Peace Lutheran Church

We welcome you in the name of the Lord Jesus. We are honored with your presence.  If you do not have a church home, you are invited to join us regularly. Please introduce yourself to Pastor Jeremy Lucke or one of the Ushers as you leave today and sign the guest book in the entryway. We continue to observe the guidelines for health safety. If you have any questions, please see an usher.  Everyone is welcome.

The ringing of the bell and the lighting of the Christ candle mark the beginning of our service and a time for quiet meditation, prayer and inward reflection as we begin our worship.

Children are welcome at our worship services. If you prefer, Peace Lutheran has a playroom equipped for children three years old and younger. The room is unstaffed and can be accessed in the fellowship hall where the service is also being live streamed for your convenience and enjoyment.

Holy Communion is celebrated every first and third Sunday and will follow the order of service in the bulletin. If you are a baptized Christian and share our faith in Jesus as Savior and have been instructed in the meaning and use of the Lord’s Supper, you are invited to partake. We have pre-wrapped communion wine or juice and wafers. We also have gluten-free wafers available. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, ask the server. May the body and blood of Jesus, present in the bread and wine, be a blessing to you.

There are times during the service when you will be asked to stand if you are able. Please feel free to remain seated if standing is difficult.

Offering. Peace Lutheran Church understands and teaches that Offerings are voluntary and to be from the heart. Whether we give or do not give does not determine our salvation. Whether we give much or little does not determine our standing before God. Sharing an Offering is an opportunity to quietly practice generosity with our neighbors. Offerings may be placed in the plates by the doors as we exit the sanctuary.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

AS WE GATHER… Hope is a vital component in the Christian life. The apostle Paul put it right in the middle of his trio of lasting values when he wrote, “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three” (1 Corinthians 13:13). Hope is the spark of the future that brightens the present. The beginning of September marks a transitional moment in our lives. Summer is ending and Fall is beginning. Vacations are ending and school is beginning. Today we are reminded hope—a gift from God to help us in whatever transition we are facing!

RINGING OF THE BELL

Silent Prayer: O Lord, my creator, redeemer, and comforter, as I come to worship You in spirit and in truth, I humbly pray that You would open my heart to what You have for me in Your Word so that I may repent of my sins, believe in Jesus, and grow in grace and holiness. Hear me for the sake of Jesus. Amen.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

OPENING BLESSING AND FOCUS    PSALM 1

Leader:  The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with us all.

People:  Amen.

Women:  Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked.

Men:  nor stands in the ways of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers.

Women:  but his delight is in the law of the Lord,

Men:  and on His law he meditates day and night.

Women:  He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.

Men:  In all that he does, he prospers.

Women:  The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Men:  Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

Women:  for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,

Men:  but the way of the wicked will perish.

