FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

June 24, 2018

AS WE GATHER… Wind.  Storm.  Waves.  This describes what Jesus’ disciples experienced on the Sea of Galilee, and they thought that they were perishing!  Can you relate?  Perhaps you have felt the bluster of sickness of the storm of financial crisis or the waves of anxiety and worry.  In the storms of life, know that the same Savior who was with His followers in the tempest on Galilee is with you today.  The one who brought peace with His Word still gives peace to us.

RINGING OF THE BELL

After the ringing of the bell, in silence we prepare our hearts and minds for today’s worship.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

INVOCATION

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

OPENING HYMN: “Holy Spirit, Truth Divine”

Holy Spirit, truth divine,

Dawn upon this soul of mine;

Word of God and inward light,

Wake my spirit, clear my sight.

Holy Spirit, peace divine,

Still this restless heart of mine;

Speak to calm this tossing sea,

Stayed in your tranquility.

Holy Spirit, right divine,

King within my conscience reign;

Be my guide, and I shall be

Firmly bound, forever free.

OPENING WORDS                                 Ps. 84:10; 25:4; John 17:17

P:  This is the day which the Lord has made;

C: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

P: From the rising of the sun to its setting,

C: the name of the Lord is to be praised.

P: Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere;

C: I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

P:  Make me to know Your ways, O Lord.

C: Teach me Your paths.

P:  Sanctify us in Your truth.

C: Your Word is truth.

P:  From the rising of the sun to its setting,

C: the name of the Lord is to be praised.

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

P:  “Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”  Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, let us consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition.  Together as His people, we take refuge in the infinite mercy of God our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, by saying:  God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life.  Amen.

Silence for reflection

P:  “Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”  Upon this, your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you; and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE: “Freely, Freely”

God forgave my sin in Jesus’ name,

I’ve been born again in Jesus’ name;

And in Jesus’ name I come to you

To share His love as He told me to.

He said, “Freely, freely you have received:

Freely, freely give.

Go in my name, and because you believe,

Others will know that I live.”

All pow’r is giv’n in Jesus’ name,

In earth and heav’n in Jesus’ name

And in Jesus’ name I come to you

To share His pow’r as He told me to.

He said, “Freely, freely you have received:

Freely, freely give.

Go in my name, and because you believe,

Others will know that I live.”

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  Let us pray…Almighty God, Your Son calmed the wind and waves by His Word;

C: through that same Word, grant us Your peace;

P:  through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

 Old Testament:                                                       Job 38:1-11

The Lord answers Job out of the whirlwind.

 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Dress for action like a man;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

“Or who shut in the sea with doors
when it burst out from the womb,
when I made clouds its garment
and thick darkness its swaddling band,
and prescribed limits for it
and set bars and doors,
and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther,
and here shall your proud waves be stayed’?

Epistle:                                                      2 Corinthians 6:1-13

Having nothing, yet possessing everything

Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says,

“In a favorable time I listened to you,

and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.

We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide open. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. In return (I speak as to children) widen your hearts also.

 CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

GOSPEL:                                                                  Mark 4:35-41

       Jesus calms the storm.

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

APOSTLES’ CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

              Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

              He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

                     And was born of the virgin Mary.

              He suffered under Pontius Pilate.

                     Was crucified, died, and was buried.

              He descended into hell.

              On the third day he rose again.

              He ascended into heaven,

                     And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

              He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

              The holy Christian Church,

              The communion of saints,

              The forgiveness of sins,

              The resurrection of the body,

              And the life everlasting.  Amen.

HYMN: “Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me”                                        LBW 334

Jesus, Savior, pilot me

Over life’s tempestuous sea;

Unknown waves before me roll,

Hiding rock and treacherous shoal;

Chart and compass come from thee

Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

As a mother stills her child,

Thou canst hush the ocean wild;

Boist’rous waves obey thy will

When thou say’st to them:  “Be still.”

Wondrous sov’reign of the sea,

Jesus, Savior, pilot me.

When at last I near the shore,

And the fearful breakers roar

Twixt me and the peaceful rest,

Then, while leaning on thy breast,

May I hear thee say to me:

“Fear not, I will pilot thee.”
