NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

September 30, 2018

AS WE GATHER………… “And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.”  Do you actually look forward to the Last Day?  There are many things or events to which we look forward with anticipation.  We may even say, “I can’t wait!”  for the day of graduation from high school or college; the wedding day; the first day on a new job.  Yet we don’t say that when anticipating major surgery or the dentist or the loss of a loved one.  Today Jesus has us look forward to a reward laid up for us on that day.  James chimes in, saying whatever our circumstances, the Christian faith enables us to live with the hope and light of our promised deliverance.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING

P:  In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

WE CONFESS

P:  Beloved, the apostle James says, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.”  Let us all therefore lay our sins on Jesus, looking to Him for forgiveness.

C: Almighty God, at Your invitation, we beg for Your grace and forgiveness of our sins for the sake of the priceless sacrifice of our Lord Jesus on the cross.  Forgive us for the wayward and wrongful acts we have committed and also for the good and constructive words and acts we have failed to do.  Help us to live the way You desire us to live.

P:  Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

HYMN OF PRAISE: “Here I Am, Lord”

I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry.

All who dwell in dark and sin….my hand will save.

I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.

Who will bear my light to them?  Whom shall I send?

CHORUS: Here I am, Lord.  Is it I, Lord?

I have heard you calling in the night.

I will go, Lord, if you lead me.

I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain.

I have wept for love of them.  They turn away.

I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my word to them.  Whom shall I send?

CHORUS

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P:  Let us Pray…Everlasting Father, source of every blessing, mercifully direct and govern us by Your Holy Spirit that we may complete the works You have prepared for us to do; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON:                                         Genesis 41:1-16, 25-36

When two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing by the Nile, when out of the river there came up seven cows, sleek and fat, and they grazed among the reeds. After them, seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and stood beside those on the riverbank. And the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.

He fell asleep again and had a second dream: Seven heads of grain, healthy and good, were growing on a single stalk. After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted—thin and scorched by the east wind. The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy, full heads. Then Pharaoh woke up; it had been a dream.

In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.

Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, “Today I am reminded of my shortcomings. 10 Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he imprisoned me and the chief baker in the house of the captain of the guard. 11 Each of us had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own. 12 Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his dream. 13 And things turned out exactly as he interpreted them to us: I was restored to my position, and the other man was impaled.”

14 So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his clothes, he came before Pharaoh.

15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream, and no one can interpret it. But I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream you can interpret it.”

16 “I cannot do it,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”

25 Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one and the same. God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. 26 The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; it is one and the same dream. 27 The seven lean, ugly cows that came up afterward are seven years, and so are the seven worthless heads of grain scorched by the east wind: They are seven years of famine.

28 “It is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what he is about to do. 29 Seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt, 30 but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will ravage the land. 31 The abundance in the land will not be remembered, because the famine that follows it will be so severe. 32 The reason the dream was given to Pharaoh in two forms is that the matter has been firmly decided by God, and God will do it soon.

33 “And now let Pharaoh look for a discerning and wise man and put him in charge of the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance. 35 They should collect all the food of these good years that are coming and store up the grain under the authority of Pharaoh, to be kept in the cities for food. 36 This food should be held in reserve for the country, to be used during the seven years of famine that will come upon Egypt, so that the country may not be ruined by the famine.”

GOSPEL: Temptations to sin                                      Mark 9:38-50

38 John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.”39 But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for no one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40 For the one who is not against us is for us. 41 For truly, I say to you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ will by no means lose his reward.

42 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell, 48 ‘where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.’ 49 For everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

SERMON

SERMON HYMN: “When Peace, like a River”

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way;

When sorrows, like sea billows roll;

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,

It is well, It is well with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate

And hath shed his own blood for my soul.

He lives – oh, the bliss of this glorious thought;

My sin, not in part, but the whole,

Is nailed to his cross, and I bear it no more.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when our faith shall be sight,

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,

The trumpet shall sound, and the Lord shall descend;

Even so it is well with my soul.

APOSTLES’ CREED

C:  I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

             Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

             Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

             Born of the virgin Mary,

             Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

             Was crucified, died and was buried.

             He descended into hell.

             The third day He rose again from the dead.

             He ascended into heaven

             And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

             From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

                     The communion of saints,

             The forgiveness of sins,

Arranged by: Mark Hayes

Bread of the World in mercy broken, Wine of the Soul in mercy shed,

by Whom the words of life were spoken, and in Whose death our sins are dead.

Look on the heart by sorrow broken; Look on the tears by sinners shed;

And be Your feast to us the token that by Your grace our souls are fed!

Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, One in Three;

Christ above me, Christ beneath me, Christ within me, Three in One.

Amen, A—men, A-men.