WE CONFESS

Leader:  Father in heaven, in Your mercy You call us to turn from our sinful ways and live.

~~~~~ A time of silence is observed. ~~~~~
Leader:  We confess.
People:  Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we confess that we have run away from Your presence. By what we do and what we fail to do, we have turned our backs on Your love. Forgive us, Father. Draw us again to the cross of Your Son that we may be restored in our relationship with You.
Leader:  Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are promised redemption and restoration in the presence of our Father, who hears our prayers, and for the sake of His Son, forgives us all of our sins. To those who believe in Jesus He gives the power to become the children of God and give them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
People:  Amen.
OPENING PRAISE SONG   “Shine Jesus Shine”
Graham Kendrick; 1987 Make Way Music (Admin. by Music Services, Inc.)
Lord, the Light of Your love is shining
In the midst of the darkness shining;
Jesus, Light of the World, shine upon us.
Set us free by the truth You now bring us.
Shine on me, shine on me.
.
Chorus: Shine, Jesus, shine,
Fill this land with the Father’s glory;
Blaze, Spirit, blaze, Set our hearts on fire.
Flow, river flow, Flood the nations with grace and mercy.
Send forth Your Word, Lord, and let there be light.
.
Lord, I come to Your awesome presence,
From the shadows into Your radiance;
By the blood I may enter Your brightness,
Search me, try me, consume all my darkness,
Shine on me, shine on me.
Chorus
As we gaze on Your kingly brightness,
So our faces display Your likeness;
Ever changing from glory to glory,
Mirror’d here may our lives tell Your story,
Shine on me, shine on me.
Chorus
PRAYER FOCUS
Leader:  Let us Pray. O merciful Lord, You did not spare Your only Son but delivered Him up for us all, even though we have run away from Your presence. Grant that we, restored into the fellowship of Your family, share with others the forgiveness we receive from your hand; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
People:    Amen.
SCRIPTURE LESSONS
FIRST LESSON      1 JOHN 3:1-10
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.
Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.
Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.
10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
Reader:  This is the Word of the Lord.
People:  Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL LESSON       Luke 14:25-35
25 Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them,
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’
31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. 33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
34 “Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? 35 It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to You O Christ.
SERMON HYMN  “All People That On Earth Do Dwell”
Roger Jones & William Kethe; © Words: Public Domain Music: 1981 Christian Music Ministries (Admin. by Sovereign Music UK)
All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell;
Come ye before Him and rejoice.
.
Know that the Lord is God indeed:
Without our aid He did us make;
We are His folk, He doth us feed,
And for His sheep He doth us take.
.
Oh, enter then His gates with praise,
Approach with joy His courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless His name always,
For it is seemly so to do.
.
For why? The Lord our God is good;
His mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.
.
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
The God whom heav’n and earth adore,
From us and from the angel host
Be praise and glory evermore.
SERMON
“Where There Is Hope, There Is Life”
Part 1
Part 2
APOSTLES’ CREED
People:   I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy Christian Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life + everlasting.  Amen.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Leader:  Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.
Leader:  For the Gospel of Jesus Christ to reach into every corner of our broken world, that all who are running away from our heavenly Father turn from the path that leads to destruction, and by the Holy Spirit turn to Jesus for redemption and restoration, let us pray to the Lord.
People:  Father, strengthen us to turn to You in repentance and faith.
Leader:  For all those within the Church of Jesus, both pastors and laity, that we join as one to share the restoring word of Jesus with those we are sent to serve, embodying the spirit of Paul’s words to Philemon, let us pray to the Lord.
People:  Father, grant that we know all the good things that come to us as we share Your word.
Leader:  For all those who seek restoration with others, that the message of forgiveness of sins, life and salvation not only be received in humble faith, but also shared within the relationships we have, knowing that every one of us is dependent upon Christ’s mercy and love, let us pray to the Lord.
People:  Father, help us to extend to others the mercy we receive from You.
Leader:  For all who are broken in heart, body, mind, and relationship, including those who are homebound, hospitalized, in care centers, awaiting surgery, and recovering from medical procedures, (especially…………), that the Lord would refresh the hearts of His saints and work mightily for their good, let us pray to the Lord.
People:  Father, grant healing and refreshments to all for whom we pray.
Leader:  Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy.  We pray these things through Your Son, Jesus, our Lord.
People:  Amen.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
Leader:  I Corinthians 11:23-25 says, “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen
Distribution Song     “Freely, Freely”
Words & Music by: Carol Owens, adapted from: Matt. 10:7,8; © 1971 by William J. Gaither.  The Fellowship Publication
God forgave my sin in Jesus’ name,
I’ve been born again in Jesus’ name;
And in Jesus’ name I come to you
To share His love as He told me to.
He said, “Freely, freely you have received:
Freely, freely give.
Go in my name, and because you believe,
Others will know that I live.”
.
All pow’r is giv’n in Jesus’ name,
In earth and heav’n in Jesus’ name
And in Jesus’ name I come to you
To share His pow’r as He told me to.
He said, “Freely, freely you have received:
Freely, freely give.
Go in my name, and because you believe,
Others will know that I live.”
