Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

AS WE GATHER… In case you haven’t noticed….we are living in the digital age. Although the technological and communication advancements in recent years have been impressive, it has left us isolated. Face to face friendships have been replaced with online friendships. In online relationships, you can keep others at a distance, connect on your own time, at the level you choose, and bail whenever you want. Today we are challenged to take on Jesus’ habit of committing to community. How has being in Christian community been a blessing to you?

OPENING SONG         “How Majestic is Your Name”

Michael W. Smith; Arr. by Henry Wiens; Copyright 1981 Meadowgreen Music Co. All rights reserved. Administered by Tree Publishing Co. Inc., 8 Music Sq. W. Nashville, TN 37203

O Lord, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

O Lord, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

O Lord, we praise your name!

O Lord, we magnify your name!

Prince of Peace, mighty God!

O Lord God Almighty.

O Lord, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

O Lord, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

O Lord, we praise your name!

O Lord, we magnify your name!

Prince of Peace, mighty God!

O Lord God Almighty.

CALLING ON GOD

Leader:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People:  Amen.

WE CONFESS…

Leader: Our help is in the name of the Lord,

People: who made heaven and earth.

Leader: If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

People: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.

Leader:  Since we are gathered to our Lord Jesus in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition.  Together as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying:  God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

People:  Almighty God, have mercy on us, forgive the weakness of our faith and our many sins, and restore us to fellowship with You and one another, now and forever.

Leader:  In Holy Baptism our heavenly Father declared us to be His children and united us to His Son, by whose death and resurrection all our sins are forgiven. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People:  Amen.

SONG OF CONFIDENCE      “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)”

Chorus:   Bless the Lord O my soul O my soul

Worship His holy name

Sing like never before O my soul

I’ll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up it’s a new day dawning

It’s time to sing Your song again

Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me

Let me be singing when the evening comes

Chorus

You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger

Your name is great and Your heart is kind

For all Your goodness I will keep on singing

Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

Chorus

And on that day when my strength is failing

The end draws near and my time has come

Still my soul will sing Your praise unending

Ten thousand years and then forevermore

Chorus

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Leader:  Let us Pray. Lord Jesus, at times we fear that You are far away from us.

People:  Forgive us for doubting Your presence, and give us confidence that our redeemer and vindicator is always near;

Leader:  for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People:  Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS

FIRST LESSON:       I Corinthians 13:1-13

13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;

it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.

People:  Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL:              Mark 2:1-12

And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.

And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.

And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts,

“Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?

Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—

11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.

People:  Praise to You, O Christ.

SERMON HYMN:        “Just a Closer Walk with Thee”

Jack Schrader; © Words: Public Domain Music: 1980, 1997, 2009 Hope Publishing Company

I am weak but Thou art strong;

Jesus, keep me from all wrong;

I’ll be satisfied as long

As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Refrain:   Just a closer walk with Thee,

Grant it,  Jesus is my plea,

Daily walking close to Thee,

Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares,

If I falter, Lord, who cares?

Who with me my burden shares?

None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

Refrain

When my feeble life is o’er,

Time for me will be no more;

Guide me gently, safely o’er

To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

Refrain

CREED

People:    I have faith in God, in response to overwhelming love….I believe that God created me and all that I have, and has given to me gifts beyond measure.

I have faith in Jesus, who emptied Himself out of His love for me…I believe that Christ died on a cross for my sin, conquered death and the power of evil, and was raised to life on the third day. His death is mine, His resurrection is mine, new life is mine because of Jesus’ words and work.

I believe in the Holy Spirit in response to overwhelming love. I believe that the Holy Spirit is present here among us and lives within each person. The Spirit continues to call people by the Gospel, and creates and builds the church of Christ. Through the power of the Spirit I have power to stand in strength and against all adversity. I believe that Jesus is preparing a place for me and will come again to take each of us to be with Him. Amen.

OFFERING

We offer our thanksgiving for what God has first given us—ourselves, our time, our possessions.

OFFERTORY

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Leader:  Let us pray for the nations around the world, the church wherever it is found, and for ourselves here in this place.

Leader: Wherever nations quarrel and plunge toward war, O God, open the ears of their leaders to hear the wisdom from above and pursue pace.

People:  Move them to find joy in humble service.

Leader:  Wherever international alliances, national leaders, and groups within society follow the lead of their selfish ambitions at the expense of the downtrodden and forgotten people across borders and in their midst, O God, give both citizens and their leaders hearts that are open to reason, full of mercy, impartial and sincere.

