Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER……….. Unity is elusive. Unity depends not on us but on the sacrifice of Christ for us. Today’s readings help us move closer toward recognizing that unity. To fill Judas’ spot, instead of taking a vote, the disciples asked God to decide. In our Gospel Reading we hear Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer in which he prays for unity for us. There are more and more issues that can pull us apart. Today we pause to pray and understand how important unity is for us as the Body of Christ.

RINGING OF THE BELL……..After the ringing of the bell we take a moment in silence to prepare our hearts and minds for today’s worship

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

First Lesson                     Acts 1:12-26

A new witness to Jesus’ resurrection

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,   “ ‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and   “ ‘Let another take his office.’ 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”

26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People:  Thanks be to God.

Holy GOSPEL:                              John 17:1-11

Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer

17 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Unity

1. It might be a misunderstanding!!

2. Are you willing to sacrifice ambition for the sake of unity?

3. Count on Jesus’ gift of eternal life to unify!

SHARING OUR FAITH

People:  I have faith in God, in response to overwhelming love.  I believe that God created me and all that I have, and has given to me gifts beyond measure.

I have faith in Jesus, who emptied Himself out of His love for me.  I believe that Christ died on a cross for my sin, conquered death and the power of evil, and was raised to life on the third day.  His death is mine, His resurrection is mine, new life is mine because of Jesus’ words and work.

I believe that the Holy Spirit in response to overwhelming love.  I believe that the Holy Spirit is present here among us and lives within each person.  The Spirit continues to call people by the Gospel, and creates and builds the church of Christ.  Through the power of the Spirit I have power to stand in strength and against all adversity.

I believe that Jesus is preparing a place for me and will come again to take each of us to be with Him.  Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom,

And the power, and the glory,

Forever and ever.  Amen

Bind us together Lord,

Bind us together with cords

that cannot be broken,

Bind us together Lord,

Bind us together

Bind us together with love.

.

There is only one God.

There is only one King.

There is only one body.

That is why I sing.

.

Bind us together Lord,

Bind us together with cords

that cannot be broken,

Bind us together Lord,

Bind us together

Bind us together with love.

“People Need the Lord”

By: Greg Nelson & Phill McHugh Arr. by Henry Wiens; © 1983 River Oaks Music Co. (Tree Group)/Shepherd’s Fold Music.

Every day they pass me by,

I can see it in their eye;

Empty people filled with care,

headed who knows where.

On they go through private pain,

living fear to fear.

Laughter hides the silent cries

only Jesus hears.

.

People need the Lord.

People need the Lord.

At the end of broken dreams

He’s the open door.

People need the Lord.

People need the Lord.

When will we realize

people need the Lord.

.

We are called to take His light to a world

where wrong seems right;

What could be too great a cost for sharing life

with one who’s lost.

Through His love our hearts can feel

all the grief they bear.

They must hear the words of life

only we can share.

.

People need the Lord.

People need the Lord.

At the end of broken dreams

He’s the open door.

People need the Lord.

People need the Lord.

When will we realize

people need the Lord.

Prayer for Jackson Holroyd

CLOSING SONG              “For All the Saints”

Text: William H. How, 1823-1897, alt. Tune: RVaughn Williams, 1872-1958; ©1978 published by Augsburg Publishing House, Minneapolis & Board of Publication, Lutheran Church in America, Philadelphia

For all the saints who

 from their labors rest,

All who by faith before

the world confessed,

Your name, O Jesus,

be forever blest.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

.

You were their rock,

their fortress, and their might;

You, Lord, their captain in

the well-fought fight;

You, in the darkness drear,

their one true light.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

.

Oh, blest communion,

fellowship divine,

We feebly struggle,

they in glory shine;

Yet all are one within

your great design.

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

.

From earth’s wide bounds,

from ocean’s farthest coast,

Through gates of pearl streams

in the countless host,

Singing to Father, Son,

and Holy Ghost:

Alleluia!  Alleluia!

Dismissal

Leader:  Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

People:  Thanks be to God!

ADULT BIBLE CLASS FOR SUMMER…………… Yes, the adults (and really all ages!) are having Bible Class through the summer. All are welcome! We will begin our summer lessons next Sunday, June 8th. CHRISTIAN CAREGIVING………… Pastor Lucke is offering a Christian Caregiving Skill building via zoom. All are welcome to attend. The final session will be this Wednesday, June 4 at 10 am. The session won’t go any longer than 40 minutes. It is certainly good to seek professional counseling services for serious concerns (ie. serious mental or emotional disturbance, severe depression, etc.). There are ,however, some ways in which Christians can support others who are experiencing common life crises: death of a loved one, financial problems, feeling guilty, separation from a loved one. Pastor Lucke’s session will address how to caregive in these instances. See him if you would like to attend so that you can receive the email link.

NEW MEMBER CLASS…………… Pastor Lucke will be offering a new member class in the month of June. RSVP to him so that date and time can be best determined. This is an opportunity to discover what it means to be Lutheran, what values Peace holds dear, and how a person can find a place to belong and serve in the church family.
