THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

June 30, 2019

AS WE GATHER…When people are confronted by the claims of Jesus, they sometimes reject Him. We see this in today’s Gospel as an entire Samaritan village rejects Jesus. The cost of following Jesus is high. We see Jesus set His face to go to Jerusalem, to go toward suffering death. As we follow Jesus, we must be aware that suffering and death may be where Jesus chooses to lead us. Following Jesus means denying ourselves, picking up our cross daily, and going where Jesus leads. This is a good reminder especially today as Nicholas and Ingrid are confirmed. May we each commit ourselves to the challenging task of following Jesus!

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

P:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

P:  As Christians, we do not make the claim that we know everything that there is to know about God.  Much of who God is and why God acts is a mystery.  One aspect of God that we do know, however, is that God is loving, merciful and forgiving.  Each week we celebrate this known attribute of God by confessing our sin and receiving God’s forgiveness.  Today is no different.  Let us take a few moments of silence to reflect upon our need for God’s forgiveness.

Silent Reflection

C: Lord, forgive us today for our arrogant ways.  We think that we can live life without You and Your grace.  We have lived as if You did not matter and as if we mattered the most.  Let Your amazing love have its way with us today.  Strengthen our faith through this forgiveness; we want to do better.

P: God is merciful.  God never fails to help those who call upon Him in faith.  Through this gift of the forgiveness of sins, you also receive the assurance that God is near.  In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I announce God’s goodness to you.  Your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE: “Christ Be My Leader”

Christ be my leader by night as by day;

Safe through the darkness,

for He is the way.

Gladly I follow, my future His care;

Darkness is daylight when Jesus is there.

Christ be my teacher in age as in youth,

Drifting or doubting, for He is the truth.

Grant me to trust Him;

Though shifting as sand,

Doubt cannot daunt me; in Jesus I stand.

Christ be my savior in calm as in strife;

Death cannot hold me, for He is the life.

Nor darkness not doubting nor sin and its stain

Can touch my salvation: with Jesus I reign.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  Let us Pray.  Almighty God, our refuge, our fortress, our God in whom we trust, hear our prayers this day.

C: As You have done for Your people throughout the centuries, defend us from persecution, stand with us in our struggles, give us strength to stand firm in the face of fear and uncertainty, and raise us up with Your mighty right hand.

P:  Lead us by Your Spirit in these days as we share Your name in all

circumstances and as we live our lives as Your chosen people.

C: For You live and reign as one God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – now and forever.  Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

Old Testament:                                                               I Kings 19:9b-21

God reassures Elijah and sends him back to his people.

There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” And the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and cast his cloak upon him. And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” And he returned from following him and took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

GOSPEL:                                                                              Luke 9:51-62

        Following Jesus is costly

When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village.

As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

APOSTLES’ CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

             Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

             He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

                     And was born of the virgin Mary.

             He suffered under Pontius Pilate.

                     Was crucified, died, and was buried.

             He descended into hell.

             On the third day he rose again.

             He ascended into heaven,

                     And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

             He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

             The holy Christian Church,

             The communion of saints,

             The forgiveness of sins,

             The resurrection of the body,

             And the life everlasting.  Amen.

SERMON

HYMN: “In Christ Alone”

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song;

This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!

My Comforter, my All in All,

Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This gift of love and righteousness,

Scorned by the ones He came to save:

Till on the cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied

For every sin on Him was laid;

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,

Light of the world by darkness slain:

Then bursting forth in glorious Day

Up from the grave He rose again!

And as He stands in victory

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,

For I am His and He is mine

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,

This is the power of Christ in me’

From life’s first cry to final breath,

Jesus commands my destiny.

No power of hell, no scheme of man,

Can ever pluck me from His hand;

Till he returns or calls me home,

Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

Bring them into the presence of the loving community of Your Church that they find help, hope and freedom among Your people.  Today we especially uplift the fellowship at New Life Church in Philomath. CLOSING HYMN: “How Firm a Foundation”                        LBW 507

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,

 is laid for your faith in God’s excellent Word!

 What more can be said than to you God hath said,

 to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,

 for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;

 I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,

 upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,

 my grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;

 the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design

 thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

Through out all their life time my people shall prove

My sovereign eternal , unchangeable love;

Amd then, when gray hairs shall their temples adorn,

Like lambs they shall still in my bosom be home.
