Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER… Imagine someone offering you a gift—a gift that you cannot get on your own. How do you think the giver of that gift would react if you rejected it? That is what today’s Readings are about. The children of Israel refused to go into the Promised Land. God’s response was, “They shall not enter My rest.” They had been slaves and gotten a good taste of the harshness of the wilderness. Yet they refused to go into a land where they would have rest. Today, God offers you rest through the gift of the forgiveness of sins. Do no miss out on the rest God offers you right now through Jesus!

WELCOME & Announcements

OPENING BLESSING

Leader:  In the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen!

Leader: When the children of Israel lived in Egypt and were slaves,

People: God sent ten plagues upon Egypt to set His people free and give them rest.

Leader: When the children of Israel had their backs to the Red Sea.

People: They saw God part the Red Sea and they walked across on dry ground as He gave them rest from their enemy.

Leader: When there was no way out for us because of our sin,

People: God sent His Son to the cross, that all who believe would have eternal life and rest in that hope.

BEING HONEST ABOUT OURSELVES…

Leader: Almighty and eternal God, You see things from an eternal perspective,

People: and we see things from a limited human perspective.

Leader: You are omniscient, knowing all;

People: we are but mortal.

Leader: In many and various ways You spoke to Your people in the past, using the prophets as Your mouthpieces.

People: Your people often disobeyed and provoked You.

Leader: Today, in these last times, You have spoken to us through Your Son.

People: When we fail to believe in Him, and the message of the cross, we put ourselves in danger of missing out on the rest You desire to give us.

Leader: Forgive us for going against You, Lord,

People: for the sins of thought, word, and deed. Forgive us; wash us clean today in Your words of forgiveness.

~~~~~ Moment of Silence ~~~~~
Leader:  Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
SERVICE OF THE WORD
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Let us pray. Almighty God, You created mankind not only to work but to rest as well. Yet we too often spend our energy and time seeking and working for those things that trap and destroy us. By the guidance of Your Holy Spirit, turn us away from those traps that take away our true rest. Help us recall our true rest and hope is in You alone. This we ask in the name of Jesus, who came to give us rest, who with You and the Holy Spirit is one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
The SCRIPTURE LESSONS
The First Lesson:                   Ephesians 2:1-10
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
The Gospel:               Mark 10:23-31
Leader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the twelfth chapter.
People: Glory to You, O Lord.
23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!”
24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”
28 Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel,
30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People:  Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN:       “Rock of Ages Cleft for Me”
By: August M. Toplady & Thomas Hastings
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me Hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
be of Sin the double cure,
save me from its guilt and pow’r.
.
Not the labor of my hands,
can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
.
Nothing in my hands I bring,
simply to Thy cross I cling;
naked, come to Thee for dress,
helpless look to Thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly, wash me.
Savior, or I die.
.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
when my eyes shall close in death,
which I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in Thee.
APOSTLES’ CREED
People:         I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Christian Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life + everlasting.  Amen.
OFFERING
We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us—ourselves, our time, our possessions.
OFFERTORY
PRAYERS OF GOD’S PEOPLE
Leader:  Almighty God, You search our hearts and have seen our sin, and yet in Your love have reconciled us to Yourself through Your Son. Give us Your Spirit, the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ, that our lives may grow in devotion to You for the salvation You have so graciously given us. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: Hear our prayer.
Leader: Guide, we pray, our congregation in life and witness. Give us Your grace, so that in a land where strife is too common, we will be a place of peace. In our divided nation, make this Your congregation a gathering place of hearts united in You who extend Your welcome to all. Inspire all the members of Your congregation to love this place where Your name is invoked and Your grace proclaimed. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: Hear our prayer.
Leader: For the daily bread that sustains us in life: For food and health, for housing and clothing, for employment, for moderate weather, for justice and peace in our community and nation, that in every time of abundance and time of need, we may know Your peace in our hearts. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: Hear our prayer.
Leader: For… (additional intercessions of the congregation). Lord, in Your mercy,
People: Hear our prayer.
Leader: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
People: Amen.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen
DISTRIBUTION HYMN
 “Because He Lives”
By: W.J. and Gloria Gaither; Copyright 1971 by William J. Gaither. All rights reserved.
God sent His son, they called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal, and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon;
An empty grave is there to
prove my Savior lives
.
Chorus:           Because He lives I can face tomorrow;
Because He lives all fear is gone,
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living
just because He lives.
.
How sweet to hold a new born baby
And feel the pride and joy He gives;
But greater still the calm assurance
This child can face uncertain days
because He lives.
Chorus
And then one day I’ll cross the river;
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain.
And then as death gives way to victory,
I’ll see the lights of glory
and I’ll know He lives.
Chorus
CLOSING BLESSING
Leader:  The Lord bless you and keep you,
The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
People:  Amen.
CLOSING SONG:           “Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer”
Text: William Williams, 1717-1791; tr. composite, alt. © Tune: John Hughes, 1873-1932
Guide me ever, great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak, but you are mighty;
Hold me with your pow’rful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven
Feed me now and ever more,
Feed me now and ever more.
.
Open now the crystal fountain
Where the healing waters flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong deliv’rer, strong deliv’rer,
Shield me with your mighty arm,
Shield me with your mighty arm.
.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs and praises, songs and praises,
I will raise forever more,
I will raise forever more.
Dismissal
Leader:  Go in peace! Serve the Lord!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Bazaar News….
The bazaar is next Saturday!  Please come!!
The Ladies Guild Holiday Bazaar is a fun shopping experience with a variety of beautiful, handcrafted items; beautiful, themed gift baskets that are wrapped and ready for gift giving, fun “thrifting” opportunities in Granny’s Attic, and delicious cookies and baked goods for your holiday entertaining.
Remember, proceeds benefit local charitable organizations and Ladies Guild efforts.
Thank you for your support!  It is greatly appreciated!
What is Granny’s Attic?   For those of you that don’t know, Granny’s Attic is an extension of our annual bazaar. We take in donations of gently used items. Proceeds from the sale of these items benefit organizations in and around Philomath. During the bazaar, Granny’s Attic will be set up in two of the classrooms off the Fellowship Hall.   The bazaar is rapidly approaching. Meaning it’s time to think about how you can help. Donations will be accepted now through Sunday, October 20th (please NO clothes, shoes, or large items). So, think about cleaning out a drawer, closet, or garage, and please keep us in mind.  For questions, pick up, or delivery contact Jani B. 541.740.4650
ALL SAINTS’ DAY: Peace will be celebrating All Saints’ Day on Sunday, November 3. It is an opportunity to remember those who have gone before us and died in Christ. Remembering these individuals allows us to strengthen our own faith and follow their path. Saints are not people to be worshiped—they are simply examples for us to follow.
Food Bank Donations. November will be here soon and it’s time to start thinking about Thanksgiving. But for many people in our local community, Thanksgiving is a challenging time because of a lack of food for a Thanksgiving meal. The food bank resources at Philomath Community Services are very low. Please consider donating some food in the basket provided in the Narthex to help support those less fortunate in our community.
Portals of Prayer. The new Portals of Prayer for October through December are out and available in the Narthex.
