely,
Altogether worthy,
Altogether wonderful to me.
.
And I’ll never know how much it cost,
To see my sin upon that cross.
And I’ll never know how much it cost,
To see my sin upon that cross.
.
So here I am to worship,
Here I am to bow down,
Here I am to say that You’re my God.
And You’re altogether lovely,
Altogether worthy,
Altogether wonderful to me.
Leader: We pray….. Loving Father, the fruit of the Spirit includes patience, and so we plead for You to create in us, by Your Spirit, patient and kind hearts so that all that we say and do reflects Your patience with us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
HEARING FROM GOD’S WORD Practicing Patience
Old Testament Readi Psalm 119:161-169
Reader: Ruler persecute me without cause, but my heart trembles at Your word.
People: I rejoice in Your promise like one who finds great spoil.
Reader: I hate and abhor falsehood but I love Your law.
People: Seven times a day I praise You for Your righteous laws.
Reader: Great peace have they who love Your law, and nothing can make them stumble.
People: I wait for Your salvation, O Lord, and I follow Your commands.
Reader: I obey Your statutes, for I love them greatly.
People: I obey Your precepts and Your statutes, for all my ways are known to You.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
New Testament Reading: James 5:7-11
7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 17:1-9
17 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified.
7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN “Praise to the Lord”
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
the King of creation;
O my soul, praise him for he is thy
health and salvation;
All ye who hear,
Now to his temple draw near,
Joining in glad adoration.
.
Praise to the Lord, who o’er all
things is wondrously reigning,
And, as on wings of an eagle,
uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen all that
is needful has been
Sent by his gracious ordaining?
.
Praise to the Lord, who will
prosper your work and defend you;
Surely his goodness and
mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder a new
What the Almighty can do
If with his love he befriend you.
.
Praise to the Lord!
O let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath
come now with praises before him!
Let the amen
Sound from his people again:
Gladly forever adore him.
SERMON
“Practicing Patience”
Pastor Jeremy Lucke
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
And born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again,
He ascended into heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body
And the life everlasting.
Amen.
We give our offerings as a sign of our lives offered to God.
Leader: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
~~~~~Moment of Silence ~~~~~
Pastor shares petitions and will conclude each petition with, “Lord in Your mercy.” The congregation responds to each petition with the words, “hear our prayer.”
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those
Who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen
“Great is Thy faithfulness,”
O God my Father,
There is no shadow
Of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not,
Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been
Thou forever wilt be.
.
“Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!”
Morning by morning
New mercies I see;
All I have needed
Thy hand hath provided
“Great is Thy faithfulness,”
Lord unto me!
.
Summer and winter,
And springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars
In their courses above,
Join with all nature
In manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness
Mercy and love.
.
“Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!”
Morning by morning
New mercies I see;
All I have needed
Thy hand hath provided
“Great is Thy faithfulness,”
Lord unto me!
.
Pardon for sin
And a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear presence
To cheer and to guide;
Strength for today
And bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine,
With ten thousand beside!
.
“Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!”
Morning by morning
New mercies I see;
All I have needed
Thy hand hath provided
“Great is Thy faithfulness,”
Lord unto me!
“Just a Closer Walk with Thee”
I am weak but Thou art strong;
Jesus keep me from all wrong.
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk let me walk close to Thee.
.
Just a closer walk with thee
Grant it Jesus is my plea.
Daily walking close to Thee
Let it be dear Lord let it be.
.
Through this world of
toil and snares,
If I falter Lord who cares.
Who with me my burden shares,
None but Thee dear Lord,
none but Thee.
.
Just a closer walk with thee
Grant it Jesus is my plea.
Daily walking close to Thee
Let it be dear Lord let it be.
.
When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more.
Guide me gently safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore to Thy shore.
.
Just a closer walk with thee
Grant it Jesus is my plea.
Daily walking close to Thee
Let it be dear Lord let it be.
Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ + and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
People: Amen.
CLOSING SONG “All People That On Earth Do Dwell”
All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell;
Come ye before Him and rejoice.
.
Know that the Lord is God indeed:
Without our aid He did us make;
We are His folk, He doth us feed,
And for His sheep He doth us take.
.
Oh, enter then His gates with praise,
Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His name always,
For it is seemly so to do.
.
For why? The Lord our God is good;
His mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.
.
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
The God whom heav’n and earth adore,
From us and from the angel host
Be praise and glory evermore.
SILENT PRAYER: Lord Jesus, trusting You, I will be patient—with You, myself and with others. Amen.
Leader: Go in peace! Serve the Lord!
People: Thanks be to God!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
ONLINE BIBLE STUDY…………….. Are you desiring a closer walk with Jesus in 2025? Pastor is holding online zoom sessions in the New Year to share how you can walk with Jesus in everyday life. Let him know if you’d like to be a part of the study and he will include you in his list. The six sessions will be on Wednesdays at 10 am and last 45 minutes. This week we’ll be sharing the Grace and Truth matrix. What is the best way to support a friend…a neighbor….a family member? There are certainly different ways to define what support exactly means. We’ll discover this week Jesus’ way of supporting people. Jesus always journeyed with people to the point in which they experienced growth and were thriving. We are at our best when we intentionally focus on mentoring and being mentored. “See you” on Wednesday, February 5 at 10 am.
FELLOWSHIP…………….. We have some mice little friends this winter at Peace. Yes, I said “mice” not “nice.” The Trustees are working on a solution to take care of the mice. In the meantime, it is important that we all limit crumbs and food in the kitchen (and really anywhere else). Evidence of our friends has been discovered in the youth room, kitchen and sacristy areas. Thank you!
COMMUNITY FOOD DRIVE………… Philomath Community Services is organizing a food drive that will benefit the food bank and the PCS Gleaners. We are looking for volunteers to help distribute information tags and bags to the doorknobs of certain areas in Philomath. This would happen on February 22 from 9 am to 11 am. The bags would be picked up on March 1 from 9 am to 11 am. Can you help on either date? The need is great! Please let Pastor know if you could assist by February 14. Thank you!
BLOOD DRIVE……………….. Peace is hosting another Red Cross Blood Drive on Friday, February 14, noon to 5 pm. Consider donating blood–as of Thursday, January 30 there were 11 open slots. Consider sharing a treat. If you do want to share something, it can be dropped off on the counter in the kitchen the day before.
FELLOWSHIP HOST…………… Fellowship is an important time to connect with our Peace family. What helps fellowship run smoothly is having a volunteer or two to host on a particular Sunday. We are in need of hosts for February 9 and February 16. Contact Dan if you have a desire to serve.
Tables of peace. Would you like to get to know the members of the congregation better? Then consider signing up to join with a Tables of Peace group. Each group gets together monthly either at the church or in someone’s home to share a meal and some wonderful conversation. It’s a great way to socialize with your Peace family. The sign-up sheets for February – April are in the hallway between the narthex and the fellowship hall.
NEWSLETTERS……..February Newsletters are available on the table in the narthex. They will be mailed and emailed out, as well.
