SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

January 19, 2020

AS WE GATHER: “Epiphany” means a “showing forth” or “revelation” of a divine being. It can also mean having a meaningful insight about something related to an individual’s life. In the season of Epiphany, we rediscover that, like Jesus, we have a calling to bring glory to God. In words of counsel to first-century Christians, Peter wrote: “Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that . . . they may see your good deeds and glorify God” (1 Peter 2:12). Not only is Jesus, the great Servant, shown forth in this season, we as His servants are on display as well. May we show forth servanthood in ways that glorify God!

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS

In an effort to respect the time we have in worship, we ask that all announcements are kept to 30 seconds.  If there is need for more information to be given, please contact the church office to have the information included in the bulletin, newsletter, slides, or email to the congregation.

CHORAL ANTHEM: “I Am Your Servant, O Lord”

                                                                                By: Don Besig & Nancy Price

I start ev’ry day with a prayer, O Lord, drawing me closer to you.

Help me to know I’m never alone; guide me in all that I do.

I grow ev’ry day in Your grace, O Lord, knowing I’m safe in Your sight.

Show me the way to follow my faith; help me to walk in Your light.

My heart ever grateful, my voice I will raise; my spirit rejoices in glory and praise. For I will be faithful all of my days. I am Your servant, O Lord.

I look all around me, what do I see; the bountiful gifts you have given to me,

the kindness and friendship of people who care, and the blessing of music to share.

I sing ev’ry day of Your love, O Lord, sharing the joy in my song.

Teach me to live, to trust and forgive; help me be steadfast and strong.

My heart ever grateful, my voice I will raise; my spirit rejoices in glory and praise.

For I will be faithful all of my days.  I am Your servant,

Your faithful servant, I am Your servant, O Lord.

OPENING BLESSING

L: In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

BEING HONEST ABOUT OURSELVES…

L: We confess our sins.  Kind and loving Father,

C: we confess to You our sinfulness both of nature and of choice.  We often lose heart in the face of obstacles, difficulties, and suffering.  We fail to call upon You for help, and we fail to keep trusting in Your goodness.  Hear us now for Jesus’ sake.  Forgive our sins and lead us onward to live each day in Your presence by the aid of Your Holy Spirit.

YOU ARE FORGIVEN

L: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

X WORD X

PRAYER OF THE DAY

L: Let us pray.  Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the prayers of Your people and grant us Your peace through all our days; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

FIRST READING                       1 Corinthians 1:1–9

Paul writes of the Lord’s faithfulness to His people.

Paul, called by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and our brother Sosthenes,

To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge— even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you— so that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

L: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL:                            John 1:29–42a

Jesus is proclaimed to be the Lamb of God.

    The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

SERMON HYMN: Let us Ever walk with Jesus”         LBW 487

Let us ever walk with Jesus, follow his example pure,

Through a world that would deceive us and to sin our spirit lure,

Onward in his footsteps treading, Pilgrims here, our home above,

Full of faith and hope and love, let us do our Father’s biding.

Faithful Lord, with me abide; I shall follow where you guide

Let us ever walk with Jesus and with patience bear our cross,

Joy will follow all our sadness; where he is there is no loss,

Though today we so no laughter, we shall reap celestial joy:

All discomforts that annoy shall give way to mirth here after.

Jesus, here I share your woe; Help me there your joy to know

Let us gladly die with Jesus. Since by death he conquered death,

He will free us from destruction, Give to us immortal breath.

Let us mortify all passion That would lead us into sin;

Then by grace we all may win Untold fruits of his creation.

Jesus unto you I die, There to live with you on high.

Let us also live with Jesus. He has risen from the dead

That to life we may awaken, Jesus since you are our head,

We are own living members; where you live, there we shall be

In your presence constantly, living there with you forever.

Jesus, if I faithful be, Life eternal grant to me.

AFFIRMATION OF OUR FAITH

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

             Creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

             And born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

             Was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

             And is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

             The holy Christian Church,

             The communion of saints,

             The forgiveness of sins,

             The resurrection of the body,

             And the life everlasting.  Amen.

DISTRIBUTION HYMNS

How Great Thou Art                                  TOSB 78

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds thy hand hath made,

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,

Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed;

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,

How great thou art! How great thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,

How great thou art! How great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander,

And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;

When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur

And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze;

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,

How great thou art! How great thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,

How great thou art! How great thou art!

And when I think that God, his Son not sparing,

Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,

That on the cross my burden gladly bearing

He bled and died to take away my sin;

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,

How great thou art! How great thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,

How great thou art! How great thou art!

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,

And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!

Then I shall bow in humble adoration

And there proclaim “My God how great thou art!”

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,

How great thou art! How great thou art!

Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee,

How great thou art! How great thou art!

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing                    LBW 499

Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace;

Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.

While the hope of endless glory fills my heart with joy and love,

Teach me ever to adore Thee, may I still thy goodness prove.

Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by thy help I’m come;

And I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.

Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God;

He, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be;

Let that grace now like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee.

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love;

Here’s my heartk, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above.

Great is Thy Faithfulness                        TOSB 55

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not,

As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!”

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,

Join with all nature in manifold witness

To Thy great faithfulness mercy and love.

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!”

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

“Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!”

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord unto me!

C: Amen.

CLOSING SONG: “Amazing Grace”                 TOSB 31

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound,

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found;

Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved;

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils, and snares

I have already come;

‘Tis grace has bought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing

God’s praise Than when we first be gun.

DISMISSAL

P:  Go in peace!  Serve the Lord!