People:  Grant that peace break out across borders and justice within them.

Leader:  Whenever our conduct betrays worldly jealously and selfish ambition, O God, turn our laughter to mourning and our joy to gloom until we recognize Your unending grace.

People:  Help us seek to meet the needs of the people around us in humble service.

Leader: Wherever people call out to You in their distress, (especially……), O God, visit, relieve, heal, and console them according to Your gracious will.

People:  Use as part of Your answers to their fervent prayers.

Leader: Heavenly Father, hear us and all for whom we pray, as we rely on Your gracious plans for all we need.

People:  through Your Son, Jesus, our Lord, in whose name we pray. Amen.

THE COMMUNION

Leader: We declare ourselves to be Easter people.

People: We have come to share in the table that He has prepared for us.

Leader: He took the bad news of sin and guilt and changed it to good news through His dying and rising for us.

People: We are here to celebrate that Good News and the presence of Christ with us.

Leader: And He took the bread, blessed it and broke it. He said to His disciples—

People: “Take, eat; this is my body.”

Leader: Also, He took a cup of wine. After saying thanks, He gave it to them saying—

People: “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant. It is poured out for the forgiveness of sins. Do this to remember me.”

Leader: We thank You, Lord God, for these elements given in love for us. Accept us, forgive us, and heal us—that we might live lives that are pleasing to You.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom,

And the power, and the glory,

Forever and ever.  Amen

COMMUNE TOGETHER

CLOSING SONG:                      “All the People Said Amen!”

Matt Maher | Paul Moak | Trevor Morgan; © 2013 Universal Music – Brentwood Benson Publishing (Admin. by Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing, Inc.), Thankyou Music (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing), Valley Of Songs Music (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing), Trevor Morgan Music

You are not alone if you are lonely
When you feel afraid you’re not the only
We are all the same in need of mercy
To be forgiven and be free
It’s all you got to lean on
But thank God it’s all you need

Chorus:   And all the people said amen whoa

And all the people said amen
Give thanks to the Lord for His love never ends
And all the people said amen

If you’re rich or poor well it don’t matter
Weak or strong you know love is what we’re after
We’re all broken but we’re all in this together
God knows we stumble and fall
And He so loved the world
He sent His son to save us all

Chorus

Blessed are the poor in spirit who are torn apart
Blessed are the persecuted and the pure in heart
Blessed are the people hungry for another start
For theirs is the kingdom the kingdom of God

Chorus (x2)

Dismissal

Leader:  Go in peace! Serve the Lord!

People:  Thanks be to God!

Wanted: Assistant for Elementary Sunday School Class. Do you enjoy making crafts with popsicle sticks? Listening to 5 year olds tell silly stories about milk coming out of their noses? Then consider yourself overly qualified to help in the Elementary Sunday School class this year. Callie is looking for a helper (or multiple folks who could rotate) to assist her with the K-4th graders starting September 8th. Just 45 minutes of your time each week would make a huge difference for our little ones just starting out in their faith journeys.  Let Anne know if you are interested! 505-797-7279 or [email protected]

Thank you for a great Fall Kickoff BBQ. Thank you to all our volunteers who helped to make our spring picnic such a blessing to each of us, our families, and friends. We appreciate everything you did as many of you were working very hard. Words are not enough to express how grateful we are for all the help we received, and your kindness and generosity are well noted.  God bless you!

Rotary Club Presentation this Tuesday. Perched atop a hill but somewhat hidden on the corner of Pioneer and 10th, the old College of Philomath building represents a peek into the city’s past. A local nonprofit organization believes it can breathe new life into the aging structure to serve the community well into the future.

Scott Ramsey, who has been holding on to a vision for the building’s revitalization since his involvement began two decades ago, said this week that the project is about to ramp up again now.

Want to learn a little about some history from right here in Philomath? Then come to the Rotary club meeting on September 17 at noon in the fellowship hall and hear from Scott about how he is bringing this part of Philomath’s history forward into the future.

Lunch will be provided so let Dan or Lindy know if you would like to attend.

Decorating the church for fall. We are looking for items to decorate the church for fall. Specifically, we need cornstalks, pumpkins, gourds, etc., to decorate outside and for the bazaar.  If you could provide one or two items, that would be a great help. Please put your donated items in the kitchen on the counter or right inside the west door to the fellowship hall.  Please talk to Sally S. for additional information.
