SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

June 2, 2019

AS WE GATHER…Unity is a hard concept to achieve in today’s world—even in the church!  It is, however, what our Heavenly Father desires of us.  Right before going to the cross, Jesus prays that those who believe in Him—past, present, future—may be one.  This was Jesus prayer for the Twelve (see John 17).  This is also Jesus’ prayer for us.  Be strengthened today to seek unity with your brothers and sisters in Christ.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

P:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen!

P:  Alleluia!  Christ is risen!

C: Christ is risen indeed!  Alleluia!

WE CONFESS OUR SINS…

P:  Gracious Father, You daily bless us with mercy, yet we still go astray.  So we confess our sin to You.

A time of silence is observed.

C: We have sinned against You, mighty God, in thought, word and deed.

P:  We have acted in selfish ways that betray the love for our neighbors You desire.

C: We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed.

P:  We have spoken hurtful words that betray the life and healing that You freely give us in Christ.

C: We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed.

P:  We have said and done things that betray the oneness in Christ that You have given to Your people as a gift.

C: Forgive us.  Restore us.  Bring new life to us.

…AND RECEIVE GOD’S FORGIVENESS

P:  Jesus prayed that the love with which the Father has loved Him would be in us and that we would dwell under the shadow of His wings.  Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins.  As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen!

SONG OF PRAISE: “Shout to the Lord”                    (From the Song Box)

My Jesus, my Savior

Lord there is none like You

All of my days, I want to praise

The wonders of Your mighty love

My comfort, my shelter

Tower of refuge and strength

Let every breath, all that I am

Never cease to worship You

Shout to the Lord

All the earth let us sing

Power and majesty praise to the king

Mountains bow down

and the seas will roar

At the sound of Your name

I’ll sing for joy at the

work of  Your hands

Forever I’ll love You, forever I’ll stand

Nothing compares to the

promise I have in You.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

First Lesson:          Acts 1:12-26

The disciples gather in Jerusalem, devoting themselves to prayer.

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) “For it is written in the Book of Psalms, “‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’;and “‘Let another take his office.’ So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us–one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

CHOIR ANTHEM: “I Will Sing Praise”                       By Joseph M. Martin

I will sing praise to the Lord, my God,

Lift up my voice in the sanctuary.

I will sing praise to the Lord, my God;

I will sing Alleluia and praise his holy name.

I will sing praise to the Lord, my God;

Lift up my voice in the sanctuary.

I will sing praise to the Lord, my God;

I will sing Alleluia, and praise his holy name.

Sing the glory of his name;

I will praise his name forever,

Oh, the name above all names.

I will sing praise to him, give all my life to him;

Oh, the glory of his name

(I will sing praise to)

The glory of his name!

Sing Alleluia, all heavens rejoice!

Sing Alleluia, lift high your voice,

Sing Alleluia and make a joyful noise,

joyful noise.

Oh I will sing praise to the Lord, my God,

Lift up my voice in the sanctuary.

I will sing praise to the Lord my God;

I will sing Alleluia,

and praise his holy name.

Praise his name.  Praise his name!

GOSPEL:               John 17:20-26

That all believers may be one

     “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

SERMON HYMN: “The Church’s One Foundation” LBW 369 (vs. 1-4)

The Church’s One Foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;

She is his new creation By water and the Word.

From heav’n he came and sought her To be his holy bride;

With his own blood he bought her, And for her life he died.

Elect from ev’ry nation, Yet one o’er all the earth;

Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth,

One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses with ev’ry grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder This world sees her oppressed,

By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed,

Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up: “How Long?”

And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song.

Through toil and tribulation And tumult of her war,

She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore;

Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest

And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest.

APOSTLES’ CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

             Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

             He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

                     And was born of the virgin Mary.

             He suffered under Pontius Pilate.

                     Was crucified, died, and was buried.

             He descended into hell.

             On the third day he rose again.

             He ascended into heaven,

                     And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

             He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

             The holy Christian Church,

             The communion of saints,

             The forgiveness of sins,

             The resurrection of the body,

             And the life everlasting.  Amen.

OFFERING

We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us—ourselves, our time, our possessions.

OFFERTORY

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P:  Let us pray together in Christ Jesus for all people according to their needs.

P:  For Christians throughout the world, that our divisions decrease and our sense of oneness in Christ increase, O Lord,

C: make us one.

P:  For the president, for congress, for our governor and elected officials, that all work for the common good, O Lord.

C: make us one.

P:  That this nation so divided along political lines would repent of our hatred of those who differ from us; and, based on our one common humanity, discuss our differences with reason and kindness, O Lord,

C: make us one.

P:  For those in need in our community—the sick, those facing surgery, those with terminal illness—that with one voice we speak God’s ever-present love for them with our visits and prayers, O Lord,

C: make us one.

P:  As You blessed the disciples gathered in Jerusalem awaiting the promised Spirit, so bless us by hearing our prayers as we await the coming of Jesus, the beginning and the end—in whose name we pray today.

C: Amen.

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not,

As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness mercy and love.

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!”

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

“Freely, Freely”                 TOSB 47

God forgave my sin in Jesus’ name,

I’ve been born again in Jesus’ name;

And in Jesus’ name I come to you

To share His love as He told me to.

He said, “Freely, freely you have received:

Freely, freely give.

Go in my name, and because you believe,

Others will know that I live.”

All pow’r is giv’n in Jesus’ name,

In earth and heav’n in Jesus’ name

And in Jesus’ name I come to you

CLOSING SONG: “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee”                  LBW 551

Joyful, joyful we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love!

Hearts unfold like flow’rs before thee, Praising thee, their sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the gloom of doubt away.

Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day.

All thy works with joy surround thee, Earth and heav’n reflect thy rays,

Stars and angels sing around thee, Center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,

Chanting bird, and flowing fountain Call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest,

Wellspring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our brother, All who live in love are thine;

Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the joy divine!
