Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors. Offerings may be placed in the plates by the doors as we exit the sanctuary.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER…………… On this Holy Trinity Sunday, we do not so much explain God as confess Him. We testify to Him who has revealed Himself to us. To the mind in search of reasonable answers, God will always be a question or riddle to be solved. But to the empty heart, the Holy Spirit leads us to see with faith the God whose majesty has worked for our salvation and whose mercy has rescued us sinners from sin and the grave. Like Nicodemus of old, we want to know how, yet our Lord gives us not the how, but the who; not the explanation, but the mystery of mercy big enough to save us. We come today rejoicing in the God who is bigger than we are, but who becomes one of us to save us.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING SONG              “We Have Come Into His House”

Bruce T. Ballinger; 1976 MCA Music Publ., A.D.O. Universal Studio (Admin. by Universal Music Publishing Group); Sound III, Inc. (Admin. by Universal Music Publishing Group)

We have come into His house

gathered in His name

To worship Him.

(REPEAT)

We have come into His house

gathered in His name

To worship Christ the Lord,

Worship Him, Christ the Lord.

Let us lift up holy hands,

And magnify His name,

And worship Him.

(REPEAT)

Let us lift up holy hands,

And magnify His name,

And worship Christ the Lord,

Worship Him Christ the Lord.

So forget about yourself,

And concentrate on Him,

And worship Him.

(REPEAT)

So forget about yourself,

And concentrate on Him,

And worship Christ the Lord,

Worship Him Christ the Lord.

He is all my righteousness,

I stand complete in Him,

And worship Him.

(REPEAT)

He is all my righteousness,

I stand complete in Him,

And worship Christ the Lord,

Worship Him Christ the Lord.

OPENING BLESSING

Leader:  In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen!

OPENING UP TO GOD AND ONE ANOTHER

Leader:  We join in confessing our sins to God in order to hear once again his forgiveness that frees us from the guilt of our sin and allows us to live in joy and hope following Christ:

People:  Dear Lord, we come to you in all honesty and humility, admitting that we are sinners—we have sinned in our evil thoughts, in our hurtful words, and in our destructive actions.  We also admit that we have at times been exclusive in thinking that Christ’s salvation is just for a few of us, rather than a gift for all people.  Help us, Lord, to hold on to that simple, pure Gospel of your gracious gift of salvation, and to share that good news with others in whatever ways we can, so that others may come to know you and your gracious gift.

SONG OF CONFESSION              “White as Snow”

White as snow, white as snow,

though my sins were as scarlet

Lord I know, Lord I know,

that I’m clean and forgiven.

Through the power of your blood,

Through the wonder of your love

Through faith in you I know that I can be………

white as snow.

(Repeat)

RECEIVING PEACE FROM GOD

Leader:  God knows our brokenness, and he knows our hearts, he knows our desire to live as his people day by day.  So he frees us from the guilt of our sin by assuring us of his forgiveness.  In God’s name and by his command, I proclaim to you the forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People:  Amen.

CREED (Part 1)

Leader:  As an expression of our faith, we confess the words of the Athanasian Creed, the longest and most recent of the three Ecumenical Creeds of the Church.  Because of its length, we will be dividing the Creed into two sections and will be assisted by readers in speaking it.

People:  Whoever desires to be saved must, above all, hold the universal faith.  Whoever does not keep it whole and undefiled will without doubt perish eternally.

Reader 1:  And the universal faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in Unity, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance.  For the Father is one person, the Son is another, and the Holy Spirit is another.  But the Godhead of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is one:  the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.

Reader 2:  Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit:  the Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated; the Father infinite, the Son infinite, the Holy Spirit infinite; the Father eternal, the Son eternal, the Holy Spirit eternal.

People:  And yet there are not three Eternals, but one Eternal, just as there are not three Uncreated or three Infinites, but one Uncreated and one Infinite.

Reader 1:  In the same way, the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, the Holy Spirit almighty; and yet there are not three Almighties, but one Almighty.

Reader 2:  So the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God; and yet there are not three Gods, but one God.  So the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, the Holy Spirit is Lord; and yet there are not three Lords, but one Lord.

People:  Just as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge each distinct person as God and Lord, so also are we prohibited by the universal church to say that there are three Gods or Lords.

Reader 1:  The Father is not made nor created nor begotten by anyone.  The Son is neither made nor created, but begotten of the Father alone.  The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten, but proceeding.

