Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health and safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer, and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors. Offerings may be placed in the plates by the doors as we exit the sanctuary.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER…………………. When Jesus was calling disciples, He had to warn them (and us!) that some of their own family members would actively oppose their following the Lord. We will hear about that today in our Gospel reading from Matthew 10. In the same moment, Jesus encouraged His disciples that if they followed Him, they would gain reward. Today we recognize the Peace Lutheran confirmands. We hear from them about how important their faith is. We hear too our Lord’s sure and certain promises to them. It is our prayer that they live for Jesus’ reward above all other things!

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

Leader: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

Leader: As Christians, we do not make the claim that we know everything that there is to know about God. Much of who God is and why God acts is a mystery. One aspect of God that we do know, however, is that God is loving, merciful and forgiving. Each week we celebrate this known attribute of God by confessing our sin and receiving God’s forgiveness. Today is no different. Let us take a few moments of silence to reflect upon our need for God’s forgiveness.

~~~~~ Silent Reflection ~~~~~
Leader: We confess.
People: Lord, forgive us today for our arrogant ways. We think that we can live life without You and Your grace. We have lived as if You did not matter and as if we mattered the most. Let Your amazing love have its way with us today. Strengthen our faith through this forgiveness; we want to do better.
Leader: God is merciful. God never fails to help those who call upon Him in faith. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, our sin is no longer a weight that holds us down. We are free to live in victory, free from the sin of our self-deceit. Praise God for His goodness.
People: Amen.
PRAISE SONG           “Lord, I Need You”
Lord, I come, I confess;
Bowing here I find my rest.
Without You I fall apart;
You’re the one that guides my heart.
.
Lord, I need You, oh I need You;
Ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness;
Oh God how I need You.
.
Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are.
Where You are Lord I am free;
Holiness is Christ in me.
.
Lord, I need You, oh I need You;
Ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness;
Oh God how I need You.
.
So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way.
When I cannot stand, I’ll fall on You.
Jesus You’re my hope and stay.
.
Lord, I need You, oh, I need You;
Ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness;
Oh, God, how I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness;
Oh, God, how I need You.
RITE OF CONFIRMATION
Leader: Beloved in the Lord, our Lord Jesus said to His apostles: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” You have been baptized and trained in the Christian faith. Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before men, I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” Lift up your hearts, therefore, to the God of all grace and joyfully give answer to what I now ask you in the name of the Lord.
Leader: Do you this day in the presence of God and of this congregation acknowledge the gifts that God gave you in your baptism?
Confirmands: Yes, I do.
Leader: Do you renounce the devil, all his works, and all his ways?
Confirmands: Yes, I do.
Leader: Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth?
Confirmands: Yes, I do.
Leader: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From then He will come to judge the living and the dead.
Confirmands: Yes, I do.
Leader: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?
Confirmands: Yes, I do.
Leader: Do you hold all the Scriptures to be the inspired Word of God?
Confirmands: Yes, I do.
Leader: Do you intend to hear the Word of God and receive the Lord’s Supper faithfully?
Confirmands: I do, by the grace of God.
Leader: Do you intend to live according to the Word of God, and in faith, word and deed to remain true to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, even to death?
Confirmands: I do, by the grace of God.
Leader: We rejoice with thankful hearts that you have been baptized and have received the teaching of the Lord. You have confessed the faith and been absolved of your sins. As you continue to hear the Lord’s Word and receive His blessed Sacrament, He who has begun a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
ALL: Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Leader:          Let us pray.
Almighty and eternal God, Your Son, Jesus, calls us as His people and invites us to feast at His Table. Grant us grace always to respond to His call and to find our greatest joy in being at the Lord’s Table. This we ask through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People:         Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Old Testament Lesson           Hosea 5:15-6:6
The Lord desires that His people share mercy.
15  I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress earnestly seek me.
“Come, let us return to the Lord; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up.
  After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him.
  Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn;   he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.”
