Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

AS WE GATHER………….. In our world of constant change and abundant challenges to our faith, we often feel alone, and fear causes us to question where God is and what He is doing. Our Good Shepherd has pledged never to abandon us but to be with us always. More than this, He has promised that no one can snatch us from His hand. He is the powerful Good Shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep. Because of the investment He has made in us, He does not surrender us to temptation, trouble, trial, or test.

RINGING OF THE BELL ……After the ringing of the bell we take a few moments in silence to prepare our hearts and minds for worship.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING SONG            “Shine, Jesus Shine”

By: Graham Kendrick; ©1987 Make Way Music (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.)

Lord, the Light of Your love is shining

In the midst of the darkness shining;

Jesus, Light of the World, shine upon us.

Set us free by the truth You now bring us.

Shine on me, shine on me.

Chorus:                             Shine, Jesus, shine,

Fill this land with the Father’s glory;

Blaze, Spirit, blaze, Set our hearts on fire.

Flow, river flow, Flood the nations with

grace and mercy.

Send forth Your Word, Lord,

and let there be light.

.

Lord, I come to Your awesome presence,

From the shadows into Your radiance;

By the blood I may enter Your brightness,

Search me, try me, consume all my darkness,

Shine on me, shine on me.

Chorus

As we gaze on Your kingly brightness,

So our faces display Your likeness;

Ever changing from glory to glory,

Mirror’d here may our lives tell Your story,

Shine on me, shine on me.

Chorus

People: that He laid down His life for us.

Leader: “I am the good shepherd,” says the Lord.

Leader: Whoever keeps His commandments abides in God, and God in him.

People: And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

OPENING PRAYER

Leader: We pray together.

People:  Great Shepherd of the sheep, You search us out when we are lost.  You pick us up when we are hurt and You bring us to safe pasture.  As we gather for worship this day, help us to clearly see and hear of Your love for us so that we can leave with confidence knowing that, with You as our Shepherd, we have nothing to fear.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.

WE CONFESS OUR SINS

Leader:  We confess our sins to God and one another:

~~~~~ Silence for Reflection ~~~~~
WE RECEIVE GOD’S FORGIVENESS
PRAISE SONG                      “Shout to the Lord”
Darlene Zschech; © 1993 Wondrous Worship
My Jesus, my Savior,
Lord, there is none like You,
All of my days I want to
praise the wonders of Your mighty love.
My Comfort, my Shelter,
Tower of refuge and strength;
Let ev’ry breath, all that I am
Never cease to worship You.
.
Shout to the Lord
All the earth let us sing
Power and majesty
Praise to the King
Mountains bow down
And the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name
.
I sing for joy
At the work of Your hands
Forever I’ll love You
Forever I’ll stand
Nothing compares to the promise
I have in You
(Repeat all)
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
First Reading:                  Revelation 7:9-17
The Lamb who sits on the throne shall be their Shepherd.
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,
12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” 13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
 15  “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.  16  They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat.  17  For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water,   and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
Holy Gospel                           John 10:22-30
Jesus is our Good Shepherd.
22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People:  Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN       “He Leadeth Me, O Blessed Thought”
Text: Joseph H. Gilmore, 1834-1918, alt. Tune: William B Bradbury, 1816-1868; ©1978 Published by Augsburg Publishing House, Minneapolis & Board of Publication, Lutheran Church in America, Philadelphia.
He leadeth me, O blessed thought!
O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where-e’er I be,
Still God’s hand that lead-eth me.
.
Chorus:                 He leadeth me, He leadeth me,
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.
.
Lord, I would clasp Thy hand in mine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content whatever lot I see,
Since ‘tis my God that leadeth me.
Chorus
And when my task on earth is done,
When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Still God through Jordan leadeth me.
Chorus
Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
And was born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate.
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Christian Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
CLOSING SONG             “Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us”
Text: Dorothy A. Thrupp, 1779-1847; Tune: Ludvig M. Lindeman, 1812-1887
Savior, like a shepherd lead us,
Much we need your tender care;
In your pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use your fold prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
You have bought us, we are yours.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
You have bought us, we are yours.
.
We are yours; in love befriend us,
Be the Guardian of our way;
Keep your flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear us children when we pray.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear us children when we pray.
.
You have promised to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be;
You have mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse, and pow’r to free.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Early let us turn to you.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Early let us turn to you.
.
Early let us seek your favor;
Early let us do your will;
Blessed Lord and only Savior,
With your love our spirits fill:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Your have loved us, love us still;
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Your have loved us, love us still;
Dismissal
Leader:  Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God!
POST-SERVICE MUSIC
Announcements
CHRISTIAN CAREGIVING………… Pastor Lucke will be offering Christian Caregiving Skill building classes in the month of May via zoom. All are welcome to attend. The sessions will be on the Wednesdays of May 14, 21 and 28 at 10 am. The sessions won’t go any longer than 40 minutes. It is certainly good to seek professional counseling services for serious concerns (ie. serious mental or emotional disturbance, severe depression, etc.). There are ,however, some ways in which Christians can support others who are experiencing common life crises: death of a loved one, financial problems, feeling guilty, separation from a loved one. Pastor Lucke’s sessions will address how to caregive in these instances. See him if you would like to attend so that you can receive the email link.
BIBLE STUDY……………. Elder Dave is leading an Adult Sunday School class on the Book of James. All are welcome to attend! James brings the Christian faith down to earth. We’ll discover what it means to be a true community and honor each other in our life together. We’ll discover how important encouraging words are to someone going through a hard time. We’ll also discover how our words can set things on fire. Bring your Bibles and an open mind to this study. All are welcome! We meet in the sanctuary at 9 am each Sunday.
NEW MEMBER CLASS…………… Pastor Lucke will be offering a new member class in the month of June. RSVP to him so that date and time can be best determined. This is an opportunity to discover what it means to be Lutheran, what values Peace holds dear, and how a person can find a place to belong and serve in the church family.
ROTARY PRESENTATION………. The Philomath Rotary Club is meeting on Tuesday, May 20th at noon and will have a special presentation. The presentation will be by Robert Thurston. Robert is a Philomath Rotarian and has served as a USAID employee for many years. Robert will give a sense of what USAID does from an ‘on the ground’ perspective. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to Lindy if you will be attending so that we can plan ahead.
FURNITURE SHARE…………… Peace is supporting a new community partner this year: Furniture Share. The housing crunch in Benton County is a well known problem. One item we don’t often think about is furniture. Due to the high cost in housing, many people struggle filling their homes with essential furniture, household items and food boxes. Furniture Share provides for 4,000 individuals each year at the poverty/extreme low income level. Do you want to find out more about Furniture Share and visit? Peace has been invited for a tour of the facility and to find out more about its mission. The date of the visit is Thursday, May 29th at 2:00 pm. Let Pastor Lucke know if you’d like to attend!