Reader 2:  Thus, there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.

Reader 1:  And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another;

Reader 2:  but the whole three persons are coeternal with each other and coequal, so that in all things, as has been stated above, the Trinity in Unity and Unity in Trinity is to be worshiped.

People:  Therefore, whoever desires to be saved must think thus about the Trinity.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

Old Testament:            Genesis 1:1-2:4a

The account of creation

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.

God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”

And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so.

And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.

10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so.

12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years,

15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.

16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.

17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,

18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”

21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.

25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

 27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

2Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

These are the generations   of the heavens and the earth when they were created,   in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL       Matthew 28:16-20

Jesus gives His Great Command to the disciples.

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted.

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to You, O Christ.

SERMON HYMN          “Holy, Holy, Holy”

Text: Bishop Reginald Heber, 1783-1826, alt. Tune: John B. Dykes, 1823-1876; ©1978 published by Augsburg Publishing House, Minneapolis & Board of Publication, Lutheran Church in America, Philadelphia.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

.

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love and purity.

.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

CREED (Part 2)

Leader:  We continue and conclude the confession of our faith today with the second part of the Athanasian Creed.

People:  But it is also necessary for everlasting salvation that one faithfully believe the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, it is the right faith that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time both God and man.

Reader 1:  He is God, begotten from the substance of the Father before all ages; and He is man, born from the substance of His mother in this age: perfect God and perfect man, composed of a rational soul and human flesh;

Reader 2:  equal to the Father with respect to His divinity, less than the Father with respect to His humanity.

People:  Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ:

Reader 1:  one, however, not by the conversion of the divinity into flesh, but by the assumption of the humanity into God; one altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of person.

Reader 2:  For as the rational soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one Christ, who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Reader 1:  At His coming all people will rise again with their bodies and give an account concerning their own deeds.

Reader 2:  And those who have done good will enter into eternal life, and those who have done evil into eternal fire.

People:  This is the universal faith; whoever does not believe it faithfully and firmly cannot be saved.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Leader:  Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.  As we grow in the Christian faith, we pray for an increase of the Word, that it be freely shared and bring the good news of sins forgiven through Christ to every place.  Triune God in mercy,

People:  hear our prayer.

Leader:  We pray for the world in which we live, asking that there would be times of peace and security in our days and that we know days of blessings and joy.  Triune God in mercy,

People:  hear our prayer.

Leader:  We pray for the Church and for this household of faith, that we be the radiant Bride of Christ, daily growing in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  We also pray for the Christian churches in Philomath, that their fellowship continues to be salt for the community of Philomath and a light to those who need Your grace.  Triune God in mercy,

People:  hear our prayer.

Leader:  We lift our petitions now for the sick, the homebound, and all who this day are in need of our intercession, (especially…….), that their prayers soon be answered and that they be supported by God’s people as they honor Christ.  Triune God in mercy,

People:  hear our prayer.

Leader: We pray for our graduates at Peace this year—Nicholas and Ingrid, that they continue to look to You for support. We pray also that they discover ways in their continued education to joyfully serve You and others. Triune God in mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader:  Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

People:   Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom,

And the power, and the glory,

Forever and ever.  Amen

Bind us together

Bind us together with love.

.

There is only one God.

There is only one King.

There is only one body.

That is why I sing.

Bind us together Lord,

Bind us together with cords

that cannot be broken,

Bind us together Lord,

Bind us together

Bind us together with love.

CLOSING HYMN      “Immortal, Invisible, God only Wise”

Carl Gotthelf Glaser; Charles Wesley; Words: Public Domain ; Music: Public Domain

Immortal, invisible,

God only wise,

In light inaccessible

hid from our eyes,

Most blessed,

most glorious,

the Ancient of Days,

Almighty, victorious,

thy great name we praise!

.

Unresting, unhasting,

and silent as light,

Nor wanting, nor wasting,

thou rulest in might;

Thy justice like mountains

high soaring above

Thy clouds which are fountains

of goodness and love.

.

To all, life thou givest,

to both great and small;

In all life thou livest,

the true life of all;

We blossom and flourish

like leaves on the tree,

And wither and perish,

but naught changeth thee.

.

Thou reignest in glory;

thou dwellest in light;

Thine angels adore thee,

all veiling their sight;

All laud we would render;

oh, help us to see

‘Tis only the splendor

of light hideth thee!

Dismissal

Leader: Go in Peace. Serve the Lord!

People: Thanks be to God!