  What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah?   Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes early away.
  Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment goes forth as the light.
  For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God!
Gospel Lesson              Matthew 9:9-13
Jesus calls Matthew as a disciple.
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.
11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.
HYMN OF THE DAY        “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”
Thomas Obediah Chisholm; William Marion Runyan; Words: Public Domain ; Music: Public Domain
“Great is Thy faithfulness,”
O God my Father,
There is no shadow
Of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not,
Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been
Thou forever wilt be.
Chorus:    “Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!”
Morning by morning
New mercies I see;
All I have needed
Thy hand hath provided
“Great is Thy faithfulness,”
Lord unto me!
Summer and winter,
And springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars
In their courses above,
Join with all nature
In manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness
Mercy and love.
Chorus
Pardon for sin
And a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear presence
To cheer and to guide;
Strength for today
And bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine,
With ten thousand beside!
A small mistake…..
Choir Anthem         “Hold Onto The Rock”
You’ve got to hold on to the Rock of Ages,
Hold on to the Cornerstone.
Stand strong on the sure foundation,
surrounded by the Fortress strong.
When all the storms of life are raging,
hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,
hold on to the Rock!”
..
You’ve got to hold on to the Rock of Ages,
Hold on to the Cornerstone.
Stand strong on the sure foundation,
surrounded by the Fortress strong.
When all the storms of life are raging,
hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,
hold on to the Rock!”
.
You know that it doesn’t take
a mighty earthquake
to shake the ground you stand on!
‘Cause life can change, like a hurricane
and blow all the plans you planned on.
Well, the ground is gonna shake
and the wind is gonna blow.
Who you gonna trust
and where you gonna go?
.
You’ve got to hold on to the Rock of Ages,
Hold on to the Cornerstone.
Stand strong on the sure foundation,
surrounded by the Fortress strong.
When all the storms of life are raging,
hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,
hold on to the Rock!”
.
You know sometimes when life is easy,
It’s so easy to keep the faith,
To be grateful for ev’ry blessing,
when ev’ry blessing comes our way.
But when life shakes us to our very soul,
Who gonna trust and where you gonna go?
.
You’ve got to hold on to the Rock of Ages,
Hold on to the Cornerstone.
Stand strong on the sure foundation,
surrounded by the Fortress strong.
When all the storms of life are raging,
hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on,
hold on to the Rock!”
.
You’ve got to hold on to the Rock
You’ve got to hold on to the Rock
Hold on to the Rock!
PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH
Leader: Let us pray.
Leader: Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank and praise You for Your great goodness in bringing these youth–Your sons and daughters–to the knowledge of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus, and enabling them both with the heart to believe and with the mouth to confess His saving name. Grant that, bringing forth the fruits of faith, they may continue steadfast and victorious to the day when all who have fought the good fight of faith shall receive the crown of righteousness. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: Heavenly Father, many in this world have rejected Your Son and His grace. Soften their hearts, Lord, that they hear You and receive You with joy and gladness. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: Lord, raise up faithful leaders who are committed to liberty and justice. Oppose all those who would use others for their own ambition and pride. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: Lord, give hope to all those who are isolated and lonely. Bring them into the presence of the loving community of Your Church that they find help, hope and freedom among Your people. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: hear our prayer.
Leader: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
People: Amen.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen
Chorus:                           Do Lord, O do, Lord,
O do remember me!
Do Lord, O do, Lord,
O do remember me!
Do Lord, O do, Lord,
O do remember me!
Look away beyond the blue.
You’re my light and my salvation,
I won’t be afraid!
You’re the stronghold of my life,
by You all things were made.
Foes attack me, hassle me,
but I will never fade,
For I move in the
strength of the Lord.
Chorus
Though a host encamp against me,
I will never fear!
Even though a war surrounds me,
You are always near.
One thing I have asked of you
that I will seek for sure
Is to live in the
house of the Lord.
Chorus
You will hide me in Your shelter
in the day of strife;
You’ll conceal me in Your tent
or set me on the height.
Now my head is lifted up above
the storms of night,
So I’ll sing to the
name of the Lord.
Chorus
Glory be to God the Father
and to God the Son;
Glory be to God the Spirit,
ever Three in one.
As it was in the beginning,
