Peace Lutheran Church
We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence. If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher. Everyone is welcome.
The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.
Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.
Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.
There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.
Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors.

AS WE GATHER…………. How can our troubled situations be reversed? It takes God’s power. Today’s Gospel tells of how Jesus cast out demons and healed the deaf. He seeks to make such great reversals today! When we try to reverse troubled situations with our own powers, we fail. We are reminded of this today as we hear about how the disciples tried to exorcize a demon by themselves without prayer. We rely on God’s power and entrust our problems to Him.
OPENING PRAISE SONG “Come, Now is the Time to Worship”
Brian Doerksen, © 1998 Vineyard Songs (UK/Eire) (Admin. by Integrity Music)
Chorus: Come now is the time to worship
Come now is the time to give your heart
Come just as you are to worship
Come just as you are before your God
Come
One day every tongue
Will confess You are God
One day every knee will bow
Still the greatest treasure remains
For those who gladly choose You now
Chorus
Willingly we choose to surrender our lives
Willingly our knees will bow
With all our heart soul mind and strength
We gladly choose You now
Chorus
Come come just as you are come come
Leader: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen.
Leader: I called on the name of the Lord:
People: O Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief!
Leader: The Lord has dealt bountifully with us.
People: The Lord has opened our ears.
Leader: The Lord has delivered us from death.
People: He wipes away tears from all faces.
Leader: He rescues our feet from stumbling
People: and restores our tongues to proclaim His good news.
Leader: Despite all of God’s actions on our behalf, we still struggle with sin our lives. Our tongues still curse. Our feet still stumble. Our ears still listen to lies and gossip. But our heavenly Father invites us to come to Him for restoration, renewal, and forgiveness.
~~~~~ Moment of Silence ~~~~~
Leader: We confess,
People: We have sinned against You and our neighbors in what we have said and what we have left unsaid. We have neglected opportunities to love our neighbors. We have stumbled and fallen again and again. We ask that You restore us, renew us, and forgive us on account of Jesus. Amen.
Leader: Almighty God, in His boundless love sent His Son, Jesus, to die and rise for our forgiveness and eternal life. Because of Jesus, we are restored, body and soul. Therefore, by Jesus’ authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen. We are forgiven in Christ. We are renewed and restored. Amen.
PRAISE SONG “Here I am to Worship”
Tim Hughes; © 2000 Thankyou Music
Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes let me see
Beauty that made
This heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You
.
Chorus: So here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that You’re my God
And You’re altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
.
King of all days
Oh so highly exalted
Glorious in heaven above
Humbly You came
To the earth You created
All for love’s sake became poor
Chorus
And I’ll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
And I’ll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
Chorus
Leader: Let us Pray. Grant us strength that comes from vibrant faith, O Lord.
People: By Your power and guidance, move us to show forth our faith with words and deeds of loving service;
Leader: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People: Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
8 Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that “all of us possess knowledge.” This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. 2 If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know.
3 But if anyone loves God, he is known by God. 4 Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.”
5 For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”—
6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
7 However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
8 Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. 9 But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak.
10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols?
11 And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12 Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.
Reader: This is the Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Jesus exorcises a demon and heals a blind man.
31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.
33 And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. 34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.”
35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it.
37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You, O Christ.
Jesus loves me this I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to Him belong,
They are weak, but He is strong.
.
Chorus: Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes Jesus loves me,
Yes Jesus loves me,
The Bible tells me so.
.
Jesus loves me, Loves me still,
Though I’m very weak and ill.
That I might from sin be free
Bled and died upon the tree.
Chorus
Jesus loves me! He who died,
Heavens gates to open wide
He will wash away my sin,
Let his little child come in.
Chorus
Jesus loves me he will stay,
Close beside me all the way.
That I might from sin be free,
I will henceforth live for thee.
Sermon
Pastor Jeremy Lucke
People: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Christian Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life + everlasting. Amen.
Lord, I come, I confess;
Bowing here I find my rest.
Without You I fall apart;
You’re the one that guides my heart.
Lord, I need You, oh I need You;
Ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness;
Oh God how I need You.
.
Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are.
Where You are Lord I am free;
Holiness is Christ in me.
Lord, I need You, oh I need You;
Ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness;
Oh God how I need You.
.
So teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way.
When I cannot stand, I’ll fall on You.
Jesus You’re my hope and stay.
Lord, I need You, oh, I need You;
Ev’ry hour I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness;
Oh, God, how I need You.
My one defense, my righteousness;
Oh, God, how I need You.
Wanted: Assistant for Elementary Sunday School Class. Do you enjoy making crafts with popsicle sticks? Listening to 5 year olds tell silly stories about milk coming out of their noses? Then consider yourself overly qualified to help in the Elementary Sunday School class this year. Callie is looking for a helper (or multiple folks who could rotate) to assist her with the K-4th graders starting September 8th. Just 45 minutes of your time each week would make a huge difference for our little ones just starting out in their faith journeys. Let Anne know if you are interested! 505-797-7279 or [email protected]
Fall Bible Study. We have a new adult Bible Study! All are welcome to attend The Chosen beginning Sunday, September 8 at 9 am in the sanctuary. We are picking up where we left off last spring. Each week we’ll discover more of the background of New Testament life. Each week we’ll be challenged to live out what it means to be chosen. Bring your Bible and an open heart!
What does it mean to be chosen? Being chosen by Jesus has beautiful and far-reaching implications—although it says even more about the Chooser than the chooses. We are loved because He’s love. We are saved because He’s merciful. We belong to the family of God because Jesus invites us, making the Bible and all its promises as true for us today as it was for God’s chosen nation.
Rotary Club presentation September 17. Perched atop a hill but somewhat hidden on the corner of Pioneer and 10th, the old College of Philomath building represents a peek into the city’s past. A local nonprofit organization believes it can breathe new life into the aging structure to serve the community well into the future.
Scott Ramsey, who has been holding on to a vision for the building’s revitalization since his involvement began two decades ago, said this week that the project is about to ramp up again now.
Want to learn a little about some history from right here in Philomath? Then come to the Rotary club meeting on September 17 at noon in the fellowship hall and hear from Scott about how he is bringing this part of Philomath’s history forward into the future.
Lunch will be provided so let Dan or Lindy know if you would like to attend.
