Peace Lutheran Church
We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence. If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher. Everyone is welcome.
The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.
Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.
Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.
There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.
Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

AS WE GATHER: The miracle of water turned into wine is a surprising one. It is marked by the fact that this is the choicest of wines, that the sheer amount of wine was embarrassingly extravagant, and that the full benefit of this miracle was limited to the servants who did what Jesus said, Mary, and the disciples who were with Jesus. It is the mark of what is to come. Jesus’ whole ministry is one of goodness beyond compare, of extravagant mercy beyond what we deserve or even dare ask, and of grace hidden in ordinary things like words, water, bread, and wine. This is then a precursor of what is to come, the first of many manifestations of His mercy and the rich and overflowing provision of His grace to supply salvation to a world that otherwise knows no joy.
RINGING OF THE BELL
After the ringing of the bell, we prepare our hearts and minds in silence for today’s worship.
OPENING HYMN “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”
Come, thou fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
While the hope of endless glory
fills my heart with joy and love,
Teach me ever to adore Thee,
may I still thy goodness prove.
.
Here I raise my Ebenezer,
hither by thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.
.
O to grace how great a debtor,
daily I’m constrained to be;
Let that grace now like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.
Leader: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Leader: O Lord, You have searched and known us.
People: You discern our thoughts from afar.
Leader: Where shall we go from Your Spirit?
People: Or where shall we flee from Your presence?
Leader: If we ascend to heaven, You are there!
People: If we make our bed in Sheol, You are there!
Leader: Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.
People: We were brought with a price, the blood of Christ.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
Leader: Indeed, we were bought with the precious blood of Christ, and God calls on us to glorify God with our bodies, but we have failed to do this. We have lived as if our bodies and lives were our own, as if Your Son had not bought them with His blood. Such sins cause a deep separation with You, yet even now, our heavenly Father invites us to come to Him and ask for forgiveness.
— Silence for reflection—
Leader: Heavenly Father,
People: we have sinned by the things we have done and by the things we have left undone. Forgive us, remove the shame that clings to us, and make us new creations for the sake of Jesus. Amen.
Leader: Almighty God, in His infinite mercy and grace, sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. In His resurrection, He removes our guilt and makes us more than conquerors. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen. We are forgiven in Christ.
PRAISE SONG “The Church’s One Foundation”
vs. 1 only
The Church’s one foundation
Is Jesus Christ her Lord;
She is his new creation
By water and the word
From heaven he came and sought her
To be his holy bride
With his own blood he bought her
And for her life he died.
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth. Mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5
“God rejoices over us”
62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch.
2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give.
3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God.
4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married.
5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.
Epistle: I Corinthians 12:1-11
God is glorified in our many spiritual gifts
12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.
3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
The first miracle of Jesus at Cana of Galilee
2 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.
3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”
4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.
9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom
10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”
11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN “Songs of Thankfulness and Praise”
Songs of thankfulness and praise,
Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise,
Manifested by the star
To the sages from afar;
Branch of royal David’s stem
In thy birth at Bethlehem;
Anthems be to thee addressed,
God in flesh made manifest.
.
Manifest at Jordan’s stream,
Prophet, Priest, and King supreme;
And at Cana, wedding-guest,
In thy God-head manifest;
Manifest in power divine,
Changing water into wine;
Anthems be to thee addressed,
God in flesh made manifest.
.
Manifest in making whole
Palsied limbs and fainting soul;
Manifest in valiant fight,
Quelling all the devil’s might;
Manifest in gracious will,
Ever bringing good from ill;
Anthems be to thee addressed,
God in flesh made manifest.
.
Grant us grace to see thee, Lord,
Present in they holy Word;
Grace to imitate thee now
And be pure, as pure art thou;
That we might become like thee
At thy great epiphany,
And may praise thee, ever blest,
God in flesh made manifest.
SERMON
“God’s Extravagance.” … from John 2:11.
Pastor Paul Doellinger
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
And born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again,
He ascended into heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body
And the life everlasting. Amen.
We give our offerings as a sign of our lives given to the Lord in humble service.
(Based on 2 Corinthians 6:16: “For we are a temple of the living God.”)
Leader: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
Leader: Holy Spirit, from sin and sorrow set us free;
People: may we Your living temples be.
Leader: Spirit, inspire all people as they serve in their vocations. Grant them creativity, wisdom, discernment, and courage to follow where You lead. From sin and sorrow set us free;
People: may we Your living temples be.
Leader: Spirit, You are the Comforter sent from heaven. Bring Your comfort to all those who are suffering in grief. Point them to the hope of the resurrection to eternal peace and life with Jesus. From sin and sorrow set us free:
People: may we Your living temples be.
Leader: Spirit, strengthen all those who struggle with addictions. Break their bondage, lead them to get the help they need, and remind them that You dwell within them. From sin and sorrow set us free;
People: may we Your living temples be.
Leader: Spirit, look with favor upon all who are sick, injured, and recovering, (especially………..). Have mercy upon them, and heal them according to Your good and gracious will. From sin and sorrow set us free;
People: may we Your living temples be.
Leader: Spirit, we commend all these things to Your infinite wisdom and guiding, for You live and reign with the Father and the Son, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
Leader: Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth. In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son, that all those who believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus. Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper.
People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
Leader: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: “Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those
Who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen
“What a Friend We Have in Jesus”
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer
O what peace we often forfeit
O what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer
.
Have we trials and temptations
Is there trouble anywhere
We should never be discouraged
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer
.
Are we weak and heavy laden
Cumbered with a load of care
Precious Savior still our refuge
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Do your friends despise, forsake you
Take it to the Lord in prayer
In His arms He’ll take and shield you
You will find a solace there
“Rock of Ages”
Rock of Ages cleft for me
Let me hide myself in thee
Let the water and the blood
From thy riven
side which flowed
Be of sin the double cure
Save me from its guilt and pow’r
Leader: Let us pray. O Lord, as once Your Son brought gladness to Cana of Galilee by His presence and the first of His miracles, continue to grant us the gladness of Your presence that we may rejoice in the manifold gifts of Your mercy by which we have been saved, and be brought to the marriage feast on high without end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
Leader: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give + you peace.
People: Amen.
CLOSING HYMN “Now Thank We All our God”
Now thank we all our God
With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom his world rejoices;
Who, from our mothers’ arms,
Has blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.
.
Oh, may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us,
And keep us in his grace,
And guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all harm
In this world and the next.
.
All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and him who reigns
With them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God,
Whom earth and heav’n adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.
Leader: Go in peace! Serve the Lord!
People: Thanks be to God!
