Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER…………. Imagine someone asking you, “Describe, if any, what your current habits, or rhythms look like when it comes to studying Scripture. What is going well and what is not going so well?” The Bible only describes one story of Jesus as a grown child—it is found in Luke 2. In this passage, Jesus is talking with and learning from the scholars about the Scriptures. The end of this passage relates that Jesus continued to grow in wisdom. We are encouraged today to join Jesus in learning about the Scriptures. This is excellent for us because it is in the Scriptures that we discover that God desires to be in a covenant relationship with us.

WELCOME & Announcements

OPENING SONG        “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face.

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace.

REPEAT

BLESSING AND FOCUS

Leader:  In the name of the Father,

People:  who created the ocean and the sky, the rivers and the clouds, the rain and the snow.

Leader: In the name of the Son,

People: who stilled the storm of the sea and quieted the thunder with his voice.

Leader: In the name of the Spirit,

People: who hovered over the waters of creation and was present in the winds of Pentecost. Amen.

Leader: Sometimes in life, we don’t know where to go.

People: God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.

Leader: Sometimes in life, we wonder what is in store for us.

People: God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.

Leader: Sometimes in life, we feel afraid and alone.

People: There is only One we can turn to. With confidence we seek the Lord today.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Pastor:           Leader: We enjoy singing praises to God, but we truly need Him to look down on us in mercy. So often we fail to follow the directives for Christian living. So James urges, “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” Let us ask God for grace and mercy.

~~~~~ Silence for reflection ~~~~~
Pastor:           Leader: James writes, “Be patient . . . until the coming of the Lord. . . . Do not grumble against one another, brothers. . . . Let your ‘yes’ be yes and your ‘no’ be no. . . . Is anyone among you sick? . . . Pray over him.”
People:         People: We confess our impatience, our lack of love for our brothers and sisters in Christ, and our words that do not always reflect the love You have for us. We have sinned in thought, word, and deed. Heavenly Father, our only hope is in Your grace and mercy. Forgive us for Jesus’ sake.
Pastor:           Leader: God has cured our sickness of sin by sending His Son to die in our place. He values us and calms our fears, saying, “Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace.” As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People:  Amen.
SONG OF PRAISE           “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him, for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near,
Joining in glad adoration!
.
Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again.
Gladly forever adore him!
PRAYER FOCUS
Leader: Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, You want nothing to separate us from Your grace and mercy.
People:  Grant that we realize how valuable You consider us and then seek to be at peace with one another;
Leader:  through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People:  Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Epistle Reading:             I Corinthians 15:1-11
15 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.
8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.
Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL:                           Mark 9:38-50
38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.”
39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us.
41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.
42 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.
45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.
47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’
49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
Leader:  This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People:  Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON HYMN           “How Firm a Foundation”
Text: J. Rippon, A selection of Hymns, 1787, alt. Tune: early American; © Public Domain
How firm a foundation,
O saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in
His excellent word!
What more can He say
than to you He has said,
who unto the Savior
for refuge have fled?
.
“Fear not, I am with you,
Oh, be not dismayed,
For I am your God,
and will still give you aid;
I’ll strengthen you, help you,
and cause you to stand,
Upheld by My righteous,
omnipotent hand.”
.
“When through fiery trials
your pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient,
shall be your supply;
The flames shall not hurt you;
I only design
your dross to consume,
and your gold to refine.
.
Throughout all their lifetime
my people shall prove
My sov’reign, eternal,
unchangeable love;
And then, when gray hairs
shall their temples adorn,
Like lambs they shall still
in my bosom be borne.
APOSTLES’ CREED
People:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Christian Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life + everlasting.  Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen
CLOSING HYMN:                “To God Be the Glory”
By: Fanny J. Crosby & William H. Doane; 1971 By William J. Gaither, The Fellowship Publications
To God be the glory,
great things He has done,
So loved He the world
that He gave us His Son.
Who yielded His life
an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate
that all may go in.
.
Chorus:                  Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father,
Thro’ Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory,
great things He has done.
.
O perfect redemption,
the purchase of blood,
To ev’ry believer
the promise of God;
The vilest offender
who truly believes,
That moment from
Jesus a pardon receives.
Chorus
Great things He hath taught us,
great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing
thro’ Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher,
and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport,
when Jesus we see.
Chorus
Dismissal
Leader:  Go in peace! Serve the Lord!
People:  Thanks be to God!
