SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
February 17, 2019
AS WE GATHER…The Word of God provides us with great promises as well as warnings. The greatest blessing is saving faith in our hearts—faith in Jesus. But as we live by faith in this sinful world, we need to be warned against being concerned only with the things of this world. So we focus on Jesus and His main goal, that by His suffering, death, and resurrection we receive forgiveness of our sins and live in the hope of our resurrection to eternal life. Our Lord’s words of blessings and warnings of woes seek to guide us to that heavenly goal.
P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
WE CONFESS OUR SINS…
P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Silence for Reflection
P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have asked for forgiveness from You and received it but have failed to grant forgiveness to others. You ask us to release those who have wronged us…but instead we have held grudges and have looked down upon them. We are sorry that we have failed to reflect your forgiveness. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Lead us forward today so that we walk in Your ways.
P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. Your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. Through this forgiveness, Jesus also gives the power to practice forgiveness with others. Jesus once said to his disciples, “if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them (John 20:23).” As Jesus’ disciples, we too live by those words.
OPENING SONG OF PRAISE: “Majesty” TOSB 135
Majesty, worship His majesty.
Unto Jesus be all glory power and praise.
Majesty, kingdom authority flow from His throne
unto His own who His anthem raise.
So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus.
Magnify. Come glorify Christ Jesus the King.
Majesty, worship His majesty.
Unto Jesus be all glory power and praise.
Majesty, worship His majesty,
Jesus who died now glorified, King of all kings.
P: Let us pray…Father in heaven, by Your mighty Word grant to us every spiritual blessing in Christ, Your Son, that He guide us through our days, keeping us safe from everything that would distract us from His constant guiding and care; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen!
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Epistle Lesson: I Corinthians 15:12-20
The Resurrection of the dead
Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
CHOIR ANTHEM: We Live by Faith
By Pepper Choplin
We see things that are not yet there, but in our hopes and dreams.
Then watch them come through work and prayer into reality.
We trust in power beyond this earth, a pow’r we cannot prove.
But still we stand amazed at all the pow’r of God can do.
We live by faith and not by sight, through brightest days, through darkest nights,
For in our hearts, there shines a light, the glorious light of Christ
It was God who said, “Let there be light,” when the world was void and dark.
And so it is God’s own design for light to fill our hearts.
We live by faith and not by sight, through brightest days, through darkest nights,
for in our hearts, there shines a light, the glorious light of Christ.
One final day, we’ll close our eyes when our work on earth is done.
We’ll see the light beyond the skies shining brighter than the sun.
We’ll cast off faith, no need for faith to trust beyond our sight.
For there in full totality, we’ll see the throne, the glorious throne of Christ.
We live by faith and not by sight, through brightest days, through darkest nights,
For in our hearts, there shines a light, the glorious light of Christ.
For in our hearts there shines a light, the glorious light of Christ.
Gospel: Luke 6:17-26
Jesus ministers to a great multitude.
And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.
And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
“Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry.
“Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
“Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.
SERMON HYMN: “Now Thank We All Our God” LBW 533
Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done, in whom his world rejoices,
Who, from our mothers’ arms, has blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.
Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us,
And keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all harm in this world and the next.
All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given,
The Son, and him who reigns with them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God, whom earth and heav’n adore;
For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
SERMON “Who is Blessed?” Pastor Arden Walz
C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
And sits at the right hand of God
The Father Almighty.
From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Christian Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting. Amen.

Bind us together Lord,
Bind us together with cords
that cannot be broken,
Bind us together Lord,
Bind us together
Bind us together with love.
(Verse)

Jesus Loves Me TOSB 114
Jesus loves me –
this I know, For the Bible tells me so;
Little ones to Him belong –
They are weak, but He is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me –
loves me still, Though I’m very weak and ill;
That I might from sin be free,
Bled and died upon the tree.
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me –
He who died, Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in!
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
Jesus loves me –
He will stay Close beside me all the way,
Though hast bled and died for me,
I will henceforth live for the.
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
CLOSING SONG: To God Be the Glory TOSB 241
To God be the glory, great things He has done,
So loved He the world that He gave us His Son.
Who yielded His life an atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate that all may go in.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father,
Thro’ Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory,
great things He has done.
O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
To ev’ry believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father,
Thro’ Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory,
great things He has done.
Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing thro’ Jesus the Son;
But purer, and higher, and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father,
Thro’ Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory,
great things He has done.
P: Go in peace! Serve the Lord!
C: Thanks be to God!
