Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER… The Holy Gospel for today is about why the dietary laws never saved and is a warning about what we think or say. The Old Testament Reading provides a warning against not passing on the teachings to the next generation. Both Readings allow us to ponder what exactly our legacy will be as we pass beliefs and teachings on to the next generation. Our aim is to pass along our reliance on God and His gracious goodness.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God,

And His righteousness.

And all these things

Ask, and it shall be given unto you;

Seek, and you shall find.

Knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

Man does not live by bread alone,

But by every word

That proceeds

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

FIRST READING:               I Corinthians 1:10-17

10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12 What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name.

16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.)

17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.

People:  Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL:                         Mark 7:14-23

People are not defiled by what they eat but by what comes out of their hearts and mouths.

14 And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: 15 There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.”

17 And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable.

18 And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)

20 And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,

22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People:  Praise to You, O Christ.

SERMON HYMN         “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”

Text: Prayer of St. Francis; adapted by Sebastian Temple, Tune: Sebastian Temple, b. 1928; Copyright 1967, 1975, 1980 Franciscan Communications.

Make me a channel of your peace.

Where there is hatred,

let me bring your love.

Where there is injury,

your pardon, Lord,

And where there’s doubt,

true faith in you.

.

Make me a channel of your peace.

Where there’s despair in life,

let me bring hope.

Where there is darkness,

only light,

And where there’s sadness,

ever joy.

.

Oh, Master, grant that

I may never seek

So much to be consoled

as to console.

To be understood

as to understand.

To be loved as to love

with all my soul.

.

Make me a channel of your peace.

It is in pardoning that

we are pardoned,

In giving of ourselves

that we receive,

And in dying that we’re

born to eternal life.

And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the

OFFERTORY

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Leader: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

Leader: Heavenly Father, in Holy Baptism You have caused waters to break forth in the wilderness and made streams in the desert of this world. Open our eyes to this new life in Christ and our ears to hear Your Word. Free us to walk uprightly, and loose our tongues to praise You for this treasure. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader: Heavenly Father, You have made us all heirs of Your kingdom through Holy Baptism, holding the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. Keep us from showing partiality and making distinctions among ourselves, and make us rich in good works. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader:  Heavenly Father, create and sustain in us a lively faith in Christ Jesus, and lead us by Your Spirit to be active in all good works. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader: Heavenly Father, help parents to raise up their children to know You as their help and hope, that they may not put their trust in princes in whom there is no salvation. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader: Heavenly Father, we place our hope in You and ask Your blessing on ______________ and all rulers, that their plans would be ordered for the welfare of those they govern and that You would execute Your justice for the oppressed. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader: Heavenly Father, behold graciously the sick and those in any need [especially _____________]. Lord, in Your mercy,

People: hear our prayer.

Leader: All these things and whatever else You know that we need, grant us, Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever.

People: Amen.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom,

And the power, and the glory,

Forever and ever.  Amen

CLOSING SONG:           “To God Be the Glory”

By: Fanny J. Crosby & William H. Doane; 1971 By William J. Gaither, The Fellowship Publications

To God be the glory,

great things He has done,

So loved He the world

that He gave us His Son.

Who yielded His life

an atonement for sin,

And opened the life gate

that all may go in.

.

Chorus:                  Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the earth hear His voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father,

Thro’ Jesus the Son,

And give Him the glory,

great things He has done.

.

O perfect redemption,

the purchase of blood,

To ev’ry believer

the promise of God;

The vilest offender

who truly believes,

That moment from

Jesus a pardon receives.

Chorus

Great things He hath taught us,

great things He hath done,

And great our rejoicing

thro’ Jesus the Son;

But purer, and higher,

and greater will be

Our wonder, our transport,

when Jesus we see.

Chorus

Fall KiCK OFF. We have some great plans for the fall at Peace. Mark your calendars for Rally Day Next Sunday September 8. Fellowship will consist of a BBQ with lots of fun and games for all. Invite your friends and neighbors.

Bazaar News…. One of the most sought-after items at the bazaar are the incredibly beautiful gift baskets put together by our talented team.  The baskets are centered around themes (breakfast basket, coffee basket, wine basket, baking basket, car care basket, get well basket, etc.) with items purchased by our generous congregation members.  See Kay G. for more details!  Some great shopping places include TJMaxx, Homegoods, and World Market.  Please remember to check expiration dates on food items.  Nothing that will expire sooner than March 2025.

Basket Items are due next Sunday, September 8th!

If this would be easier…would you consider donating money for the baskets and our team of shoppers can purchase items?

What is Granny’s Attic?   For those of you that don’t know, Granny’s Attic is an extension of our annual bizarre. We take in donations of gently used items. Proceeds from the sale of these items benefit organizations in and around Philomath. During the bazaar,  Granny’s Attic will be set up in two of the classrooms off the Fellowship Hall.   The bazaar is rapidly approaching. Meaning it’s time to think about how you can help. Donations will be accepted now through Sunday, October 20th (please NO clothes, shoes, or large items). So, think about cleaning out a drawer, closet, or garage, and please keep us in mind.  For questions, pick up, or delivery contact Jani B. 541.740.4650

Wanted: Assistant for Elementary Sunday School Class. Do you enjoy making crafts with popsicle sticks? Listening to 5 year olds tell silly stories about milk coming out of their noses? Then consider yourself overly qualified to help in the Elementary Sunday School class this year. Callie is looking for a helper (or multiple folks who could rotate) to assist her with the K-4th graders starting September 8th. Just 45 minutes of your time each week would make a huge difference for our little ones just starting out in their faith journeys.  Let Anne know if you are interested! 505-797-7279 or [email protected]
